For kids, there is nothing better than summer. Days are long and bedtimes are a little later. What we adults wouldn’t give to have those days back! Now as parents, we realize the challenges of keeping kids active and engaged during the summer so when September comes—blink and it’s here—their bodies and minds don’t go into shock. This is especially true for the student athletes in the family. While summer may be an excuse for downtime, those who want to compete at the highest level see summer as a chance to gain an edge above their competition. We spoke with local fitness experts about why high school and college athletes should stay off the couch and keep moving even in the off-season. Also in this issue, we highlight how the South Jersey community is rallying around those with special needs to provide quality education, therapy and recreational activities. Through their efforts, people with special needs are feeling more included and nurtured than ever before. And if you’re at a loss on what to do with the kids on any given day this July, don’t miss our Datebook on page 38 for some ideas.
