Patel, a senior at Lenape High School, was the only Burlington County student to be named a National Merit Scholarship winner and one of 88 New Jersey students to be chosen for the $2,500 scholarship. She’s part of a very small group: Only 1 percent of the 22,000 nationwide entries were selected as semifinalists and only 8,300 students won.

Udotong, a senior at Cinnaminson High School, received a $2,500 National Achievement scholarship. Awarded to only 700 students nationwide, the scholarship is given to black high school students with excellent PSAT scores and academics. Udotong will study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the fall.

Joseph Kiernan

Kiernan was accepted into the New Jersey Scholars Program this year. Kiernan was one of 39 students in the state selected to attend a five-week residential summer program at the Lawrenceville School, where students explore important educational and cultural topics. This year’s program is titled “Immigration: Demographic Disaster or Cultural Recreator?”

Madeline Bowne
Cherry Hill
Bowne, an eighth-grader at John A. Carusi Middle School, placed second in the national 2012 C-Span video documentary contest, dubbed “StudentCam,” for her self-produced film on women’s rights. She was one of eight students awarded in her category and received $750 in addition to bragging rights.

James A. Garfield Elementary School’s first-grade students
Collingswood
These students were tasked with reading 1,000 books in four months by the Mayor’s Book Club. Their reward, should they succeed: $1,000 to purchase new reading materials for the classroom. But the class raised the stakes and read 2,000 titles, earning their promised reward, a party with the mayor and two books for each student to take home.

Alec Goldfarb
Mount Laurel
Goldfarb won a DownBeat Student Music Award in April. He took home a first-place win for Original Composition in Outstanding High School Performances for his piece entitled “Pendulum.” Goldfarb plays guitar and is a senior at Lenape High School.

Alexander Glass and Madlyn Kates
