Eastern Regional High School sophomores Katie Schmus (bottom left) and Randi Stecki (bottom right) led fellow students of all ages in a Dance For AIDS, a Saturday dance workshop to raise awareness and money for HIV- and AIDS-related causes. The girls raised $1,127 for the nonprofit organizations Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and Dancers Responding to AIDS.

Judy Foreman
Cherokee High School senior Judy Foreman was honored as Student of the Month for her inspiring volunteer work with the Ronald McDonald House. She organized a group of students to design cards and make gingerbread houses for families with children suffering from an injury or illness.

Matt Davis
Washington Township
Fourth-grade Bells Elementary School student Matt Davis won the school’s annual Geography Bee. Davis bested a fifth-grader in the final round by naming 19 of the 22 U.S. states that lie west of the Mississippi River.

Eva Gelernt and Darshak Thosani
Morestown Friends School junior Eva Gelernt and senior Darshak Thosani are regional finalists of the College Board Young Epidemiologist Scholarship Competition. The two finalists each won a $2,000 college scholarship. Moorestown Friends was one of just three schools in the nation to have more than one student deemed a finalist.

Bells Elementary School third-grade student Nathan D’Alfonso was named Accelerated Reader of the Month. He was nominated by his teacher, Jennifer Knorr, for his outstanding progress

Cherry Hill
Five Beck Middle School students were chosen for the All-South Jersey Junior High Band. Adam Abrams, Eric Kim, Olivia Marcelli, Elizabeth Qian and Kevin Wang all play the clarinet for Cherry Hill’s Beck Middle School.

Michael B. O’Brien
Cinnaminson Middle School sixth-grade student Michael B. O’Brien won the top prize for Burlington County’s Veterans of Foreign Wars essay contest. In answering the question, “Does Patriotism Still Matter?” O’Brien’s reflected on his own family’s leadership in the military and the importance of sacrifice for freedom.

Hanna Monteleone and Jenna Zappetti
Haddonfield Middle School students Hanna Monteleone and Jenna Zappetti were honored by the Foreign Language Educators of New Jersey for excellence in learning a foreign language. The sixth-grade students participated in a video podcast contest, demonstrating their knowledge of Spanish during a video tour of the school.

Mount Laurel
Harrington Middle School students Minna Kim and Audrey Liu were recent accepted into the All State Orchestra. Students must first be accepted into their regional orchestra, and then the best are chosen for All State. Seventh-grader Kim plays the viola and eighth-grader Liu plays the violin.

Anna Goula

Mount Laurel resident and Moorestown Friends fifth-grade student Anna Goula received an honorable mention for her contribution to the 2011 Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey’s Species on the Edge Art and Essay Contest. Chosen from 2,000 other essays and art pieces, Goula’s essay and art focused on the endangered blue-spotted salamander. Her essay and artwork can be found at

Vinay Panayanchery
Second-grade South Valley Elementary School student Vinay Panayanchery earned a gold medal in the North South Foundation’s Math Bee, a written test for Indian-American children focusing on the essential concepts of mathematics. Next, Vinay will travel San Jose, Calif., in September, where he will compete nationally.
