BISHOP EUSTACE CRUSADERS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Virtually the entire team returns this season. Senior midfielder-defender Ben Keane was a third-team all-South Jersey selection by the South Jersey Coaches Association. Other key returning seniors are defender T.J. Maiorino and forward Matt D’Antonio. The strength is in the junior class, with veteran forwards Austin Lenalt and Marc Montinard, defenders Nick Hanuscin, Matthew Lenihan and Ernie DeVenchenzo, and midfielders Troy McCartney, Alec Palmieri and Pat Biche. Junior goalie Vincent Maiorino takes over for Tyler Miller, the all-South Jersey keeper now at Northwestern.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Timber Creek is the defending Olympic National Division champ and the Chargers remain the favorite. Seneca is another team to watch, but Eustace should be a serious contender.
OUTLOOK: The Crusaders went 8-8-2 last year and now should be among the most improved teams in South Jersey. Besides being a major contender in the National Division, this has the look of a top-10 South Jersey team.
CAMDEN CATHOLIC FIGHTING IRISH
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior keeper Matt McElhatton, a three-sport performer, is joined by classmates Conner Britton and Justin Pierlott along with junior Nick Minkiewicz as returning veterans for the Irish. Among returning letter winners are senior John Zazzera, junior Brian Koehler and sophomores Ryan Irving and Bradley Maine.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Defending champion Timber Creek along with Bishop Eustace are the teams to beat in the Olympic Conference National Division.
OUTLOOK: The Irish were 0-14-3 last season, so a realistic goal would be to win a few games and have young players develop for the future.
CHEROKEE CHIEFS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: : Senior forward Mike Ryan was a Philadelphia Inquirer first-team all-South Jersey selection, after totaling 24 goals and seven assists for the Group 4 state champs. Senior midfielder Angelo Dambalas snagged six goals and six assists, making him an asset for this upcoming season. Goalie Barry Fitzgerald was a second-team all-conference choice after recording 10 shutouts. Classmate Jason Spieker was also a second-team all-conference choice, after recording three goals and nine assists. Senior defender Chris Crowley and senior midfielder Jimmy Bottini are among five returning letter winners.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Coach Anthony Gallo’s Chiefs are the favorite in the Olympic Conference American Division and will be difficult to unseat as South Jersey Group 4 champion. Eastern and Lenape are both teams to watch.
OUTLOOK: The schedule is so difficult that matching last year’s 17-5-2 record may be easier said than done. The key is replacing all-South Jersey forward Dave Schlatter, a clutch scorer who was part of a dynamic scoring duo along with Ryan. With opponents no doubt focusing on Ryan, finding a complementary scorer will help determine Cherokee’s success.
CHERRY HILL EAST COUGARS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior Ben Wirtshafter started playing toward the end of the season and will be the main keeper this year. Defender Joe Pellegrino played the last five games after transferring from Paul VI. Other returning senior starters include defender Joe LaGrossa, and midfielders Gary Lindgren and Eric Choe. Returning junior starters include defender Adam Cohler, midfielders Andrew Adler and Ethan Messinger, and forward Zach Steinbock. Senior Tyler Berlinski is a key returning letter winner. Among newcomers to watch are junior defender Matt Muench, senior midfielder Eric Bonventure and junior midfielder Garrett McVeigh.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Defending state champion Cherokee and defending Olympic Conference American Division champion Eastern are among the best teams in the South Jersey Group 4 division.
OUTLOOK: After a 1-13-1 season, the Cougars look to improve. This should be a solid team defensively and, as with many clubs, the key will be consistent scoring.
CHERRY HILL WEST LIONS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior midfielder-defender Ramadan Bayyan, senior keeper Andrew Ricketti and senior defender Chris Altieri were first-team all-Olympic Conference Patriot Division selections. Junior forward-midfielder Dan Walsh is another key returning starter. Among several returning letter winners are senior defenders Ryan McBride, Dan Stetser and Zach Bond; senior keeper Ryan Bradley; senior forwards Matt Stacker and Kevin Viola; junior midfielders Ray Horner, Conor McFadden and James Meadows; and junior goalie Sean Mullarkey.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Defending Olympic Patriot champion Shawnee remains the team to beat, but West shouldn’t be overlooked.
OUTLOOK: The Lions were 12-4-4 and should be a threat for a sectional championship. West will be very strong in the back; the key will be the Lions’ ability to put the ball in the net.
EASTERN VIKINGS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: There are just two starters back from last year’s Olympic Conference American Division champion team: senior defender-midfielder Zev Fayer and senior sweeper Kyle Bennett. Five others who saw limited time should play a much greater role this year; they are senior forwards Brady Akman, Michael Grossman and Ray Kaldany, and senior midfielders Nema Buruschkin and Harry Torok. Several reinforcements from a 10-0-2 junior varsity team should contribute, including junior goalie Cory Brodkin, junior forward Scott Gillman and sophomore midfielder Carlos Valle.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Cherokee is the clear favorite in the division and South Jersey Group 4.
OUTLOOK: On paper, it seems the Vikings would be set to take a big step back this season. But this program has won two division titles in the last three years under coach Steve Kosyla. While it may be difficult to match last year’s 15-4-2 record, this is still a unit capable of being a top team.
GLOUCESTER CATHOLIC RAMS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: The Rams are the defending Tri-County Diamond champions with three first-team all-conference performers, now seniors: midfielder Tim Scaffidi, forward Pat Kane and defender Bob McLeer. Senior midfielder-forward Jake Turner was a second-team selection. Other starters are senior midfielder Sean Reed, senior defender Jarret Ligamari, junior midfielders Mike Hartigan and Matt Gaudreau, and junior forward Mike Langston. Returning letter winners include senior forward Joe Aiello, senior defender Matt Buonanno and junior midfielder Chris Ferrari.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Nobody in the Tri-County Diamond Division. The Rams will likely hold fast and steady to their title.
OUTLOOK: In addition to being the division favorite, the Rams have the talent and experience to make a run in the state tournament. Coach Steve Bombaro’s team could exceed last year’s 15-3 record.
HADDONFIELD BULLDOGS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior Luis Pera earned first-team all-Colonial Conference Liberty Division honors last season. Forward P.K. Schlitt had 10 goals and seven assists, while Rob Schlitt is a solid midfielder. Vince Delduca will be among the Colonial’s top goalkeepers, and Mike Harter is a solid sweeper.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: It appears as if the Bulldogs could be the slight favorite in the Colonial Conference Liberty Division, although defending champion Haddon Heights and West Deptford remain serious contenders.
OUTLOOK: Haddon Heights is the defending champ and West Deptford won the division two years ago. Now it could be Haddonfield’s turn to regain control. Under coach Joe Falana the Bulldogs are always among the best defensive teams, and this year should be no different. Improving last year’s record (14-6-1) is an attainable goal, as is contending in the division and South Jersey Group 2.
LENAPE INDIANS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Three second-team all-conference picks return this year: seniors midfielder Bobby Briggs, defender-forward Ryan Zoltowski and midfielder-defender Andrew Donnelly. The fourth returning starter is junior defender Colin Keyes. Coach Chris Foley also welcomes back four letter winners: junior forward Bryce Kelly and three seniors, Greg Salamon, Wes Johnson and Andrew Stockhecker.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Cherokee is the favorite, while Washington Township and defending division champion. But Eastern will again provide plenty of resistance.
OUTLOOK: The Indians were 5-8-6 last year and can’t be overlooked in the Olympic American or Group 4.
MOORESTOWN QUAKERS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior midfielder Jacob Dowiak and senior forward Alec Nicolai were second-team all-Burlington County Liberty Division choices. Other returning starters are senior goalie Nick Savino and junior midfielder Gerald Lamina. Key letter winners include senior forwards Matt Gavin and Bode Adunbarin, sophomore defender Trevor Hall, senior midfielder Nick Russo and senior defender Austin Harker.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: In the last few years, the Burlington County Liberty has been the best division in boys’ soccer. Defending champ Delran, Rancocas Valley and Cinnaminson will all have formidable clubs.
OUTLOOK: Moorestown went 11-8-2 last year and came on strong at the end of the season. With so many new starters in the mix, a similar pattern could emerge.
MOORESTOWN FRIENDS FOXES
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Just three starters return from an 8-8-1 team. They are senior forward Bryan Gfeller, who had two goals and two assists last season, senior midfielder/defender Danny Salowe and junior defender C.J. Cooper. Four returning letter winners, who could each play midfield or forward, include senior Trevor Heins, juniors Ethan Carilli and Tim Latimer, and sophomore Dan Richards.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Defending Friends League champion Westtown, along with Shipley, will be major competitors.
OUTLOOK: The Foxes, who fell to Shipley in the league semifinals, graduated 15 seniors, so it would be an accomplishment to match last year’s record. Coach Mike Schlotterbeck has kept this program at a competitive level, and the team shouldn’t be undersold. If the Foxes could qualify for the Friends League playoffs, it would be a highly successful season.
PAUL VI EAGLES
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior forwards Sean Owens and Cedric Lewis and senior midfielders Ryan Mitzel, Adam Burt and Nick Villari, are the key returning veterans. Junior sweeper Nick Gallo will help anchor the defense.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: The Olympic National is loaded, with defending champ Timber Creek, along with Bishop Eustace and Seneca, providing tough competition.
OUTLOOK : The Eagles won four games last year and they hope to improve this season, but a key will be finding a keeper. There are some awfully talented teams in the division, and how the Eagles do in the back line and the net will determine whether they can increase their win total.
SENECA GOLDEN EAGLES
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior defender Eric Bihlear was a first-team all-South Jersey selection. Other returning starters are senior outside defenders Connor Gimbel and Dan Land, junior midfielders Alex McGrainer and Tom Coyne, and senior midfielders Kent Dimmig, Dan Eiding and Cody Chladek. Junior keeper Ryan Oyola is among the key newcomers.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Defending division champion Timber Creek.
OUTLOOK: The Golden Eagles are one of South Jersey’s strongest defensive teams. To improve upon last year’s 10-8-1 record, they’ll need consistent scoring.
SHAWNEE RENEGADES
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior forward Greg Biggiani and senior keeper Mike Hartmann were named first-team all-South Jersey selections by the South Jersey Soccer Coaches’ Association. Seniors Tyler Arsenault and Robert Vogel are returning starting defenders. Two sophomores, defender Tyler Skwara and forward Ryan Talbot, saw extensive playing time last season.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Shawnee is the defending division champion and remains the favorite, but Cherry Hill West is expected to be a serious contender.
OUTLOOK: Shawnee advanced to the South Jersey Group 4 final before losing in a penalty kick shootout to Cherokee. Once again, the components are there to challenge for a sectional title.
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP MINUTEMEN
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior defender Kevin McCollick was a first-team all-conference choice, and junior forward Drew Balkenhol was a second-team choice. Other returning starters are junior midfielders Eric Jordan and Matt McCleod, junior defender John Abalah and senior defender Tyler Flockton.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Cherokee, Eastern and Lenape.
OUTLOOK: Last year, coach Shane Snyder successfully transitioned from the girls’ team to the boys’ program, producing a 14-6-1 season. The Minutemen should again be competitive in the American Division and Group 4.
