Choosing the right college major on the right campus is an important decision – one that can shape the trajectory of the rest of your life. Your degree will curate the opportunities available to you after graduation and the college you attend provides not just a unique set of networking opportunities, but a lifetime of memories as well.
The decision can be a daunting one to make, but a liberal arts education from Lycoming College may be the best fit for you.
“Just the other day, I heard somebody say a liberal arts degree is basically a master key to the world,” says Jessica Snover, director of admissions recruitment and 2017 Lycoming College graduate. “[A liberal arts degree] really gives you the opportunity to become a well-rounded individual.”
With a curriculum aimed at not just mastering one specific subject but rather exposing a student to a wide range of subjects – including math, science, English and more – students exit their programs with a greater understanding of the world around them.
Lycoming is a great school for students with many interests as its wide range of academic programs – from biology and pre-med to film, education and more – ellow students to experiment and to find their perfect fit.
“We have very niche programming in astrophysics, archaeology, creative writing and things like that, all the way to ones that you will find at larger universities like business and psychology,” says Snover. “But [because we’re a small college] we have the ability and the dedicated faculty to really offer amazing things for students who are looking to dive deeper into their material or are looking for additional support.”
Beyond the classroom, each student at Lycoming is required to attain an Enhanced Academic Experience (EAE) and is assisted in doing so by The Center for Enhanced Academic Experiences. With 19 pathways toward completing this requirement, students are given the chance to pursue their individual interests and to leave college with more than just a degree.
Options that include studying abroad, working with a professor on research, completing an internship with a local or national company or taking on a minor allow students to gain real world experience and open their eyes to new skills and perspectives.
“We make it very attainable for students, simply because we understand that it’s typically something students want to do and that they’re excited about.” says Snover. “It’s a great experience, especially for students to put on their resume as they’re gearing up for graduation.”
While Lycoming’s academic programs are certainly impressive, the true college experience is about more than academics. For many, it’s an exciting time filled with new experiences and people, allowing them to also open up their minds to new ideas and perspectives.
At Lycoming, students find just that. With over 60 clubs, 19 varsity athletic teams, an Outdoor Leadership & Education program, Greek life and 15 local community service partners, there is plenty to explore.
“Small colleges are so special because they give you the opportunity to be involved in so many different things throughout your time,” says Snover. “We find that our students are involved in multiple clubs and organizations because they enjoy it, they enjoy the people and it's fun for them.”
Gain real-life experience and enhance your storytelling skills through the college newspaper, Lycourier, or explore the world of radio broadcasting through the student-run radio station 91.7 WRLC-FM. Embrace your own background and celebrate others’ by joining one of Lycoming’s cultural clubs, or stand up for your passions and raise awareness through advocacy organizations on campus, such as Lycoming’s chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention or the Lycoming Environmental Awareness Foundation.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to opportunities to connect, serve, and explore at Lycoming College.
Students are encouraged to find their perfect fit by scheduling a campus visit – available both in-person and online – or visit its website to learn more about their degree programs, financial aid opportunities and student life.
“Lycoming gave me the most amazing experience and completely shaped the rest of my life,” says Snover. “It is simply a wonderful community where people genuinely care for one another and work together to make it a thriving, supportive place to be.”
