Bishop Eustace
Crusaders
Players to watch: Bishop Eustace is happy to welcome back the anchor of its defense: senior Brady McDonough, a four-year starter who made the all-conference first team as a junior. McDonough, who also scored two goals, is joined on the back line by another solid veteran, senior Benjamin Mrvica, along with juniors Vinny DiSabatino and Jake Ratcliffe and sophomore Dominic DeMarco. They will assist sophomore goalie Carson Brandt, who earned the starting job as a rookie and notched 108 saves. DiSabatino also contributes in the midfield with senior Daniel Rush; they both scored a pair of goals last season. Juniors Massimo Sergi and Vincent Barrera and sophomores Shawn Dodeja and Ty Lee return in the midfield as well, while junior Luca Cicchini and sophomore Braedon DeAngelis are forwards to keep an eye on. Senior Paul Mass and junior Riley DeVault can both play up top and in the midfield. Several freshmen from a large incoming class have the potential to make an immediate impact on the varsity level.
Outlook: Last year was a rebuilding one for the Crusaders, but thanks to McDonough leading the defense and a young core that gained valuable varsity experience, they should be much improved this fall.
Cherokee
Chiefs
Players to watch: Four starters return for Cherokee, including junior Ashton Ritter, who scored two goals and tied for the team lead with six assists to make the all-conference first team as a sophomore. He forms a strong duo in the midfield with senior Liam McCloskey, who was second on the team with five goals. They will be key to generating scoring chances for the Chiefs. The other two returning starters are focused on keeping opposing teams off the scoreboard: senior defender Josh Failbus and junior goalie Cole Butler, who made 53 saves in his first season as the starter. Juniors Ethan Coffina and Ryan Hoffman showed offensive potential as sophomores and will contribute up top and in the midfield. Junior Christopher Weaver will look to earn a role on the back line and junior Luke Gilmore adds depth in net. Cherokee’s overall speed and conditioning will be beneficial to filling out the rest of the starting lineup.
Outlook: The Chiefs followed up their state championship season in 2022 by going 10-2-4 – the third year in a row they reached double digits in wins – and reaching the sectional quarterfinals before falling to Lenape in PKs. There are a number of positions to fill but the program’s winning tradition should continue.
Cherry Hill East
Cougars
Players to watch: Cherry Hill East brings back a talented nucleus, particularly at the offensive end, where the returners include a pair of all-conference players: senior midfielder Henry Dombrowski and junior forward Cruz Candray. Dombrowski scored six goals and led the Cougars with seven assists to make the first team, despite missing nine games. Candray paced East with seven goals and added two assists for second-team honors. Seniors Kevin Garvin (four goals, two assists) and Mustafa Ahmad (four goals) and junior Nolan Perry (one goal, three assists) are other playmakers in the midfield. Seniors Andrew Gallardo, Jared Blumenthal and Dmitry Camarre and junior Patrick Weinstein are experienced midfielders as well. Defensively, the Cougars suffered some key losses, namely all-South Jersey goalie Tom Piotrowski. Seniors Jack Luehrs and Seth Stern-Taubman will look to fill the void in net, while seniors Vincent DelBono, Matt Allen and Matt Cyganik will provide size, speed, strength and stability on the back line.
Outlook: Cherry Hill East posted a 10-6-2 record in 2023, reaching double figures in wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time in more than a decade. They have a chance at extending that streak to three and going on a playoff run this fall.
Cherry Hill West
Lions
Players to watch: Cherry Hill West suffered huge losses with the graduation of South Jersey Goalie of the Year Leo Orefice and a season-ending injury to senior back Justin Smith, an all-South Jersey first-teamer. The good news is that all-conference second-teamer Aiden Ryder and fellow senior Sekou Tarrant return as important pieces of the back line, and senior Christian Pacella is a returning defensive midfielder who made the all-conference first team. Junior Jason Audino will also contribute in the back and junior Cooper Macri adds defensive depth, while Orlando Morales and Jonah Schottland will both see time in net as the replacements for Orefice. Senior forwards Jacob Cohen (four goals, one assist) and Drew Pullano (three goals) will pace the offense along with senior Jordan Marrero, who is coming back to high school soccer after playing academy club ball. Junior Jeffrey Morse and seniors Leonardo Ibanez, Christopher Williams, Andres Soler and Jarett Hoch will also aid the attack, and seniors Dominik Krzton and Noah Mateo also hope to have an impact.
Outlook: Cherry Hill West was again one of the elite teams in South Jersey last year, reaching the Coaches Cup quarterfinals and sectional semifinals on its way to an 11-6-3 final record. The Lions will continue to set high expectations in 2024.
Clearview
Pioneers
Players to watch: A deep and talented senior class graduated from Clearview, but as always, the program will look to reload and remain competitive. Leading the returners is senior forward Matt Gahan, who scored eight goals to go with six assists and earned all-conference first-team recognition. He forms a solid playmaking duo with senior midfielder Chase Kaufman, who tied for the team lead with eight assists and also scored twice. Senior forward Brady DiVito is another scoring threat, and key players in the midfield are senior Julian Lee and junior Samson Cofran. An outstanding defense suffered major losses but will turn to experienced veterans like seniors Michael Kugler and Rhys Anderson and juniors Luke Marino and Luke Zuba to hold down the fort as a new starting goalie takes over.
Outlook: The Pioneers are coming off a historic season in which they won the Coaches Cup for the first time ever and also captured the South Jersey, Group 3 championship before finishing with a 17-3-4 record and securing the No. 19 ranking in the state. There are certainly important positions to fill, but opponents should continue to expect a battle every time out from one of the area’s most consistent teams.
Eastern
Vikings
Players to watch: Eastern graduated most of its offensive playmakers but is thrilled to welcome back senior center back Dylan Johnson, a starter since his freshman year and an all-conference first-team selection last season. Johnson also served as a captain last fall and will continue to provide leadership on and off the field. Senior Chase Dougherty is another veteran defender and his experience will prove valuable as the Vikings break in a new starting goalie. Dougherty can also assist the offense, which will look to juniors Logan Cherkas and Liam Keet to generate scoring opportunities. Seniors Austin Dai, Matt Capriotti, Jacobo Obando, Nate Linden and Brady Lynch and junior Nathan Zanetich will look to play bigger roles as well.
Outlook: The Vikings went 14-6-1—the most wins among Olympic Conference teams – and also qualified for the Coaches Cup and reached the sectional quarterfinals in a successful 2023 campaign. Their defense should keep them in most games this fall and if the offense develops, another winning season is in the cards.
Gloucester Catholic
Rams
Players to watch: Junior forward Zack Payne has established himself as one of the top scorers in the Tri-County Conference Classic Division over his first two seasons and it will be exciting to see what he can do as an upperclassman. He had nine goals and seven assists as a sophomore to make the all-conference second team. Payne will be supported offensively by senior Danny Bogan, a playmaker at center midfield who had two goals and two assists. Senior forward Drew Grossman and senior midfielder Jose Medina will also contribute to the attack. Senior Liam Giles is another experienced midfielder and sophomores Sam Myers and Shane Thornton will be counted on defensively. Junior Jason Grossman is a talented midfielder but also saw time in net last year and could take over as the starting goalie.
Outlook: After consecutive seven-win seasons, the Rams hope to contend for a winning record behind Payne and Bogan.
Haddonfield
Bulldawgs
Players to watch: Senior Michael McCool, a four-year varsity player and first-time captain, is the unquestioned leader for Haddonfield. He moved from left back to center midfield last year and collected seven goals and three assists to make the all-conference first team. Possessing a dangerous left foot, he will be asked to do a little bit of everything as the Bulldawgs’ best overall player. Several promising returners up top will vie to become the team’s new go-to scorer, including sophomore Mark Derets, who had three goals and an assist as a rookie and has the potential to be one of the top forwards in the Colonial Conference. Junior Fredy Tun Caal had four goals and an assist in his first year with the program and has the skill to garner more minutes this fall, while speedy senior Connor Williams – who had three goals last season, including one in a playoff loss to eventual state finalist Delran – is another top scoring threat. Juniors Luke Hart and Mark DiMedio both contributed in the midfield and on the back line as sophomores and will play important roles no matter where they line up, and junior Luke Bonder is another key returner who can play forward or holding midfielder. Sophomore Henry Hall exceled as a fullback and defensive midfielder as a freshman and will again be an asset on D, while senior Tom Flanagan is another experienced defender. Junior midfielder/defender Owen Ryan and junior forward Caden Price are hoping to earn consistent minutes as well, and sophomore Adam Brand is a promising varsity newcomer who will look to lock down the starting goalie job.
Outlook: Haddonfield played much better down the stretch last year following a 3-8 start – including a first-round playoff win over Manchester Township and a 2-1 loss to old nemesis Delran in the sectional quarterfinals – but still finished 9-10-1 for the program’s first losing season in nearly four decades. This group will clearly be motivated to get the Bulldawgs back on track.
Kingsway
Dragons
Players to watch: Kingsway brings back a handful of key players, including two who made the all-conference second team: senior forward Logan Theodore, who had four goals and two assists and will look to emerge as the Dragons’ go-to scorer, and senior midfielder Gabe Trexler, a valuable contributor at both ends of the field. Senior back Colin McCourt also returns and will look to fortify the defense. Seniors Justin Sanchez, Alex Dougherty and Justin Lewis are key players in the midfield. Seniors Evan Frederick and Lucas Allen, juniors Dom Nguyen and Will Warner and sophomore Pat Civitarese will all look to earn time on defense and sophomore Danny Casey adds depth in the midfield. Senior Hunter Crawford, junior Connor Brown and sophomore Talan Vannelli are in the mix to take over as the starting goalie.
Outlook: Kingsway’s 8-7-4 season included a trip to the Coaches Cup quarterfinals and a close loss to Cherokee in the first round of the playoffs. The Dragons are a perennial contender in the Tri-County Conference Royal Division with a chance to make noise in the postseason, and this year should be no different.
Lenape
Indians
Players to watch: Lenape returns a strong core from a team that reached the sectional semifinals, including two all-conference players and one of its leading scorers. Senior forward Antonio Perez shared the team-high with seven goals and will pace the attack with senior midfielder Lukas Heon, a four-year varsity player who had four goals and three assists as a junior to make the all-conference second team. Junior forward Jebry Sanchez and junior midfielders Justin Fagan and Logan Cleary will also be called upon to generate scoring opportunities. Senior Santiago Villalba and junior Landon Wetzel are other key players in the midfield. Senior William Reid is back to lead the defense after earning all-conference first-team honors, and he can also contribute offensively as evidenced by his four assists. Senior Constantine Moussouttas (three goals) is also a top defender who can put the ball in the net, and other experienced backs are seniors Keegan Weipz and Andrew Szymanik. They are backed by senior goalie Evan Gonzalez, who posted 56 saves and comes in with a season of experience under his belt.
Outlook: The Indians went 11-7-4—improving by eight wins over the year before—and reached the semifinals in both the Coaches Cup and South Jersey, Group 4 in a memorable 2023 campaign. Another strong season appears likely.
Moorestown
Quakers
Players to watch: Declan Capps has led Moorestown in goals each of the past two years and is poised for a big senior season. The midfielder had eight goals and four assists as a junior on his way to all-conference first-team and all-South Jersey second-team accolades. Seniors Jeremy Ho, Sam Angelini and Jake Every-Clayton are other experienced playmakers. The Quakers are also strong defensively thanks to the return of all-conference second-team back Charlie Byrd-Leitner, a senior who contributed a goal and five assists as well. Seniors Paul Canton and Luke Damien are other key pieces of the defense and senior Michael Dellarosa will be in the mix to take over as the starting goalie. Juniors Logan Zimmer and Jack Vernick are other top returners.
Outlook: Moorestown captured the Olympic Conference National Division title with a 5-1 league record and finished 10-9 overall after falling to eventual sectional champion Clearview in the South Jersey, Group 3 quarterfinals. The Quakers expect to be division and sectional contenders with Capps leading the way.
Moorestown Friends
Foxes
Players to watch: Moorestown Friends welcomes back an outstanding senior class led by midfielder Preston Galanis, a four-year starter who scored 19 goals to go with 11 assists as a junior. He made the all-league first team and the all-South Jersey third team and should be one of the top playmakers in the area this fall. He is far from alone, however, as senior center back Matt Schlotterbeck and senior wingback/midfielder Jared Kolaris are other talented veterans. Schlotterbeck had eight goals and six assists while anchoring the defense to make the all-league first team, and Kolaris had 10 goals and nine assists on his way to second-team recognition. Midfielder Vikram Verma (five goals, four assists) is another key senior, and juniors Alex Kostopoulos, Vincent Lu and Dean Simpson and sophomores Allen Aurelien and Charlie McFadden are offensive contributors as well. Senior Jaylen Miller is a returner on the back line, which must step up following the graduation of all-South Jersey goalie Jonah Bierig. Other returners hoping to make an impact are seniors Josh Carroll, Jadin Figueroa and Miles Wilkins.
Outlook: The Foxes went 14-6-2 and captured their fourth sectional championship since 2015 before falling to old nemesis Gill St. Bernard’s in the state final. Hopes are high once again as the program transitions from the Friends Schools League into the Burlington County Scholastic League, where the bus rides will be shorter but Moorestown Friends should be just as competitive as always.
Paul VI
Eagles
Players to watch: Paul VI said goodbye to a stellar senior class but brings back a solid core ready to take over leadership of the team. That includes senior Travis Hemphill, a defensive midfielder/back who made the all-conference first team and will be a thorn in the side of opposing forwards. Seniors Cameron Connelly, Tony Contento and Jake Lenthe are other experienced defenders, and senior Matthew Corsetti is back after splitting time in net and recording 39 saves. He is joined by sophomore Jorden Espino, who saw time at goalie as a rookie. Senior forward Zenon Nark will be a key player offensively after scoring six goals and chipping in two assists last season. Junior forward Chase Giambri (two goals, four assists) will also be counted on up top, while seniors Jett Dean and Luke Plunkett, junior Joey Siciliano and sophomore Patrick Coyle will also contribute at forward and in the midfield.
Outlook: The Eagles had another impressive run last year, going 10-6-3 with a playoff victory and finishing tied for second in the Olympic Conference National Division. They look like division contenders again in 2024.
Seneca
Golden Eagles
Players to watch: Seneca brings back a talented nucleus that includes senior center midfielder Luke Rath, who scored five goals and led the Golden Eagles with eight assists to earn all-conference first-team honors. Junior Chris Rath (two goals, two assists) also returns at the position along with sophomore Bradley Cooper, who will look to build on the potential he showed as a rookie. Senior James Amendola and junior Ryan Daniels will be key players vying for playing time in the midfield as well. Senior Travis Bauer (three goals, two assists) and junior Jake Bauer (one goal, two assists) will get plenty of minutes on the wing and junior Cody Klym will contribute at forward after not playing high school soccer last year. Seniors Joey DiMenna and Ryan Grossmick will also push for time at forward. The defense is anchored by senior Dimitri Perez, an all-conference first-teamer and returning captain, and junior Anthony Giafaglione. Junior Vaughn Worthing and senior Gavin Tallant, who is back after missing last season with an injury, are other important defenders, while senior Ben Epps and juniors Will Kwelty and Brody Bottiglieri also hope to make an impact on the back line. Junior Pat Fluharty, who made 91 saves and received all-conference second-team accolades, is back in net and senior Joe Henske has also proven to be a capable goalie.
Outlook: Seneca’s 8-9-2 season included a tie for second in the Olympic Conference National Division and a close loss to Mainland in the first round of the playoffs. With a ton of experience back in the fold, the Golden Eagles expect to be competitive in the division and make a postseason run this fall.
Shawnee
Renegades
Players to watch: Seven starters are back from Shawnee’s sectional finalist team, including two who have made the all-conference first team the past two seasons and also received all-South Jersey second-team honors last year: senior forward Sean McFadden and senior midfielder Jacob Santamaria. McFadden led the Renegades with 10 goals and also dished out six assists, while Santamaria had five goals and two assists. His brother, senior Aiden Santamaria, is also a top returner in the midfield who had five goals and a team-high eight assists on his way to all-conference second-team accolades. Senior forward Anthony Carabasi contributes to the attack as well and had three goals and seven assists. The defense is equally impressive, with all-conference first-teamer and three-year starter Cale Stielau, a senior, leading the way. Juniors Cooper Adinolfi and Darrin Doyle are other returning starters on the back line, and junior defender Cole Johnson is rejoining the program after MLS Next with Real NJ. Shawnee must replace all-conference goalie Braeden Hurley, and senior Clark Mangan will look to lock down the job. Senior Mac Wolson and junior Santiago Estevez are other players to watch offensively and junior Jackson Artman adds depth on defense. Senior Adam Reynolds and junior Antonio Ramos will also look to play expanded roles.
Outlook: The Renegades posted a 13-3-3 record, claimed their fourth straight Olympic Conference American Division title and reached the South Jersey, Group 3 final for the second consecutive season during another highly successful season in 2023. Their veteran group is hungry for a sectional championship and should certainly be in contention for one again this fall.
Washington Township
Minutemen
Players to watch: Washington Township will look much different this fall following the graduation of South Jersey Midfielder of the Year Drew Heil and all-South Jersey forward Ajani Dwyer, not to mention the retirement of longtime coach Shane Snyder. But new coach Ed McCusker does inherit a solid core that includes six returning starters led by all-conference second-team midfielders Nick Guzak and Sean Tarsatana. Guzak scored seven goals and set up eight others, while Tarsatana added four goals and eight assists. Senior Brett Egan (three goals, seven assists) and junior Landon Heil (six assists) are other returning starters in the midfield who will contribute to the offense, and seniors Justin Pagano (four goals) and Angelo Troia (one goal, four assists) are experienced forwards. Junior Robbie Finnegan returns on the back line in front of senior goalie Pete Louvaris (91 saves). Seniors Dom Grassi, Owen Cafferty and Peter Passalaqua add depth on defense and senior Jac Connor returns in the midfield. Other veterans hoping to push for time are seniors Nick DeCosta and Collin Merrigan and juniors Trey Egan, Cole Belsanti and Maximo Maletta.
Outlook: Snyder guided the Minutemen to an 18-2-2 record, a division title, the Coaches Cup final and the South Jersey, Group 4 crown in his 14th and final season, a tenure that included three state championships and seven sectional titles. McCusker, a former standout player and assistant coach under Snyder, will look to keep Washington Township among the elite programs in the area.
