Decisions, Decisions
Editor's Corner

by Liz Hunter

As a parent, I often have to make decisions for my daughter. She’s only 3 after all, and while I’ll gladly let her decide which color barrettes to wear or books to read before bed, I have to step in when it’s time to get dressed for school (yes, you have to wear a shirt) or sit down for dinner (no, you can’t just have ketchup). But as she gets older, I hope my husband and I can be her partners in life’s larger decisions, like choosing a major in college.

We’ll explore that topic in this month’s issue with some advice from professionals in education. Just how important is it for a student to decide on a major before their first year and what if it changes? It’s a delicate balance for parents who might not want to influence their soon-to-be-adult but also want to put them on the path for career success.

Parents may also be an influence on their children when it comes to choosing a high school, and in our region, there is a long history of legacies in private schools. These schools have a certain spirit that brings back generations of families and we spoke to them to find out why.

If you need something to take your mind off these heavy decisions, we’ve got just the thing. In The Dish we’re celebrating Oktoberfest with South Jersey’s best German food and drinks. Judging from this list, you won’t need to sleep on your decision to enjoy.
