2024 High School Boys Cross Country Preview
High School Boys Cross Country Preview of Runners to Watch and the 2024-25 Season Outlook, plus the complete schedule

by Staff

Bishop Eustace
Crusaders

Runners to watch: Bishop Eustace returns two key runners from a special 2023 team, including senior Ethan Caprarola, who clocked a 17:44 at Holmdel Park to place fifth in the state among Non-Public B competitors. He also placed seventh at the Bob Kiessling sectional meet and broke 17 minutes at the Olympic Conference Championships, and is looking forward to a big final season with the Crusaders. Junior Alexander Dietz is another top returner who consistently ran in the 19-20-minute range at the major races and helped Eustace secure the state crown. Both went on to run at the Meet of Champions, with Caprarola posting the best time at 18:23. Senior Desmond Carey, a former soccer player, is a promising newcomer who is coming off a strong outdoor track season and is expected to have a big impact.

Outlook: Despite having just a five-man roster for most of last season, the Crusaders showed a lot of heart in capturing the Non-Public B state championship following a third-place performance at sectionals. Hopefully, their success generates more interest in the program and they have a full team for their title defense.

Camden Catholic
Fighting Irish

Runners to watch: Senior Sean Leahy emerged as Camden Catholic’s No. 1 runner as a junior and leads a deep roster for the Irish this fall. He was first on the team at the Camden County Championships (12th overall), the Olympic Conference Championships (27th) and states, as he clocked a 17:53 at Holmdel Park to take 44th. Leahy also placed ninth at the Bob Kiessling sectional meet with a time of 17:30. Junior Seamus Bieg is another key veteran who finished 11th at sectionals, while sophomores Brayden Magee and Andrew Blum were both in the top 20 as well and will look to take the next step with a year of experience under their belts. Senior Eric Lopez took 21st at sectionals and added a strong showing at states, posting a time of 18:34. Sean Alfaro is another top senior, and other returners with potential are juniors Sean Burns, Dylan McGrath and Christopher Parsons and sophomores Steven Pisasale, Richard Wang, Aidan Earney and Giovanni Barile.

Outlook: With all but one of their top runners back in the fold, the Irish hope to contend for a sectional title and make their presence felt at the other major meets.

Cherokee
Chiefs

Runners to watch: Cherokee graduated two-time sectional champion Nick Kuenkel but welcomes back several runners who are more than ready to move into the No. 1 spot on the team. That includes senior Liam Tindall, who had top-five finishes at the Burlington County Open, Olympic Conference Championships and sectionals, where he ran 15:38 for fourth. At Holmdel Park, he clocked a 16:15 to place 15th at states and a 16:24 for 31st at the Meet of Champions. He was rewarded with all-South Jersey honors from the South Jersey Track Coaches Association. Junior Logan Bromley is another veteran leader who placed third in the county and sixth in the conference before missing the latter half of the season. Sophomore Ben Realley showed loads of potential as a rookie, placing in the top 10 in the county and conference races, 15th at sectionals and 28th at states. Ben Weiner and Anthony DiBattista are key seniors who finished in the top 20 at sectionals, while sophomore Sean Sooy posted a 5K PR of 17:03 and improved throughout track season, running 4:36 in the mile and 9:50 in the two-mile. Junior Dominic Pileri and senior Enzo Corona round out a terrific returning core, and freshman Jack Tindall – Liam’s brother – should be a top seven runner in his rookie season.

Outlook: The Chiefs were county, conference and sectional champions once more in 2023 to go with a third at states and a ninth at the MOC. They’ll certainly miss Kuenkel but have the talent to remain among the area’s elite.

Cherry Hill East
Cougars

Runners to watch: Brody Bogos made significant strides as a junior and was Cherry Hill East’s top finisher at sectionals (11th), states (26th) and the Meet of Champions (50th). He also took eighth at the Olympic Conference Championships and consistently posted times in the 16-minute range. He hopes to contend at the major races this fall. Senior Brandon Lyons and junior Alvin Lin are other key returners who placed in the top 20 at both sectionals and the conference meet. Lin was also just five spots behind Bogos at states. Junior Will Nelson, a transfer from Cherry Hill West, ran 4:28 in the 1600 and 9:58 in the 3200 during spring track and looks like a major addition. Senior Nikhil Raman and junior Ben Sautter had strong showings at the conference and sectional races as well and return to the top seven. Sophomore Cian Sherlock broke 17 minutes in the 5K last fall as a freshman and ran 9:55 in the two-mile in the spring, while junior Milo Poerner and sophomore Justin Zhou showed promise last year and add much-needed depth.

Outlook: The Cougars were right in the mix at the major meets last season, taking second at the conference and sectional races along with sixth at states and 13th at the Meet of Champions. There’s no reason why they can’t be factors again.

Cherry Hill West
Lions

Runners to watch: Junior Rex Takakjy followed up his promising freshman season with an even better sophomore campaign, as he placed eighth at the Camden County Championships with a time of 17:51 and clocked a 17:29 at sectionals to finish 24th. He was Cherry Hill West’s top runner at both races along with the Olympic Conference Championships. Other key veterans are senior Bradley Bricker – who is looking to rebound from an injury-plagued junior season – along with senior Patrick Hughes and juniors Colin Melroy and Ayden Torres. Jake Cavella had several solid showings as a rookie and hopes to keep improving in his second season, and fellow sophomores Michael Kasich and Noah Mallow will look to capitalize on the potential they showed during track season.

Outlook: Takakjy should be a factor at the major races and his teammates will look to follow his lead to help the Lions move up in the team standings.

Clearview
Pioneers

Runners to watch: Senior Ethan Worst emerged as a premier runner last year, as he clocked in under 17 minutes to place sixth at the Tri-County Conference Showcase and eighth at the Gloucester County Championships. He went on to take 17th at sectionals in 17:07 and 29th at states in 17:06, and has high expectations for his final season. Ryne Handley and Joseph Dell’Aquila are other key seniors who both placed in the top 20 at the county meet. Handley also took 21st at sectionals and Dell’Aquila placed 31st. Junior Tyler Galtman and senior Sun Daneil had strong showings at the county and conference races, while junior Quentin Gannone and sophomore Jack Sokorai round out a solid top seven.

Outlook: It’s a new era at Clearview following the retirement of legendary coach Tom Hengel, a Gloucester County Hall of Fame member who coached more than 100 seasons at the school in various sports, starting in 1981. Daniel VanGemert inherits a solid core and the Pioneers should remain competitive after placing second in both the county and conference, fourth at sectionals and seventh at states.

Eastern
Vikings

Runners to watch: Senior Ryan Haefele has been a key runner for Eastern since he was a sophomore and will lead the pack this fall. He moved up from 43rd to 20th at the South Jersey, Group 4 sectional race, clocking a time of 16:46, and he also placed 13th at the Olympic Conference Championships with a time of 16:26. Senior Nicholas Sirdashney finished the conference course in under 18 minutes and junior Justin Fox posted an 18:12 at sectionals. Junior Aiden Mueller and sophomore Timothy Shack are also expected to contribute.

Outlook: The Vikings have most of their top runners back in the fold, including Haefele, and hope to make their presence felt at the big races.

Haddonfield
Bulldawgs

Runners to watch: All-South Jersey runner Bennett Wright, a senior, is back to lead Haddonfield after a breakout junior season. He clocked a 15:48 to place third at the Colonial Conference Championships and also placed third in South Jersey, Group 2 at sectionals with a time of 16:21. He covered the Holmdel Park course in 16:37 to take sixth at states and in 16:42 to finish 49th at the Meet of Champions. Junior Ryan Gibson will push Wright after finishing right behind him at the major races, including fourth in both the conference and sectional races and eighth at states. Juniors Ben Andrus and Luke Andresen are other outstanding returners who placed in the top 10 at the Colonial and sectional races and in the top 15 at states, and junior Brandon Stoner rounds out an excellent top five. Senior Linus Kucer is another key veteran, while juniors John Leibrandt and Michael Sinnes and senior Case Hurly add depth.

Outlook: As usual, last season was filled with plenty of highs for Haddonfield, which set a South Jersey record by winning its 245th straight dual meet and reeled off its 20th state title in a row to go with county, conference and sectional crowns and a seventh-place finish at the Meet of Champions. But the Bulldawgs also suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of legendary coach Nick Baker, who lost his battle with cancer in October. Matt Cieslik, who had been sharing coaching duties with Baker, will lead the storied program forward.

Kingsway
Dragons

Runners to watch: Ryan Duffy had quite a rookie season at Kingsway and it will be exciting to see how he follows it up as a sophomore. He was the runner-up at both the Gloucester County Championships and the Tri-County Showcase and clocked a 15:46 at sectionals to place fifth in South Jersey, Group 4. At states, he covered the Holmdel Park course in 16:19 to place 18th, and he capped things off with a 16:27 to take 35th at the Meet of Champions. Junior Michael Driscoll is another tough competitor who placed 15th at both the county and conference races before finishing 24th at sectionals. Seniors Seamus O’Malley and Anthony Messina both had strong showings at the big meets and clocked in under 18 minutes at sectionals, and sophomore Ryan Preziosi showed potential as a freshman. Senior Jaskaran Singh and junior Drew Patterson will also push for the top seven.

Outlook: New coach Nick Rothwein, a former runner in the program, inherits a talented group that should be in contention at the major races after the Dragons placed third in both the county and the conference and sixth at sectionals a year ago. Duffy could emerge with an individual title as well.

Lenape
Indians

Runners to watch: Following the graduation of Lenape’s three top runners, senior Rayyan Ahmed could be ready to lead the pack. He clocked an 18:51 at the Olympic Conference Championships and will look to continue lowering his times. Junior Owen McDonald also showed promise and should only get better as an upperclassman. Senior Cooper McDonald and a host of JV runners – including senior Lukas Corcoran, junior Dennis Simms and sophomore Jack Senechal – also hope to contribute.

Outlook: The Indians have some solid runners to replace but have good numbers in the program and expect to be competitive at the conference meet and Burlington County Open.

Moorestown
Quakers

Runners to watch: Peter Simpson’s first two seasons at Moorestown have been nothing short of impressive and the Quakers can’t wait to see what he can do as an upperclassman. Last year, he placed in the top 10 at the Burlington County Open and Olympic Conference Championships and took sixth in South Jersey, Group 3, posting a time of 16:11. He went on to take 20th at states after covering the Holmdel Park course in 16:46, and he also competed at the Meet of Champions and clocked a 17:23. Sophomore Ethan Taylor had several promising performances as a rookie and other returners to watch are senior Joseph Wichterman and junior Shaymus Derer.

Outlook: The Quakers hope to move up a few spots in the team standings at the major races, with Simpson possibly vying for an individual title.

Moorestown Friends
Foxes

Runners to watch: Moorestown Friends welcomes back No. 1 runner Isaac Linden, a senior who is looking to cap off his sensational career on a high note. He clocked a 17:42 to place fourth at states as a junior – the second season in a row he was in the top five – and returned to the Meet of Champions, where he lowered his time by a minute from the year before and posted a 17:29. Linden also took fifth at the Friends Schools League Championships for the second consecutive year. He’ll have support this fall from senior Mason Levens, who placed 18th in the league meet and 23rd at sectionals. Juniors Zev Smith, Jason Youssef and Drew Matta and sophomore Owen DeAndreas are also back and working hard to lower their times.

Outlook: Linden will be a factor at all of the major races and the Foxes are excited to see how they fare against a challenging schedule in their new conference, the Burlington County Scholastic League.

Paul VI
Eagles

Runners to watch: Paul VI said goodbye to two-time Bob Kiessling sectional champion Will Mrozinski, who also placed in the top 20 at Meet of Champions, so a new leader of the pack will have to step up. The candidates include seniors Sean Alemi and Christian Napoli, who placed third and fifth, respectively, at the Kiessling meet. Alemi also took 18th at the Olympic Conference Championships in 16:35 and 46th at states in 17:57, while Napoli finished 30th in the conference in 16:52 and 26th at states in 17:15. Other returners who  shined at the sectional race are sophomore Caden Briggs (10th), sophomore Chase Cooley (17th), senior Nicholas Salamone (18th), sophomore Chris Monaghan (19th), sophomore Holden Cranston (20th), sophomore Max Long (22nd) and junior Collin Conway (23rd). Briggs went on to break 18 minutes at states. The Eagles also have plenty of depth thanks to seniors Jameson Valvardi and Danny Foley; juniors Hayden Ciullo, Christian Crawbuck, Ben Clark, Ian Polaneczky, Joey Rotchford, Colin Mrozinski and Ben Carrozza; and sophomores Jacob McGree, Brandon Bell, Chase Dayon, Nate Pendarvis, Henry Narcisi and Tommy Boston.

Outlook: Paul VI repeated as Kiessling Invitational champions and moved up to fifth at states during a successful 2023 campaign. Mrozinski will surely be missed, but the talent and experience are there for the Eagles to remain relevant.

Seneca
Golden Eagles

Runners to watch: Junior Dominic Lera crossed the finish line first for Seneca at both the Burlington County Open and sectionals and will look to lead the way again this fall. He was consistently in the 18-minute range and should continue to make strides as an upperclassman. Senior Connor McCafferty had his best showing at the Olympic Conference Championships, where he clocked a 17:52, and is another key returner along with junior Zakariah McCoy and senior Angelo Mejia-Ranno. Senior Patrick Griffin, junior Sean George and sophomore Kyler Johnson will look to build on their potential as well.

Outlook: The Golden Eagles might not be contenders for any team crowns just yet, but it would not be surprising to see them leave their mark at the major meets.

Shawne
Renegades

Players to watch: Yanni Ekatomatis took a big leap forward as a sophomore and is poised for a strong junior season. After placing seventh at the Burlington County Open and 12th at the Olympic Conference Championships, he ran a 16:35 at sectionals to take 10th in South Jersey, Group 3. Ekatomatis went on to clock a 17:10 at Holmdel Park to finish 32nd at states. Seniors Noah Stapleton and Elias Knoll also placed in the top 15 at the county open and the top 16 at sectionals and covered the Holmdel course in under 18 minutes at states. Other key seniors are Finnegan Bracken, who ran 17:39 at sectionals for 30th, and Jack Steelman, who lowered his mile PR from 5:04 to 4:42 during a solid spring track season. Brody Dillich is yet another senior contributor who ran 1:59 in the 800 during track season and is competing in cross country for the first time after three years on the Shawnee soccer team. All six of those runners have come in under 5 minutes in the 1600, which should help raise their ceiling in the 5K this fall.

Outlook: The Renegades were runners-up at the county and sectional races, placed fourth in the conference and eighth at states as they made their presence felt at all of the major meets in 2023. They should be right in the mix again and can possibly claim a title if the chips fall their way.

Washington Township
Minutemen

Runners to watch: Hunter Bostwick may not have been at full strength during his junior year due to an illness he battled heading into the season, but even at less than 100% he was still pretty darn good. He ran 16:53 at the Tri-County Conference Showcase to place ninth and clocked a 17:25 to take 11th at the Gloucester County Championships. He will be hungry to do even better at those races and to perform better at sectionals in his final campaign. Joshua Baseshore is another senior leader who ran 17:45 at the conference race to take 26th and finished 20th in the county with a time of 18 minutes. Senior Jason Reinherz, juniors Logan Kahley and William Enever and sophomore Cooper Walsh will look to move up from JV and provide reinforcements for the varsity.

Outlook: Last year was a special one for the Minutemen, who captured division, conference and county titles and placed seventh at sectionals with a senior-laden squad. There are important spots to fill but they will aim to stay competitive with Bostwick leading the charge.
