BISHOP EUSTACE CRUSADERS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior central defender Emily Hansinger leads an experienced unit after earning first-team all-conference honors last year. Senior midfielder Erin Logue and junior midfielder Taylor Baranowsky were second-team choices. Among the other key veterans are senior midfielders Dina Bernetich and Morgan Wright, junior forward Ashley Gault, junior forward-midfielder Nicolette Wilkins and center-midfielder/defender Giana Postiglione.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Defending champ Paul VI is the team to beat. Timber Creek is also a formidable opponent.
OUTLOOK: New coach Lindsey Finnegan, a former South Jersey player of the year from Gloucester Catholic, should help improve on last year’s 9-11-1 record.
CAMDEN CATHOLIC FIGHTING IRISH
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Junior defender Tracey Cadogan was a second-team all-conference defender on what should be a young Irish team. A player for the South Jersey Barons, Cadogan could be among the more underrated players in South Jersey. Among the other starters are junior defender-forward Shannon McCormick, senior forward Kelsey Kilpatrick, senior forward-midfielder Claire Higgins, senior forward Gianna DeMarco and sophomore defender Cara Racobaldo.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Defending Olympic National champion Paul VI remains the team to beat.
OUTLOOK: The Irish won two games last year and are in a rebuilding situation, but improvement is likely.
CHEROKEE CHIEFS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior Rachel Jackson scored a team-high eight goals from center midfield. Other returning starters include senior midfielder Kasey Maguire, senior defender-midfielder Kim Nale, junior midfielder-defender Devon Cumming, junior defenders Kristen Sullivan and Allie Mitchell and sophomore midfielder Sarah Jackson.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Lenape is a solid favorite in the Olympic Conference American Division and South Jersey Group 4, while Eastern is not far behind.
OUTLOOK: The Chiefs will be competitive, but the division is so strong that finishing at .500 would be an accomplishment.
CHERRY HILL EAST COUGARS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Returning starters include senior midfielders Alexa DiPiero, and Christine Goins, senior defender Natalie DeLuca, junior striker Erica Hansen and junior midfielder Caitlin Delaney. Among letter winners are four seniors: defender Alex Hartey, strikers Catherine Hartman and Paige Kucykowski, and midfielder Brittany D’Amelio.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: The Cougars compete in the one of the toughest divisions in the state, the Olympic American, where four-time Group 4 state champion Lenape remains the team to beat.
OUTLOOK: First-year coach Katie Boyle will bring enthusiasm to the program. Matching last year’s eight wins would be an accomplishment.
CHERRY HILL WEST LIONS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Junior forward Lauren Anderson, who scored 15 goals last fall, leads the returning veterans. That depth includes senior goalkeeper Jess Tadley, junior midfielder Meghan Dumser, junior forward Lauren Anderson, senior midfielder Hannah Franke, sophomore defender Erin McBride and senior defender Victoria Heifet.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Defending Olympic National champ Paul VI is the team to beat.
OUTLOOK: The Lions went 15-7 in coach Marie O’Neil’s first season. With an experienced group, there is no reason why they can’t match or exceed that win total.
EASTERN VIKINGS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: It all starts with junior Madison Tiernan, a member of the U.S. National Team pool and a consensus all-South Jersey choice. Senior defenders Nicole Genovese and Rachel Schade and junior defender Danielle Genay were second-team all-conference picks. Senior midfielder Serena Hitchins had two goals and two assists. Other returning starters are junior defender Lauren Minghenelli, junior midfielder Sarah Kane, sophomore forward Maxine Turchin and junior goalie Jax Buckley.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Lenape.
OUTLOOK: Once again, the Vikings will be a serious contender for the Olympic American and South Jersey Group 4 titles, but Lenape, four-time defending champ in both, will be difficult to unseat.
GLOUCESTER CATHOLIC RAMS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior midfielder Devin Dougherty and junior midfielder Madison Hogan were first-team all-conference choices. Senior forward Kelly Kane was a second-team choice after scoring 13 goals. Junior midfielder-defender Katie O’Shea was also a second-team selection. Other veterans include senior midfielder Gabrielle Cuccinotta and sophomore midfielder Marie Petrongolo. Sophomore forward Lauren Wilson is a returning letter winner.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: The Rams were 16-3 overall and 10-0 in winning the Tri-County Diamond Division and remain the team to beat in the division. Glassboro and Woodstown are teams to watch in the division.
OUTLOOK: Under coach Kate Ormsby, the Rams are a perennial Top 10 program in South Jersey and should earn this status again in 2011. Replacing 23-goal scorer Korrie Harkins will be a priority—and if that happens, the Rams will be not only the team to beat in the Diamond, but a sectional title contender as well.
HADDONFIELD BULLDOGS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior midfielder Katie Johnston was named all-South Jersey. Three other players—senior stopper Maddie Kiep, junior sweeper Olivia Blaber and junior forward Emily Carson—joined Johnston on the Colonial Liberty first-team all-conference squad. Other returning starters are senior forward Laurel Falana, sophomore midfielder Kylie Kirk and junior defender Gretchen Kiep. Senior Kellie Riley, who missed most of last season with a broken collarbone, could be among the top keepers in the area.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Defending champion West Deptford will again be Haddonfield’s major competition. Last season, West Deptford won the division with a 15-0-1 mark, while Haddonfield was 14-1-1.
OUTLOOK: Haddonfield has won three state titles in seven years under coach Glenn Gess, and the veteran Bulldogs team could make another run this year. Haddonfield will be the favorite in the Colonial Liberty Division.
LENAPE INDIANS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior Allison Johnson, a keeper, is a star player, while sophomore Kate Walters was a consensus first-team all-South Jersey choice after totaling 21 goals and 11 assists last season. Senior Courtney Kovac was named the Midfielder of the Year by the South Jersey Coaches Association after recording 12 goals and eight assists. Other returning starters include senior forward Emmy Duffey, senior defenders Lizzie Duffey and Morgan McDivitt, and junior Tori Prager, who is among the top midfielders in South Jersey. Senior Katie Rigby, a consensus all-South Jersey choice as a sophomore, returns after missing last season with a knee injury.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Lenape is the team to beat in the Olympic Conference American Division, as well as South Jersey Group 4 and state Group 4. However, Eastern will provide plenty of completion.
OUTLOOK: The Indians have won four straight state Group 4 titles and have the ability to keep that streak intact.
MOORESTOWN QUAKERS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: The Quakers have two returning first-team all-division choices: senior defender Allie Smith and senior midfielder Stephanie Toy. Other starters from last season include senior goalie Rebecca Schultz, senior defender Haileigh Dalmass, junior defender Alyssa Lukridge; senior midfielder Lindsay Goldblatt, sophomore midfielder Frankie Angelieri, junior forward-defender Nicole Varela and junior forward Megan Kelly.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Moorestown’s string of 13 division championships was snapped last year by Cinnaminson. Though Cinnaminson remains the favorite, Moorestown is a serious contender.
OUTLOOK: The Quakers were 5-9-2 last season, a misleading record since seven of the losses were by 1-0 scores. Coach Bill Mulvihill, with 204 career wins, has built an elite program. Led by Smith, Moorestown will have one of the top defenses in South Jersey, but the key will be whether the Quakers can generate consistent offense. If so, the Quakers will not only be a conference contender, but a team to watch during the South Jersey playoffs.
MOORESTOWN FRIENDS FOXES
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior forward Brianna Howarth has been a first-team all-Friends League player the past two years and has scored 23 career goals. Other key veterans include senior defender Sophia DePaulis, senior forward Toni Politt, junior defender Kaitlyn Koste, junior midfielder Lauren Lowe, and sophomore midfielders Vicki Geyer and Noelle Smith. Among the returning letter winners are senior midfielders Avery Bofinger and Danielle Magaziner and sophomore keeper Evelyn Feigeles.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Defending Friends League champion Shipley won’t relinquish the title easily. Last year’s league runner-up, the George School, is another formidable team.
OUTLOOK: Moorestown Friends has improved its record each of the last four years, and that trend should continue. Howarth is a proven finisher, and there are several other strong players back from an 8-7-3 team that should enable Moorestown Friends to post another winning record.
PAUL VI EAGLES
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior Loren Reilley was a consensus all-South Jersey defender. Senior Erica Graziosi was second on the team with nine goals. Classmate Brittany Ratcliffe was a consensus all-South Jersey forward as a sophomore and missed last year due to a knee injury. Other veterans include seniors Allison Bigos, Brittany Carammana, Kaitlyn Morreale, Devon Reeves and Jocelyn Rhea, and juniors Kristen Bate, Sarah Harris, Erica McDonough and Arienne Reilley. Newcomers to watch include juniors Catherine Fiore, Stephanie Heresniak and Erica Perrone and sophomores Jaclyn Carty, Kristen McShane, Kristen Morawski, Gabrielle Rainey and Kelsey Vick.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Nobody in the division. The Eagles are two-time Olympic Conference National Division champions, and are favored to win once again this year.
OUTLOOK : Paul VI was 16-3-2 last season and could be even better this year. Not only will Paul VI will begin as one of the top five teams, but it could also pose a threat in the South Jersey Non-Public A race after finishing as runner-up last year.
SENECA GOLDEN EAGLES
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior forward Shelby Lyon was an all-conference performer. Other returning starters are senior midfielders Emily Autwarter and Johanna Metzger, and junior midfielder Molly Garthwaite. The Golden Eagles have two juniors who split JV action last year, Kelsey O’Brien and Taylor Donia
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Defending division champ Paul VI remains the team to beat.
OUTLOOK: The Golden Eagles graduated 14 seniors from a 4-11-1 squad. This will be a younger team, but one capable of showing improvement from last year, especially with a forward as accomplished as Lyon leading the way.
SHAWNEE RENEGADES
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior midfielder Kristen Niedrach and senior defender Ciarra Stroud were first-team all-conference selections. Junior midfielder Erin Smith was a second-team selection. Other returning starters include junior forward Shannon Nugent and senior defender Kelly Schuitema. Senior Glade Nugent, the backup keeper last season, will be in goal for the Renegades.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Shawnee plays in the state’s toughest division, where Lenape is the four-time defender.
OUTLOOK: The Renegades are always competitive but few remember that they were the only team to beat Lenape last year. Once again, Shawnee could be a Top 10 team, but they must find scoring talent to replace consensus all-South Jersey choice Shannon Dennehey, now at the University of Louisville.
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP MINUTEMAIDS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior midfielder/ defender Alyssa Kalit and junior forward Allegra Ondrejka were first-team all-conference selections last season, while senior defender Claire Midili was a second-team choice. Other players who saw starting time are senior keeper Kylie Gorman, senior midfielder Brittany Bollendorf and four juniors: Kylie Calandra, Katie Buoni, Tamara Shoyer and Emily Haggerty. More letter winners include senior Ally Jordan and juniors Jenna Ierly, Zhane Joseph and keeper Sara Armor.
BIGGEST COMPETITION: Lenape is the most likely the No. 1 team in South Jersey.
OUTLOOK: The Minutemaids are a strong team, but face an extremely difficult schedule.
