Gov. Chris Christie recently penned a thank you letter to Washington Township High School social studies teacher Mason pictured above with two students and her U.S. History II class, congratulating them for their efforts to raise money for victims of genocide in Darfur. Students created bracelets in the colors of the Sudanese flag and sold them to garner funds needed to repair a broken water pump in a Sudanese village. The class collected more than $400.

Cherokee High School teachers Gallo, Mills and Scheinberg were recognized by the Lenape Regional High School District as “Outstanding Leaders in Educational Technology.” These teachers have been seamlessly integrating technology throughout the educational experience.

After winning school Teacher of the Year in January and Burlington County Teacher of the Year honors this month, Lenape High School science teacher Murray will now compete for State Teacher of the Year. Along with the distinct honor as being named the county’s best teacher, Murray will be asked to serve on county panels, committees, and task forces and will also attend speaking engagements throughout the year.
Amy Carpinelli

Washington Township science teacher Carpinelli was chosen as a presenter at the National Science Teachers Association’s (NSTA) STEM Expo and Forum in Atlantic City this month. Carpinelli’s presentation will introduce fellow educators to the design and analysis of 3-D topographic maps for use in middle school.
Dr. Barbara Kreider
Moorestown
Dr. Kreider, the science department chair at Moorestown Friends School, helped organize an innovative science fair for the whole school in April. At the 14th annual Science and Engineering Exposition, the Middle and Upper School students displayed science projects and posters, engaged in competitions and played science/engineering-related games. The Lower School students were the audience, while the Upper School students were the teachers, demonstrating science principles for the young learners.
Christy Marrella-Davis
Marrella-Davis, a humanities teacher at Rosa International Middle School, was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies to be honored as a Delaware Valley Teacher All-Star at Teacher Appreciation Night on May 11. She was chosen based on an essay written by Jonathan Silverstone, a 2011 graduate of Cherry Hill East.
Michele Montrose
Shamong
The students in Montrose’s seventh-grade language arts classes have been focused on developing empathy, reducing prejudice and stopping bullying in the classroom and throughout Indian Mills Memorial School in Shamong. Montrose has assigned five novels along with writing pieces, short stories and creative projects to achieve her classroom goals. For her efforts, the New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education awarded her the Jack Zaifman Humanitarian Award.
Brian Betze
Moorestown
Betze was named the new superintendent of the Moorestown School District. He previously served as the superintendent of the Berlin Township School District and will begin his position at the start of July. During the past 25 years, Betze has held leadership positions at the middle school, high school and district level in Cherry Hill, Washington Township and Shamong. He also served as supervisor of curriculum and special education in Linwood. Under his leadership in Berlin in 2009, Dwight D. Eisenhower Middle School was named one of the state's "Schools to Watch.”

Haddonfield teacher Duffy will be recognized at an awards banquet for his 30 years of service to the district. Duffy instructs world languages at Haddonfield Memorial High School.

Thanks to the efforts of reading specialist LaSalvia, second-grade teacher Madewell, and the Beeler’s Family Literacy Committee, Beeler Elementary School enjoyed an extended “Read Across America” celebration with an assembly by the Multiple Sclerosis Society, read-a-thons and an appearance by children’s book author Kay Winters.
Sherrie McLaughlin
Cherry Hill
McLaughlin believes in the importance of parental involvement, especially among dads. The president of the Kingston Elementary Parent Teacher Association helped organize the first-ever “Race Night with Dad” event for the school, which earned the organization this year’s New Jersey Parent Teacher Association “Father’s PRIDE Award,” presented at the annual NJPTA Awards Banquet recently. The award is presented to a local PTA that actively promotes programs to increase participation of fathers within the school.
Kelly Wormann
Voorhees
Wormann, a music teacher at Osage Middle School, won a $2,000 grant from the NEA Foundation, a nonprofit helping to further educators and their students. She will now complete a musicianship and leadership program to learn important skills and musical techniques, which will later be brought back to the classroom.
