Star Coaches: October, 2012

by Editorial Staff, Suburban Family magazine

Mike Ricci (pictured)
Mount Laurel
Ricci, the coach of the Mount Laurel Striders, which is for children ages 5-16, is always instilling the importance of community service to his young athletes. That’s why on Sept. 23, rather than hanging out at home watching TV or playing video games, the team took part in the 3rd Annual Kate’s Place 5K, which benefits day programs for developmentally delayed teens and young adults in Moorestown. The year-round team, which Ricci has been coaching for 23 years, also helped facilitate the event, as they participate in regular meets and help out at fundraisers throughout the year.

Rich Bostwick
Washington Township
The Washington Township High School boys cross country team, led by Bostwick, won a major race at the Wild Safari Challenge in Jackson. The team placed second out of 80 teams, with a team average of 16 minutes, 24 seconds for the top five runners, setting a new school record. The team, featuring Kyle Leonard, Alex Williamson, Dave Hazel, Ian Kulis and Anthony Mills, are now ranked third in the state.

Clyde Folsom
West Deptford
West Deptford football coach Clyde Folsom reached his 200th career victory this season. The milestone game was against Woodbury with a final score of 45-32 on Sept. 14. This is Folsom’s 22nd year at West Deptford.

Head coach Jason Kurtz and assistant coaches Gary Terwilliger and Jeff Ucello
Medford
This team of coaches led the young athletes of the Medford Sluggers baseball team to capture the title of the Medford 2nd Grade Recreational Championship. They had a record of 4-7-1 to start with, but then won three straight playoff games.

Jeffrey Holman
Haddonfield
The Haddonfield girls’ tennis coach managed to coach not one, but two teams to the doubles finals at the Camden County Tennis Tournament at Eastern. Haddonfield’s first doubles team of Erica Pascocello and Arpie Senopoulos fought past the school’s second doubles team of Chelsea Brown and Sylvia Strauss to take home the doubles title at the event.

Tom Reilly
Marlton
Reilly, of the Marlton Chiefs football program, is being inducted into the Marlton Football Hall of Fame this month, an award he will receive by U.S. Rep. Jon Runyan. He has been a coach and benefactor of the program for more than 15 years. His and his wife’s donations have led to new lights and a scoreboard at Marlton’s field, and they have remained involved in the organization long after their sons graduated from it.

Karl Moehlmann
Cherry Hill
Moehlmann, a German teacher and soccer coach at Cherry Hill East, will retire at the end of this season. His career record at the start of this season was 261-133-32 after being with the Cougars for 24 years. He’s also taught German for 35 years. Among his accomplishments are nine conference championships and creating the boys volleyball program at East.

Ali Collins
Moorestown
Coming off a strong 15-6-1 season last year, Moorestown High School girls field hockey coach Collins had her team starting the season at 7-0. The Quakers are outscoring their opponents 28-3 thanks to Collins’ leadership.

Neal Musmanno
Washington Township
Thanks largely to the leadership of Musmanno, the Washington Township U11B Storm have made it onto the third round of the New Jersey Youth Soccer State Cup tournament. His team defeated opponents during a tournament on Sept. 22 and 23 to earn their place against Manalapan Dynamite in hopes to make it to the State Finals. The NJYS state finals will take place at the end of October.

Tim Linehan
Haddonfield
Linehan is doing something right with the Paul VI girls volleyball team. With a 10-1 record, the girls are having their best season since the program began just three years ago. In their inaugural year, they claimed just four wins.

Bill Shea, Alex Falzone, Rich Spisak and Frank Wechsler
Marlton
The coaches of the Marlton Recreation Council’s Cross Country program, made up of middle school-aged kids, has led their young athletes to victory. The program is currently ranked No. 1 in South Jersey after an impressive matchup at the South Jersey Shootout at the end of September. The MRC boys’ team came in first place in the 1.62-mile race against 17 other teams. The girls’ team came in an impressive fourth place.

Jamie McGroarty
Voorhees
McGroarty has led his Eastern girls’ soccer team to a 7-0 record this season, as of earlier this month, after defeating Olympic Conference American Division contenders Lenape High School in a double overtime victory.
