Bishop Eustace
Crusaders
Players to watch: Bishop Eustace returns a solid core led by a pair of all-conference players. Senior Anna Marquardt is a dependable veteran in the midfield who had three goals and five assists to make the all-conference second team for the second year in a row. She was joined by junior Juliana Racobaldo, a key presence on defense who can also contribute offensively, as shown by her two goals and five assists. Junior Mary DeGour is another key returner who will continue to make big plays as a back/midfielder. Sophomore forward Alexandra Braem burst onto the scene with 10 goals and seven assists – both good for second on the team – and will look to become the go-to scorer. She’ll have help offensively from senior forward Grace Donaghy (eight goals, three assists) and sophomore forward Scarlet McDermott (six goals, three assists), while seniors Aviana Scolieri and Grace Gallagher and sophomore Caroline King will also be factors in the attack. Sophomore Hailey Gaidis is another returning starter on defense and sophomore Audrey Eakins will be in the mix to replace all-conference goalie Maddie DiLemme in the cage. Other experienced returners include seniors Renee Ledyard, Lucy Cheng, Adison Reilly and Casey Hannigan and junior Lily Marengo. Sophomores hoping to play bigger roles are Morgan Bieberbach, Regan Bieberbach, Addyson Faust, Mary Kate McCormick, Julia Spiegel and Estella Zuidema.
Outlook: The Crusaders bounced back from a rare losing season by going 12-8-1 and reaching their third sectional final in four years before falling to Camden Catholic 3-0. They expect to be in contention once again this fall.
Camden Catholic
Fighting Irish
Players to watch: Camden Catholic is thrilled to welcome back a pair of all-state first-team players: senior midfielder Bella Moore and sophomore forward Sophia Stazi. Moore set career highs with 10 goals and 14 assists while continuing to play shut-down defense at the other end of the field to repeat as an all-South Jersey first-team and all-conference first-team honoree. She is committed to the University of Virginia. Stazi put together a phenomenal rookie season, as she led the Irish with 33 goals and added 11 assists to join Moore on the all-South Jersey and all-conference first teams. She was also named Olympic Conference Player of the Year. Junior Lauren Iaccio is another key returner in the midfield who had four goals and a team-high 20 assists, and senior Madison Logan, a Temple commit, is also a top contributor at the forward position. Both of them made the all-conference second team. Senior Brooke Mitchell (six goals) and sophomore Natalie Ott (four goals, two assists) are other dangerous forwards, while junior Alixandra Linaris and sophomores Casey Capriotti, Katherine Gillern and Erica Houlihan are players to watch in the midfield. Junior Gianna Piperato and senior Dani Brown are experienced defenders and junior Madelyn LaForm will look to take over as the starting goalie. Junior Savannah Freeland, a transfer from Lenape, is a newcomer expected to be a major contributor. She scored a team-high 19 goals for the Indians. Senior Alahna Shelton and junior Emily Schollins, Sienna Mendez and Teresa Mignatti will be competing to fill spots vacated by last year’s seniors.
Outlook: Last year was another remarkable one for the Irish, who compiled an 18-2-1 record and repeated as Non-Public state champions on their way to the No. 6 ranking in the country. They will continue to set the bar high in 2024, although the schedule is tougher with the addition of Notre Dame Academy (Pa.), the No. 1 team in the country, along with several other top programs from across the state and the region.
Cherokee
Chiefs
Players to watch: Erin O’Brien has emerged as one of the area’s top goalies in her first two years at Cherokee and is primed for a big junior season. She posted 173 saves, allowed just 1.5 goals per game and recorded two shutouts as a sophomore to make the all-conference team for the second year in a row, moving up from the second team to the first team. The Chiefs also welcome back their leading scorer, senior Victoria Geissler, a West Chester commit who transitioned from defense to the midfield and responded with seven goals and an assist to make the all-conference second team. Junior midfielder Allie Beckendorf had six goals and an assist to join Geissler on the all-conference second team, and other returning playmakers are senior forward Olivia Nicolucci (six goals, six assists) and junior forward Allie Mazur (one goal, three assists).
Outlook: Cherokee’s 7-9-1 record last fall included eight one-goal losses, a first-round playoff defeat to Washington Township among them. With several important pieces of the roster returning, the Chief should remain competitive and hope to fare better in the close games.
Cherry Hill East
Cougars
Players to watch: Trying to stop the talented playmakers in the Olympic Conference is no easy task, but Madison Krieger seized the starting goalie job for Cherry Hill East last year as a junior and was certainly up for the challenge. She made 173 saves to earn all-conference second-team honors. Krieger returns to the cage and will have key defenders in front of her like junior Sarai Morrison, an all-conference second-teamer, and senior Maggie Pierlott, a four-year starter. Senior Lillie Pavlow is another experienced defender who can step up and aid the offense on corners. Junior Kylie Bregman returns at center mid and will help to generate scoring chances for herself and her teammates, while seniors Rylie Morris and Alana Rellosa and junior Adia Hall will also contribute to the attack. Juniors Peyton Frankovich and Rachel Rosenberg and sophomore Audrey Radetich are expected to see time at multiple positions.
Outlook: As always, a difficult schedule awaits the Cougars, but they are counting on their defense to keep them in games and are hoping to build on last year’s 3-14 record.
Cherry Hill West
Lions
Players to watch: Tatum Woods, a difference-maker since her freshman year, is back for one final season at Cherry Hill West before moving on to play Division I lacrosse at the University of Maryland. The senior forward/midfielder has made the all-conference first team in each of her first three seasons and is approaching 50 career goals after recording 11 goals and five assists as a junior. Two other talented playmakers to watch are senior forward Karine Johnson, who had 12 goals and six assists to lead West in both categories, and senior midfielder Addison Petti, who added nine goals and four assists to repeat as an all-conference second-teamer. There are several other proven finishers as well, including junior forwards Lillie Legato (eight goals, two assists) and Sam Bruno (two goals, four assists) and senior forwards Ava Ergood (four goals, two assists) and Mia Rider (two goals, one assist). Senior back Ailani Ubarry, a three-sport standout, is back to anchor the defense after receiving all-conference second-team accolades for the second year in a row. Seniors Olivia Versace, Charlie Pike and Sydney Clark, junior Kylie Ruggieri and sophomore Sophia Ergood are also known for their presence at the defensive end of the field, but the Lions will have to find a replacement for all-conference goalie Rebecca Armstrong, who graduated.
Outlook: Cherry Hill West made a memorable playoff run in South Jersey, Group 3 as the 10 seed, knocking off seventh-seeded Ocean City and second-seeded Allentown before dropping a close 1-0 game to eventual state champion Clearview in the sectional semifinals to finish with an 11-9-1 record. With so many important pieces returning, the Lions will look to ride that momentum into 2024.
Clearview
Pioneers
Players to watch: Clearview brings back almost the entire roster from its 2023 state championship squad, so hopes are undoubtedly high in Mullica Hill. It all starts with a pair of all-South Jersey first-team selections: junior center midfielder Ella Gandy and senior forward Alaina Lomonaco. Gandy had 13 goals and led the Pioneers with 12 assists, including the most important one of the season, which set up Lomonaco for the game-winning goal in double overtime in the state final. Gandy was also named to the all-state third team and all-conference first team. Lomonaco, a Towson commit, moved from outside midfielder to forward and led Clearview with 15 goals to go with eight assists as she earned all-conference first-team accolades. Their chemistry will continue to pay dividends this fall, but they are far from alone among offensive playmakers. Junior forward Marley Dutch (nine goals, nine assists) and her sister, senior midfielder Mackenzie Dutch (five goals, three assists), will also be major factors in the attack, while senior midfielder Callie Warner will also contribute. Junior Addison McConnell can also put the ball in the cage or generate chances for her teammates—she had nine goals and six assists—but it was her presence on the back line that earned her all-state third-team honors. Junior Olivia Cherian is another returning starter on defense and junior Marissa Buck is back at goalie after recording 200 saves. Senior Alexa Hogan, juniors Charlotte Misner and Kaylee Houpt, and sophomores Mariah Barnes, Nina Graff and Emily Stock also hope to make an impact, and newcomers to watch are promising freshmen Maddie Reeves, Abby Vaites and Emily Baron.
Outlook: After falling in overtime in the 2022 state final, Clearview flipped the script in 2023 to cap an amazing 17-6 season with the Group 3 crown. Count on the Pioneers being in contention once again this season.
Eastern
Vikings
Players to watch: A solid returning core led by senior midfielder Brynn Somers is back to lead Eastern. Somers tied for the team lead with 10 goals and led the way with 14 assists to earn all-conference first-team recognition as a junior. She is primed for a big final season before continuing her career at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. Sophomore Tessa Connor is another key returner in the midfield who had seven goals and two assists as a rookie to make the all-conference second team. Senior forward Grace Carnival (six goals, four assists) and junior forward Christiane Johnson (four goals) will also be counted on offensively, along with seniors Valentina Barone and Juliana Beiraro and sophomore Lauren Stanz. Junior Chloe Yoder and senior Melany Mosier are the anchors of the defense: Yoder collected six assists and made the all-conference first team, while Mosier made the all-conference second team. Senior Gaby Hoffmaster returns for her third year as the starting goalie after making 149 saves as a junior and repeating as an all-conference second-teamer. The veteran roster also includes juniors Julianna Sabec, Alyssa Galiano and Gisele Spadaro.
Outlook: The Vikings had a strong finish to the 2023 campaign, as they won five straight games down the stretch before a close loss to Southern in the sectional quarterfinals gave them a 9-7-2 final record. The pieces are in place for another successful season.
Gloucester Catholic
Rams
Players to watch: Senior midfielders Sienna Giannotti and Kiley Niederman were both all-conference honorees a year ago and will look to spark Gloucester Catholic. Giannotti scored five goals and assisted on four others, while Niederman chipped in three goals and an assist. Senior midfielder Mackenzie Biondi and junior forward Julia Calzonetti are other key veterans offensively. At the other end of the field, senior Morgan McManus is back for her third season as the starter in the cage after recording 57 saves as a junior. Juniors Kate Bonawitz and Allison Carney and sophomore Madelynn McGinn will look to support her from the back line. Kelsey Bonawitz, a sophomore, will also push for playing time, mainly at forward.
Outlook: The Rams’ 6-9 season in 2023 ended with a close loss to Holy Spirit in the first round of the playoffs. They hope to contend for a winning record under new head coach Mandy Phillips, who is looking forward to establishing an amazing culture.
Haddonfield
Bulldawgs
Players to watch: Haddonfield will once again follow the lead of sensational senior forward Olivia Marthins, who exploded for a state-leading 50 goals last year to go with six assists. The Penn State commit made the all-conference and all-South Jersey first teams and the all-state second team, and is approaching 100 career goals heading into her final season. The Bulldawgs’ high-powered attack is not a one-person show, however: Senior forwards Ava Poliafico (12 goals, six assists) and Chloe Williams (12 goals, three assists) are other dangerous playmakers that opposing defenses must be aware of. Poliafico will continue her career at Colgate. Senior Margo Rhoads and junior Avery McMaster will also look to contribute offensively, while seniors Rihana Pollard (a Wagner recruit) and Anna Wixted are returners in the midfield. Senior Molly Minor is an experienced defender in front of senior goalie Ava Fasolo, a Wingate University commit. Gigi Eden and Kate Wordington White are other seniors to keep an eye on, and sophomores who showed promise as rookies are Alex Corbett, Reese Corbett and Grace Porter.
Outlook: The Bulldawgs lived up to their program’s lofty standards once again last season, as they compiled a 16-5-1 record and played for a sectional title for the eighth time in nine years before dropping a 3-2 heartbreaker to Point Pleasant Borough. With Marthins leading the way, they should be back in familiar territory this fall.
Kingsway
Dragons
Players to watch: Kingsway may have said goodbye to three all-state first-team players – including New Jersey Player of the Year Sabrina McGroarty – but there is still plenty of talent remaining from a squad that finished fourth in the country. It starts with the senior class, which includes three Division I college commits: Erin Callahan, Grace Hunter and Karlie Mertz. Callahan, the backbone of the Dragons’ stingy defense and a first-team member of the all-state, all-South Jersey and all-conference teams, is headed to the University of Maryland. Hunter, a forward/midfielder who will continue her career at Michigan, had 16 goals and 16 assists as a junior to make the all-conference and all-South Jersey first teams along with the all-state second team. Mertz, a forward, scored 18 goals on her way to all-conference second-team honors and will play collegiately at St. Joseph’s. Junior forward Sophie Brown is yet another Division I recruit who recently committed to James Madison. She led Kingsway with 28 goals and added eight assists to make the all-state second team as a sophomore. Junior Isabella Sanchez (10 goals, four assists) and senior Abby Klimek (four goals, one assist) are other veteran forwards expected to be big contributors offensively, and sophomore Reese Samra flashed potential as a rookie as well. Senior Ava DiBonaventura, a Stevenson University commit, is a key returner in the midfield, and players to watch on defense are senior Amelia Morris and sophomores Maya Kuminka and Gabriella Pinto. A new starting goalie will have to emerge since all-state first-teamer Soren Kipphut graduated a year early and is now at the University of Virginia.
Outlook: The Dragons not only repeated as Group 4 state champions last year, but they finished atop the final state poll to go with their national ranking after going undefeated against New Jersey competition and compiling a 20-2 overall record. There are major spots to fill, particularly on defense, but the program will look to extend its recent dominance behind a talented nucleus.
Lenape
Indians
Players to watch: Lenape suffered big losses with the transfer of leading scorer Savannah Freeland and a season-ending injury to junior goalie Maddie Guerry. Leading the returners are key seniors Xan Wallenhurst at forward and Brooke Hughes in the midfield, along with junior Maggie Neilson, an experienced defender. Juniors Scarlett Beeler and Shreeya Soma will also look to play expanded roles.
Outlook: The Indians posted a 10-7 record, including a playoff victory, in their 16th and final season under head coach Sarah Scannell, who won two sectional titles and more than 110 games during her tenure. Megan Roeloffs, who played at Montclair State and was the head coach at West Windsor-Plainsboro North the past two years, has a big senior class to replace but is optimistic about setting a strong foundation for the future thanks to her players’ relentless work ethic.
Moorestown
Quakers
Players to watch: It’s a new era at Moorestown following the departure of longtime coach Ali Collins, not to mention the graduation of leading scorer Sydney Kowalczyk. Fortunately, new coach Christy Traitz has a solid core to build around, starting with senior goalie Soph Mazza, who is entering her third season as the starter. She made 130 saves as a junior and received all-conference first-team accolades. Forward/midfielder Adelae Chierici is another key senior who had seven goals and six assists to make the all-conference second team. A Georgetown commit, she will look to spark the offense along with senior midfielder Marley Procopio, who scored five goals and dished out a team-high 11 assists. Senior forwards Anna LeGrazie and Betty Weber and junior forwards Meredith Ortiz and Emma Brown will also contribute offensively. Sophia Sullivan is a versatile junior who can shine in the midfield or on defense, while seniors Sophie LeGrazie and Clare Martin, juniors Tori Misselhorn and Lily Marta and sophomore Callie Macaluso add depth at those positions as well. Senior Marlee McCubbin-Larman and junior goalie Ashley Carey are other experienced returners, and Marykate Crow is another member of the promising sophomore class.
Outlook: The Quakers are coming off another successful season in which they went 12-6-1 and dropped a close game to eventual state champion Clearview in the sectional quarterfinals. It marked the end of the line for Collins, who stepped down to spend more time with her family after leading Moorestown to a 266-77-8 record, nine sectional titles and two state championships in her 17 years. Traitz, a former head coach at Delran, is excited to continue the program’s winning tradition.
Moorestown Friends
Foxes
Players to watch: Senior goalie Maddie Calixto has been a fixture in the cage since her sophomore year and is primed for a big final season at Moorestown Friends. She stopped 214 shots as a junior and was rewarded with all-league first-team honors. Senior Logan Shields leads the defense in front of Calixto, with junior Sarah Capparelli and sophomore Jade Montenegro also contributing to the back line. Several playmakers return on offense, including junior forward Abby Fog, who was second on the team with six goals. Seniors Maya DeAndrea and Azaria Coleman-Stokes, junior Anjali Shah and sophomore Olivia Martin are also key members of the attack and midfield.
Outlook: The Foxes, who went 7-11 and lost in the first round of the playoffs last year, have the talent and experience to make a smooth transition from the Friends Schools League to the Burlington County Scholastic League.
Paul VI
Eagles
Players to watch: After graduating its two leading scorers, Paul VI will be looking for a new offensive standout to emerge, and sophomore midfielder Celeste Conklin is among the candidates. She scored five goals during a promising rookie season and will try to take her game up another level. Senior midfielder Carlyn McKendrick is another returning playmaker who had three goals and three assists and is committed to Ursinus. Seniors Mackenzie Clark, Isabella Shannon, Amelia Niven, Bailee Hocker and Emily Schwarzwalder and junior Ava Rapattoni are offensive contributors as well. Sophomores Ainsley McKendrick and Jillian Schaal, juniors Rina Manfredo and Ava Diaz and senior Morgan Chambers are experienced defenders, and sophomore Madeline Lick is in the mix to take over as the starting goalie.
Outlook: The Eagles have some important players to replace, particularly at forward and in the cage, but if their young talent develops, they have a chance to improve on last year’s 5-14 record.
Seneca
Golden Eagles
Players to watch: Seneca welcomes back two all-conference first-teamers, one at each end of the field, and both are committed to college programs. Senior forward Ava Thomas, who led the Golden Eagles with 17 goals and added six assists, also made the all-South Jersey second team and will continue her career at Rowan. Senior back Maddie Stillwell, who chipped in two goals and four assists while anchoring the defense, is headed to Ursinus. Joining Thomas as offensive sparks are senior midfielder Josephine Perrin, who had seven goals and seven assists, and sophomore forward Fiona Sokorai, who burst onto the scene with 16 goals and eight assists as a rookie to make the all-conference second team. Junior Izzy Ounjian returns in the midfield and junior Olivia Montgomery is a strong defender who received all-conference second-team honors. Emily Rock, a junior, will push for the starting goalie job, and other returners hoping for bigger roles include juniors Chloe Carter and Rylee Hickman and a host of sophomores.
Outlook: Seneca’s 16-3 season included wins over Clearview, Moorestown and Eastern and close losses to state champion Camden Catholic, state finalist Point Pleasant Borough and sectional finalist Bishop Eustace. They have the potential to once again be among the top teams in South Jersey.
Shawnee
Renegades
Players to watch: A breakout junior season helped midfielder Abby Davidson earn an offer from the University of Connecticut, but she still has one year to go at Shawnee before moving on to her college career. Davidson raised her game up a notch last fall, as she led the Renegades with both 23 goals and 16 assists to earn all-state third-team accolades to go with first-team recognition in South Jersey and the conference. She’ll have help offensively from senior forwards Leah Bruchansky (eight goals, three assists) and Brooke Vasta (six goals, six assists), junior forwards Shayla Moore (three goals, one assist) and Angie Ricci (one goal, one assist), and sophomore forward Ava Agosto (three goals, two assists). Senior back Kasey Abbott has made the all-conference first team each of the past two seasons and leads the defense, while senior Brenna Fitzpatrick returns as the starting goalie. Junior Benna Clark adds depth in the cage and other experienced defenders are senior Elena Bonfrisco and junior Talia Nichols. Seniors Elizabeth Cutbush and Grave Gravenstine and junior Charlotte Coskery are players to watch in the midfield.
Outlook: Shawnee’s memorable 16-4 season included a share of the division title and a berth in the sectional final, and its four losses came by a combined six goals. The Renegades are eager to follow it up with another successful campaign and to vie for a South Jersey championship.
Washington Township
Minutemaids
Players to watch: Washington Township brings back a talented crop of veterans that includes four all-conference players and is led by senior midfielder Ryli Zee. She scored five goals and paced the Minutemaids with 12 assists to earn all-South Jersey second-team and all-conference first-team honors for the second year in a row. Zee, a Kent State commit, has been a starter since her freshman year and was named team MVP each of the past two seasons. The top two goal scorers are also back: senior midfielder Emma-Rose Phillips, a Sacred Heart commit, had 14 goals and 10 assists, and senior forward Karley DuCoin was right behind her with 13 goals and seven assists. They both received all-conference second-team recognition. The fourth all-conference player is second-teamer Simone Johnson, a senior who directs the defense in front of senior goalie Leah Roe (167 saves). Junior Brooke Van Duyne will look to join them in the backfield. Junior Hannah Saleh scored three goals as a sophomore and freshman Taylor Zee will be looking to join her in the midfield, while seniors Averie Lynch and Ava Ciaccia add depth at forward. Washington Township will also look for offensive contributions from other experienced midfielders seniors Cecelia LaGreca and Kiley McElroy. Defenders to keep an eye on are juniors Gabrielle DaSilva and Lilliana Kuterbach and sophomores Mackenzi Cerchiaro, Emma Sutherland and Mariah Villeda. Sophomores Julianna Rusi and Gianna Blaylock will look to earn time in the cage.
Outlook: The Minutemaids went 13-8 and gave Kingsway, the top-ranked team in the state, a battle in the sectional semifinals before falling 3-0. This year’s senior class has succeeded in putting the program back on the map and it will be exciting to see how they close out their careers under new head coach Lauren Mazziotto, a former all-state player at Washington Township who has coaching experience at the Division I level and on the high school level in North Carolina.
