2024 High School Girls Volleyball Preview
High School Girls Volleyball Preview of Players to Watch and the 2024-25 Season Outlook, plus the complete schedule

by Staff

Bishop Eustace
Crusaders

Players to watch: Junior outside hitter Hailey Mack has led Bishop Eustace in kills in each of the past two seasons and was rewarded with all-conference first-team honors as a sophomore. She should continue to get better as an upperclassman. The Crusaders are fortunate to welcome back several experienced setters, including junior Paige Ladik and senior Emily Glowacki, who were the top two on the team in assists and also two of the best servers. Senior Lyla Kirchner and junior Samantha Costello are other offensive contributors at opposite and seniors Angelina Anzideo and Maya Barger are veterans at middle blocker. Senior Claire Jefferis returns at libero and senior Caroline Ovecka is an experienced defensive specialist. Eustace also boasts a strong crop of up-and-coming underclassmen who will be vying for playing time.

Outlook: The Crusaders made great strides in their second season as a program, as their 16-9 overall record included a perfect 10-0 mark in the Olympic Conference National Division. They expect to be division title contenders again and hope to add some playoff success.

Camden Catholic
Fighting Irish

Players to watch:  Senior outside hitter Emily O’Donnell is coming off a strong junior season in which she was among Camden Catholic’s leaders in kills and aces. She earned all-conference second-team accolades and will lead the way for the Irish this fall. Middle blocker Maddie GavinRuple is another key senior who is a presence defensively and will be counted on for kills as well. Junior Abigail Riley emerged as the starting setter as a sophomore and did a fine job of directing the attack, and her chemistry with the hitters should only improve in her second season on the job. Junior Layla Green and sophomore Hazel Coughenour are other returners who saw varsity time, and other seniors to watch are sisters Kaitlyn and Maggie Ronkowski.

Outlook: The Irish went 12-11 overall and were right in the thick of the Olympic Conference Patriot Division race last season. The program seems to post double-digit wins every year and that expectation will remain under new head coach Julia Geonnetti, a former assistant who takes over for Alexander Kish.

Cherokee
Chiefs

Players to watch: Cherokee brings back its two leaders in kills, but both are strong all-around players who will contribute in multiple ways. Senior outside hitter Chloe Burti recorded a team-high 123 kills to go with 89 digs and 37 aces to receive all-conference second-team honors. Junior outside hitter Cassie Markel added 89 kills, 103 digs and 30 aces, giving the Chiefs a dangerous duo. They will have a new setter getting them the ball this season after the graduation of three-year starter and all-conference first-teamer Anna Hunter, so that will be a major focus point in the preseason. Senior Gab Campanaro is an experienced defensive specialist, and other important veterans are seniors Ava Antonelli, Claire Gore and Kayley Rosengard, and junior Jordan Johnson. Sophomore Ava Doherty received varsity time as a rookie and showed promise as well.

Outlook: The Chiefs bounced back from consecutive losing seasons by going 12-9 with a playoff victory in 2023. The potential is there for more success this fall.

Cherry Hill East
Cougars

Players to watch: Senior setter Aubree Mon is back to lead the offense for Cherry Hill East after doing a little bit of everything as a junior, when she finished with 200 assists, 57 kills, 73 digs and 47 aces. There will be a wide-open competition to see who she is setting, however, since five starters graduated, including two outside hitters and two middles. The defense is deep and experienced thanks to the return of senior Amanda Yu, junior Angie Choe and sophomore Leela Mon, who can all pass and serve well. A talented incoming freshman class could also make an impact right away.

Outlook: Scott Mooney – the head coach at his alma mater since 2005 – stepped down after leading the Cougars to a 20-6 record and the sectional quarterfinals in yet another successful season in his outstanding tenure. New coach Joe Feeney has a solid core in place and will look to keep the program among the tops in South Jersey.

Cherry Hill West
Lions

Players to watch:  Setter is considered to be one of the most important positions on the court, and Cherry Hill West is fortunate to bring back a good one in senior Molly Bovell, who has gained valuable varsity experience at the position since she was a sophomore. She’ll look to develop chemistry with a deep crop of hitters, including seniors Sophia O’Shaughnessy, Bridget Bryce and Jasmine Covert and juniors Tessa Kosmaczewski, Carlynn Taylor and Nora Mitwalli. Seniors Josephine Miller and Ming O’Neal and junior Salma Mitwalli will also contribute in the front row as middle blockers. Senior Alicia Arzinese is a veteran libero, while senior Theresa Caputo and junior Alaina Mendoza join Bovell at setter.

Outlook: The Lions went 8-14 last year but were competitive in most of their games and qualified for the playoffs for the second year in a row. They hope to continue pushing forward as a program under new head coach Megan Shook.

Clearview
Pioneers

Players to watch: Clearview graduated its top offensive weapon, Avery Roberts, and its starting setter, Sarah Truitt, so new leaders will have to emerge. Several talented players return up front, including senior Keira Rosner (59 kills) and junior Sienna Garrison (28 kills), both middles. They will be asked to take their game up a notch. Key returners in the back row are junior libero Alyssa Pierson, who was second on the team with 122 digs, and senior defensive specialist Daniella Ortiz, who added 70 digs. Junior Gabriela Capri showed promise as a sophomore and will look to play an expanded role along with sophomore Mallory Engle.

Outlook: The Pioneers have some important positions to fill after finishing 8-16 in 2023, but the plan is to keep improving as the season progresses and to be playing their best volleyball come playoff time.

Eastern
Vikings

Players to watch: Eastern suffered major losses to graduation but will look to rebuild around a solid group of returners who are ready to play expanded roles. Senior outside hitter Rienna Kohen is one of the most experienced players on the roster and will be asked to spark the offense, which will be directed by senior setter Ally Nichol. Senior outside hitter Emily Shin and senior middle blocker Morgan Snyder are other key veterans. Junior contributors are defensive specialist/libero Samantha Covone and middle/outside hitter Maliyah Hunter, and Frankie Nguyen leads a promising crop of sophomores that also includes Andrea De Guzman, Stella Hughes, Isabella Zapata and Sophia Zapata.

Outlook: The Vikings will look much different than the team that went 12-11 with a playoff victory in 2023, but longtime coach Tom Armour is still around and he will push the new starters to get the most out of their ability.

Gloucester Catholic
Rams

Players to watch: Senior setter Ava Godby is back to orchestrate the Gloucester Catholic offense after recording 107 assists to go with 26 digs. She will also serve as the captain and will be asked to lead a young team as the only senior. Sophomore Maddy McDonald was a varsity contributor as a rookie and is also expected to have a big year as the Rams’ second setter. Merlenis Rodriquez, Abby Schola, Angaleena Cox, Mary Morrison, Zoyniyah Mercado, Nicolette Mela and Sami Brown all put in the work during the summer to improve their skills and have shown noticeable improvement.

Outlook: The Rams won four of their last five games in 2023 and hope to ride that wave into 2024 with Godby leading the way.

Kingsway
Dragons

Players to watch: Kingsway welcomes back three all-conference players, including first-teamer Mackenzie Layton, a senior outside hitter who had 140 kills to lead the Dragons for the second year in a row. She also had team-highs with 124 digs and 57 aces and is primed for a big final season. Senior Sarah Elliott is another talented outside hitter who added 76 kills, 84 digs and 25 aces, and senior Macie Ferla, a four-year varsity player, returns at setter after recording 196 assists, 55 digs and 24 aces. Elliott and Ferla both received all-conference second-team accolades. Other key veterans are senior middle Addison Wood (41 kills, 29 blocks) and senior opposite Paige Horton (39 kills, 18 blocks).

Outlook: The Dragons’ 15-8 record last year marked their most wins in a season since 2016 and included a playoff victory. A deep and dedicated senior class is aiming for another successful campaign and should help Kingsway contend in the Tri-County Conference Royal Division under new head coach Regan Healey, a former standout player in the program.

Lenape
Indians

Players to watch: Lenape graduated an outstanding senior class that featured two of the program’s all-time great players – outside hitter Bria Morgan and setter Layla Flanigan – and is looking to develop a new core this fall. Senior middle Hope Young is the leading returner and appears to be ready for a prominent role both offensively and defensively after collecting 37 kills and 32 blocks as a junior. Isabella Avallone is another key senior who played defensive specialist last year and had 98 digs and 16 aces. Sophomore opposite/outside hitter Aleya Coppin showed promise as a rookie and will be asked to do more offensively, while Lyneekah Walters and Sydney Michener are juniors who saw varsity time and could take on expanded roles. Senior libero Caroline Maschke and junior outside hitters Isabelle Eory and Addison Fleming are expected to push for minutes as well.

Outlook: The Indians are coming off a remarkable season in which they compiled a 20-7 record and reached the sectional semifinals before falling to eventual state champion Southern. There is no replacing last year’s senior class, but they set a great example and gave this year’s team a blueprint on how to prepare and compete.

Moorestown
Quakers

Players to watch: Lindsay Bonavita emerged as Moorestown’s starting setter last year as a sophomore and collected 265 assists to go with 49 digs and 44 aces. She should only get better with a year of varsity experience under her belt, and she’ll have two talented players up front to work with in senior middle Bethany Trzeciak and senior outside hitter Rima Takla. Trzeciak led the Quakers with 104 kills and 22 blocks, while Takla added 94 kills and had team-highs of 111 digs and 51 aces. Bonavita, Trzeciak and Takla were all rewarded with all-conference first-team recognition. Senior Ava Wittenberg (33 kills, 29 aces) and juniors Renee Takla (52 digs, 12 aces) and Cindy Xu (34 digs, 12 aces) are other key veterans. Juniors Camille Cornish and Mya Roberts and sophomore Gabriella Rockell all saw varsity time and are expected to play bigger roles.

Outlook: A memorable 2023 season for the Quakers included the Olympic Conference Patriot Division championship, a trip to the sectional final and a 17-7 final record. They will set similar goals for this season.

Paul VI
Eagles

Players to watch: Maggie Carcillo made an immediate impact after transferring to Paul VI last year as a sophomore, earning all-state first-team recognition to go with Olympic Conference Player of the Year honors. The 6-foot-1 junior is a versatile player who can line up at several positions, including setter and outside hitter. She filled up the stat sheet with 127 kills, 80 digs, 248 assists and a team-high 71 aces, and it will be exciting to see what she does for an encore this fall. Senior opposite Kassadi Avent is another top returner who posted 102 kills and led the Eagles with 53 blocks to make the all-conference second team. Senior Kayle Arozio (69 kills, 41 blocks) joins Avent as a key returner at opposite and junior outside hitter Megan Evans (151 kills, 62 digs, 44 aces) is an all-around talent who should only get better as an upperclassman. Senior Danielle Mascolo (325 assists, 84 digs, 41 aces) is another outstanding setter. Other experienced returners include junior middle Kam Wertz, sophomore libero Brynn Casmay and sophomore outside hitter Amelia Reagan. It wouldn’t be surprising to see several members of the talented freshman class contribute right away either.

Outlook:  The Eagles rose to the challenge against a brutally tough schedule in 2023, going 22-4, with three of their losses coming to New Jersey state champions. They went undefeated in the Olympic Conference American Division and reached their third consecutive Non-Public A state final, dropping a 2-1 loss to rival Immaculate Heart. With a terrific returning nucleus, expectations remain high.

Seneca
Golden Eagles

Players to watch: Two all-conference players are back to lead the way for Seneca: senior libero Grace Yeager and junior setter Jordan Cutts. Yeager has been a varsity contributor since she was a freshman and paced the Golden Eagles with 158 digs to go with 24 aces last season. Cutts emerged as the conductor of the offense and led the team in both assists and aces. She developed a nice rapport with several front-row players who are back in the mix, including senior middles Rowan Breen (50 kills, 10 blocks) and Amanda Connelly (38 kills, 13 blocks), senior outside hitter Lauren Stone (25 kills) and sophomore outside hitter Emily Buddendorf (31 kills, 70 digs). Defensive specialist Shelby Yeager and middle Emily Rowan are other seniors to watch, while junior Danni Martin and sophomores Shea Naurath and Reilly Stanton are expected to contribute as well.

Outlook: The Golden Eagles faced some growing pains last year with a lot of new faces in the lineup, but the experience should pay off and it would not be surprising to see them improve on their 5-15 record.

Shawnee
Renegades

Players to watch: Shawnee returns three all-conference players, including first-teamer Ella Truitt, a senior libero who has been a varsity player since she was a freshman and can contribute in multiple ways. Senior middle Sakiyah Horsley and senior setter Melinda Valasek are other key returners who made the all-conference second team. Senior Anna Stauss was second on the team in kills and will be a big factor offensively, and other experienced players in the front row are senior opposite Norah Jedwabny and junior outside hitter Emily Staszewski. Junior Madeline McComsey and sophomore Audrey Beckwith add depth at setter and senior Amelia Franken is a veteran to watch in the back row.

Outlook: The Renegades fell just short of a winning record last year at 9-11, but finished second in Olympic Patriot and qualified for the playoffs. They have a chance to be division contenders again with several top players back in the fold.

Washington Township
Minutemaids

Players to watch: Washington Township said goodbye to a special senior class that included two all-time greats in the program, Bryn Bautista and Nina Cleary. New leaders will have to emerge, and returners who could fill that role include senior middle Ally Johns (57 kills, 20 aces) and senior defensive specialist Mia Larrea (104 digs). Sophomore outside hitter Campbell Basu flashed a ton of potential as a rookie, collecting 77 kills, and will be counted on offensively. Middle Vienna Mascieri is a junior who will be asked to step her game up, and Mia Panico is a sophomore who will look to earn varsity minutes.

Outlook: Last year’s seniors went out with another successful season, helping the Minutemaids go 19-9 with return trips to the Gloucester County final and sectional semifinals. They set the bar high for the program, which hopes to rebuild quickly and remain competitive.
