Girls Tennis

Bishop Eustace Crusaders
The Crusaders will have a new No. 1 singles player for the first time in four years after the graduation of Ania Krawiec, who went 28-3 and made the all-South Jersey second team as a senior. Senior Valerie Huertas played third singles in 2012 and was an Olympic Conference National Division second-team all-star. Senior Chelsea Stratton and junior Julia Rosen were first doubles partners and made the all-conference first team, while Julianna Bidic and Caitlyn Sorelle played second doubles together as freshmen and were all-conference second team. Senior Krysta Lipinski and juniors Amanda Del Rossi and Haley Robinson also saw doubles action last year.

The Crusaders went 16-6, won their division for the 15th time in 17 years, and reached the South Jersey Non-Public A semifinals last year. While they will surely miss Krawiec, enough talent remains to make another bid for an Olympic National championship.

Cherokee Chiefs
The Chiefs graduated first singles player Lauren Tracy, who went 29-4, won the Olympic Conference American Division singles crown, finished second in the Burlington County Tournament and was all-South Jersey. Likely stepping into her role is another outstanding player in junior Amelia Ying, who was all-county for the second straight year, went 34-4 and reached the round of 32 in the state singles tournament. Sophomore Emily Trudo is another promising singles player for Cherokee who was named to the all-county second team in 2012. Catherine Nguyen, who was all-county second team in doubles, is the other returning starter. Senior Kaitlin Applegate and sophomore Rachel Young are also expected to be starters this year.

Last season was a historic one for the Chiefs, who went 21-3 for the best record in program history and won their first-ever South Jersey Group IV championship before falling in the state semifinals. While Tracy is a huge loss, Ying is more than ready to take on the top spot and the rest of the lineup should fill in nicely behind her as Cherokee looks to stay among South Jersey’s top teams.

Cherry Hill East Cougars
Junior Allison Wolf returns after playing first singles as a sophomore and making the Olympic Conference American Division second team. Senior Tyler Haaz was an all-South Jersey third-team doubles player, while sophomore Lauren Romisher and junior Adel Boyarsky played second doubles together and were all-conference second team. Coach Mary Jewett is also excited about several players who will compete for starting positions during the preseason.

The Cougars went 14-2 and came within a point of defending their South Jersey Group IV championship from 2011 as they lost to conference rival Cherokee, 3-2, in last year’s final. They have the potential to get back to the final if some of the newcomers can support the solid core of returners.

Cherry Hill West Lions
The Lions only return one singles player from a year ago, but that one player is senior Michelle Nguyen, who has been in the No. 1 spot the last two seasons and figures to fill that role again. Junior Elisa Truell and senior Gabrielle Eberhardt return to the squad after competing together at first doubles in 2012. Senior Lauren Buckwalter, who played second doubles, is also back.

Coming off a 2-15 season, Cherry Hill West could be in store for great strides this season. Head coach Kristin Bradford believes the addition of an assistant coach to her staff will be important as the Lions look to become more competitive in a strong conference.

Clearview Pioneers
The Pioneers were hit hard by graduation, as five members of their starting lineup have moved on. The only two returning starters are sophomore Julia Novick and senior Joanna Kelner, who had a strong season playing first doubles together. They posted a 20-7 record while winning two rounds at the South Jersey Interscholastic Tournament.

Clearview will clearly need some younger players to step up, and the competition for the five open starting positions is wide open. Still, coach Karl Neiswender expects the Pioneers to contend for the Tri-County Conference Royal Division championship after winning the title last year. They finished 18-2 and reached the South Jersey Group IV quarterfinals.

Eastern Vikings
Eastern’s entire starting singles lineup is back, led by senior Lauren Altschuler, who has played first singles since her freshman year and was an Olympic Conference American Division first-team all-star in 2012. Senior Olivia Cohen played second singles a year ago and was all-conference second team, while senior Nikita Daga played third singles. Another returning starter is senior Jane Bleicher, who played second doubles.

The Vikings went 7-8 and lost in the South Jersey Group IV quarterfinals to eventual champ Cherokee in 2012. With an impressive singles lineup returning, they should be able to make big strides this season.

Gloucester Catholic Rams
The Rams have four starters back from last season but must find a replacement for first singles player Jenna Fratterelli, a Tri-County Conference Diamond Division honorable mention selection. Two candidates for the No. 1 spot are senior Gina Clifford, who played second singles in 2012, and sophomore Morgan Labree, who gained valuable experience as a freshman at third singles. Also returning to the starting lineup are seniors Sam Bocani and Christina Zirbser, who played second doubles together.

The Rams struggled through a 2-14 rebuilding season in 2012. Coach Tony Sidoti is hoping to add numbers to the program and lay the foundation for a winning team this year.

Haddonfield Bulldawgs
Despite losing Taylor Ng, one of the best players in South Jersey history who is now at Dartmouth, the cupboard is far from bare for Haddonfield, which is always an elite team in the area. Senior captains Amanda Lanciano, Victoria Martinez and Erica Pascocello are back to ensure the Bulldawgs continue their tradition of excellence. Lanciano was 40-2 last year at second singles and brings an 89-9 career record into the season, while Martinez was 34-1 at third singles and is 111-3 at Haddonfield. Pascocello and junior Arpie Senopoulos went 37-2 at first doubles in 2012 and became the second team in program history to win a state doubles championship. Sophomore Chelsea Brown is the fifth returning starter, as she teamed with graduated senior Sylvia Strauss at second doubles. All five returners were named to the all-South Jersey first team by the South Jersey Tennis Coaches Association. Other players who could compete for starting positions include seniors Kade Burns and Meghan Knecht; juniors Raegan Sehdev, Kelly MacCluen, Madisyn Zadjeika, Madison Perna and Audrey Liu; sophomores Sarah Smith and Holly Hoover; and freshman Lizzy Benedict.

Losing Ng from last year’s 32-0 team—which won the program’s third Tournament of Champions title—will certainly hurt, but coach Jeff Holman has built Haddonfield into a juggernaut. The veteran coach will pass 1,000 career wins this season and the Bulldawgs will again be in the hunt for South Jersey and state championships.

Kingsway Dragons
The Dragons graduated their top two singles players from a year ago but have several talented players back in the fold. Senior Jessica Capasso played third singles as a junior and could be ready to move up a spot or two. Seniors Tiffany Crawford and Ashley Jenkins played first doubles together, while juniors Alyssa Friedman and Renee Tanner were a team at second doubles. All four players will be in line for starting spots again. Seniors Tanya George, Linda Liu, Melinda Phun and Edena Daniel and junior Lauren Magin will also contribute.

After going 12-6 and reaching the South Jersey Group III quarterfinals in 2012, the Dragons have the potential to be competitive in the Tri-County Conference and make a deep playoff run.

Lenape Indians
Lenape head coach John Carnevale does not expect senior Kesha Bauer, who played first singles and was an Olympic Conference American Division second-team all-star last year, to come out for the team this season. The Indians also lose Joy Chen and Joanna Ma, who graduated after winning the Burlington County first doubles title. Junior Lauren Gershman, who played second singles and made the all-conference first team, is the favorite to take over the top singles spot. Senior Melissa Olt also returns after playing third singles a year ago. Gabrielle Shvartsman, Joyce Li and Alyssa Lavin will most likely move into starting positions, as well.

The loss of Bauer is a big one, but the Indians have built a solid program and expect to remain competitive after going 12-7 and reaching the South Jersey Group IV quarterfinals in 2012.

Moorestown Friends Foxes
Sophomore Erin Chen is coming off a spectacular freshman campaign in which she was named to the all-Friends League first team, the all-county second team and the South Jersey Coaches Association Non-Public team. Another returning player with singles experience is junior Katie Teitelbaum, who was in the No. 3 spot in 2012. Junior Molly Fisher and sophomore Paige Hurley are back after playing second doubles together last year. Head coach Mike Bodary is also expecting big contributions from last year’s JV team, as well as incoming freshmen Grace Kim and Jess Ferber. Kim should compete for a spot at the top of the lineup.

Consistently one of the top South Jersey Non-Public B teams, the Foxes reached the sectional final last year and finished with an 11-7 record. With a strong singles lineup, they will be back in the mix once again and will also look for a Friends League playoff berth.

Moorestown Quakers
Senior Breezy Maravich returns after a remarkable junior season in which she went 30-6, won the Burlington County Open for the second straight year, won the singles title at the South Jersey Tennis Coaches Association Tournament, and reached the round of 16 in the state singles tournament. Also back are senior Kelly Hopkins, who went 25-5 and won the county title at third singles, and junior Siena Cashan, who was all-county second team at second doubles.

The Quakers went 18-5, won the South Jersey Group III championship for their 24th straight sectional title, and lost in the Group III state semifinals last year. They should again be a South Jersey contender, but one huge change is on the sidelines, as legendary coach Bill Kingston retired after leading the team since 1982. He was replaced by Steve Dickerson, a former college player and the father of standout Moorestown boys tennis player Ryan Dickerson.

Paul VI Eagles
The Eagles graduated a number of seniors from last year’s squad, so much of the lineup will be new. Senior Carly Devenny leads the list of returners after playing second singles a year ago. Other experienced players are sophomore Rachel Robb and junior Sarah Jablonowski, who played doubles in 2012.

The Eagles were in rebuilding mode last season under first-year coach Andrew Larzelere. They hope to make progress in 2013 on their way to becoming a winning program again.

Seneca Golden Eagles
Seneca is loaded with experienced players, as six of seven starters from last season are back, including four seniors who have played varsity since their freshman year in Alexandria Felt, Amanda Ritter, Angela Errigo and Jordan Meyer. Felt went 26-8 as a junior in her second season at first singles, was a finalist in the Olympic Conference Tournament and a semifinalist in the Burlington County Tournament, and was all-conference first team. Also back at singles are Ritter, who played second singles for the second straight year and was all-conference first team, and Errigo, who played third singles for the second straight year and was all-conference second team. Meyer was all-county first doubles, all-conference first doubles and made the state doubles tournament with the graduated Jaden Tyrell. The two other returning starters are juniors Katie O’Brien and Angela DeKlerk, who played second doubles together and were all-conference second team.

After going 20-5 and losing to Moorestown, 3-2, in the South Jersey Group III final, the Golden Eagles are hungry to send their seniors out with another terrific season. They will be contenders in the conference and South Jersey.

Shawnee Renegades
First singles player Delaney Kipple has graduated, but Shawnee returns several other starters from 2012, including junior Vienna Cordier and sophomore Allison Jones, who played second and third singles, respectively. Senior Colby Schweibenz and junior Gabrielle DiBattista were the first doubles tandem a year ago, while senior Narelle Kipple played second doubles.

As a young team in 2012, Shawnee struggled to a 5-11 season as it moved from the Olympic Conference Patriot Division to the large-school American Division. But with most of the varsity squad returning, the valuable experience from last year should benefit this year’s team as new head coach Stefani Kirk takes over.

Washington Township Minutemaids
First singles player Avianna Paraggio graduated after earning all-county honorable-mention honors, but the Minutemaids do return senior Kelsey Bevenour, who played second singles and was all-conference second team. Senior Marygail Muller (pictured), who played third singles, is another returning starter. Senior Christine Durante and juniors Megan Custer, Jillian Calandra and Vanessa Fath are members of last year’s team who could compete for starting positions.

The Minutemaids went 8-8, won the Gloucester County team title and lost in the first round of the South Jersey Group IV playoffs. Head coach Rich Flemming stepped down and was replaced by Washington Township boys coach Cindy Surplus, who inherits a girls program that is traditionally among the best in Gloucester County.
