Under coaches Flocco, Cinelli, Guerra and Giangiullio, the Angels (pictured) of the Marlton Recreation Council’s 11-12 baseball league were crowned champions in June at Kessler Field. They defeated the Phillies 6-4 to gain the title. Each player had an important role in securing the victory, as great pitching and timely hitting were the keys to the game.

Hamisi Tarrant and Shelby Smith
Cherry Hill
In June, Tarrant and Shelby were recognized by the Cherry Hill School District Board of Education for their hard work organizing the S.T.A.R. (Specially Talented Athletes Recognized) games. The Cherry Hill West boys’ basketball coaches, along with more than 40 student volunteers, put together the games for 180 Cherry Hill K-12 students, with events like wiffle ball and track and field.

Dan Bartolomeo, Dave Cernava, Tony Kiefner, Kevin King and Michelle Vasell
Mount Laurel
Mt. Laurel’s 10U Storm girls’ travel softball team went 12-0 during the regular season before concluding with a victory over Moorestown at the UGSA 10U Freedom Division Championship in June. The guidance of coaches Bartolomeo, Cernava, Kiefner, King and Vasell fostered in the girls the values of sportsmanship and teamwork, which helped them to come out as the undefeated champions this season.

Kevin Kotch, Eric Etkins, Greg Fink and Glen Lawless
The 11U Marlton Cardinals, led by head coach Kotch and assistant coaches Etkins, Fink and Lawless, won the Marlton Mayhem tournament in late June, defeating three area teams in their age bracket.

Brian Gibney
After 38 years of dedicated service, Shawnee High School’s boys soccer coach has retired. Gibney leaves his position as a local legend, with a South Jersey record for coaching victories at 665, 13 sectional championships, seven national rankings, and 12 South Jersey coaches tournament wins. He is also retiring from his career as a guidance counselor.

Ally Kenney
Washington Township
Kenney, a former four-year starter for the Washington Township High School soccer team, was promoted to top assistant soccer coach at LaSalle University. She played for the team all through college and has been coaching as a volunteer assistant ever since she graduated in 2010 under LaSalle’s head women’s soccer coach, Paul Royal.

Jamie McGroarty
The Eastern High School Girl’s softball team won their first state title in 26 years thanks to the guidance of their coach, McGroarty. Finishing on top, the Vikings won a Group 4 state crown with a 2-0 victory over Hunterdon Central in Toms River in June. This was the first state crown won by the Vikings softball team since 1986. It is only the second state title won in the program’s history.

Bob Korchak
A successful lacrosse season is celebrated by the third- and fourth-grade Warriors led by head coach, Korchak. The Warriors finished with a 12-5 record, going 5-0 at the South Jersey Lacrosse tournament in June.

Ike Johnson
Coach Johnson led the Net Raiders, a tennis team comprised of talented young boys and girls from the Moorestown Tennis Club, to a second place finish in the USTA New Jersey District Finals. The team of seven competitors celebrated their end of the season win with medals.
