Jack Piermatti, DMD: Changing lives using dental artistry

There are few things that can boost one’s confidence more than having a great smile. It can truly change one’s life. For more than 30 years, Jack Piermatti, DMD has been devoted to just that: saving smiles.

From the time he began his career in dentistry, Piermatti knew he wanted to make an impact in the lives of his patients. It was this passion that led to a specialization in prosthodontics, a discipline defined as implant, esthetic and reconstructive dentistry by the American Dental Association. Piermatti furthered his studies in implantology and maintains a commitment to continuing education.

Through the years, Piermatti has treated men, women and children of all ages. Cases have ranged from routine to extremely complex. “People who have felt embarrassed by their tooth problems or smile are astonished by what new permanent teeth can do for self-esteem,” Piermatti says.

Specialists do make a difference
Patients in need of reconstructive dentistry should seek out a specialist just as they might if suffering from a heart, skin or neurological condition. When the treatment involves dental implants, statistics and well-documented cases show that success rates exceed 95 percent if performed by an expert in the field.

Several factors are taken into consideration when evaluating tooth replacement with dental implants and the options used in reconstructive dentistry, such as bridges, crowns and dentures. These include the number of teeth being restored and implants required to support your replacement teeth. For treatment planning, a specialist may determine bone grafting and other procedures are required to ensure the best possible result.

But, it is not only about aesthetics. The need for dental reconstruction often arises from a damaged dentition or poor functionality. Without proper care, these cases may lead to periodontal disease, which studies have tied to heart disease, stroke and other medical conditions. Difficulty in chewing food can also result in future gastroenterology issues.

When it comes to treatment, health is more of a determining factor than age. Those who are healthy enough to have a tooth extracted are generally able to receive dental implants. Since certain chronic diseases may contraindicate implant treatment, a specialist, like Piermatti, is best suited to carefully evaluate a patient’s dental and health history, and then offer a proper recommendation.

The good news for patients: There is no age restriction for having dental implants or other reconstructive dental treatment. Implants and related elements are stable, comfortable and look, feel and function like natural teeth. This means patients are able to eat and drink whatever they like without limitations.

“When I initially consult with a patient, the first question is a matter of fear that treatment will be painful. In truth, there is very little discomfort,” says Piermatti. “Others often feel their case may be far too difficult, yet it really is something we have treated before. My recommendation: Let us determine what if any treatment is best for you.”

All-in-one dental artistry and care
Today, schedules are busier than ever. Recognizing this trend more than 25 years ago, Piermatti founded Dental Arts of South Jersey, a comprehensive, multi-doctor dental health care facility conveniently located in the Cherry Hill/Voorhees area. The goal was to provide one office where patients are able to receive the highest quality and specialized dental treatment completed in one office.

These days, Piermatti is known as an expert in his field, appearing on television, publishing his work in dental publications, and educating other professionals out of UMDNJ, where he is the director of the Dental Implant maxicourse. He also serves on the American Board of Oral Implantology and is a board examiner for doctors who want to become board certified in Oral Implantology.

As managing partner, Piermatti continues his specialization in restorative implant dentistry and has performed more than 15,000 implant procedures. He also maintains his dedication to patient care, adding, “Although we are a large office, we pride ourselves on professionalism and personal attention shown to patients. We strive to deliver quality dental care in a comfortable and caring environment.”

At Dental Arts of South Jersey, the expert team provides comprehensive reconstructive dentistry with a focus on quality and efficiency. They have carefully selected laboratory technicians and use the finest materials for restorations. Together, the result is outstanding, ensuring optimal cosmetics along with exceptional strength and durability.

The facility also boasts the latest technology for both diagnosis and fabrication. Using a CAT scan, Piermatti is able to get a complete picture of a patient’s underlying bone and tissue. This detailed, three-dimensional cross section is beneficial when evaluating the need for dental implants and provides necessary information for efficient treatment planning. The office also uses CAD CAM technology for fabrication.

“There is no question that the advancements in technology have greatly enhanced the level of accuracy when it comes to reconstructive dentistry,” Piermatti affirms. “At the same time, nothing can or should ever replace the personal touch and hands-on placement and refinement necessary to ensure the optimal result. This is what ultimately changes people’s lives.”
