Bishop Eustace
Crusaders
Runners to watch: A solid senior class graduated, including No. 1 runner Anya Kazemi, who finished second at states and went on to compete at the Meet of Champions. Senior Donna Presenza will look to move into her place at the front of the pack after taking 20th at the Bob Kiessling sectional meet with a time of 22:43 and 25th at states in 23:24. She’ll be pushed by junior Sophia Kaloustian, who has made steady progress throughout her first two seasons in the program. The Crusaders hope to fill out the roster around them with varsity newcomers.
Outlook: Bishop Eustace usually has at least one or two runners who stand out at the championship meets, and that shouldn’t change this season, but whether they can contend for team titles will come down to building some depth.
Camden Catholic
Fighting Irish
Runners to watch: Camden Catholic is happy to welcome back its No. 1 runner from the past two years, senior Nilaa Ponnappan. She was the Camden County champion as a junior and placed second at the South Jersey Open with a school-record time of 19:13. She also took sixth at the Olympic Conference Championships, clocked a time of 19:29 to place fifth at the Bob Kiessling sectional meet and went on to finish 16th at states before running at the Meet of Champions. Ponnappan is looking forward to a big final season in green and white. Junior Brynn Deiwert is another key veteran whose highlights included an eighth-place finish at the county meet and a 22nd at sectionals. She was an all-conference second-team selection. Sophomores Sophia Tilelli and Grace Ramirez will look to build on the potential they showed as freshmen and Natalie Gibison is another sophomore hoping to have an impact.
Outlook: Camden Catholic’s best team finish was second place at the county meet, and the Irish also took third at sectionals. With Ponnappan leading the pack, they will leave their mark on the championship races once again.
Cherokee
Chiefs
Runners to watch: Megan Niglio has been a big contributor to some outstanding teams at Cherokee and has been around plenty of great runners, including her older sister Kelsey. Now it’s her turn to lead the way as a senior, and she is certainly up for the challenge. Last fall, she seemed to get better as the season went on, as she ran a 19:30 at states to place eighth in Group 4 and followed up with a 19:17 at the Meet of Champions to take 22nd. She was also in the top 10 at sectionals (ninth), the Burlington County Open (third) and the Olympic Conference Championships (fifth). It would not be surprising to see Niglio contend for an individual title or two this season. Grace Wojciechowski is another key senior who placed in the top 10 at the county, conference and sectional meets, hovering right around 20 minutes each time. Junior Maya Kumar and sophomore Gabrielle Urban had solid performances at the county and conference races and should become even bigger factors. Seniors Veronica Ashcroft and Selen Arkan and sophomore Alexa Butler hope to move up from JV and make an impact as well.
Outlook: The Chiefs reclaimed their team titles at the county, conference and sectional races in 2023 after missing out the year before, and they also placed fourth at states and ninth at the Meet of Champions in a successful season. They have some spots to fill but will continue to set the bar high.
Cherry Hill East
Cougars
Runners to watch: Cate Feudtner took over as Cherry Hill East’s No. 1 runner and had a terrific junior season. After placing eighth at the Olympic Conference Championships, she ran a 19:32 at sectionals to place sixth in South Jersey, Group 4, and went on to take 33rd at states before capping the year at the Meet of Champions. She is primed for a big senior season and will have company at the front of the pack from junior Shaela Conway, who was the first Cherry Hill East runner to cross the finish line at states in 30th place. She also took ninth at the conference meet, 11th at sectionals and ran at the MOC. The rest of the Cougars’ varsity lineup also returns, including sophomore Ryleigh Budsock and senior Tiffany Guidarelli, who both placed in the top 20 at sectionals, and juniors Ella Davidson and Keira Conway, who finished in the top 20 at the conference meet. Other returners expected to contribute are junior Sophia Szklarski and sophomore Katherine Grottini.
Outlook: Last season was another memorable one for Cherry Hill East, which was in the mix at the major races and finished third in the conference, second at sectionals and seventh at states. With a ton of talent and experience, they look like contenders this fall.
Cherry Hill West
Lions
Runners to watch: The lone varsity returner for Cherry Hill West is senior Krystal Patel, who was showing improvement during her first cross country season before suffering an injury and ending the year on the sidelines. She rebounded to have strong seasons in winter and spring track, however, and is expected to be the leader of the team. Junior Olivia Serrano, who played soccer in her first two years at West, is a key addition to the roster. She ran distance in winter and spring track and has loads of potential in cross country. New head coach Maggie Strimel is hoping to build the rest of the team with first-time runners and freshmen and to show them that they can have fun and succeed in the sport by putting in time and effort.
Outlook: Strimel is no stranger to the program, as she previously guided the cross country team before stepping away in 2019 and has been an assistant in winter and spring track for the past two seasons. The Lions are in good shape moving forward with her at the helm.
Clearview
Pioneers
Runners to watch: Clearview’s top two runners from last year received their diplomas, but there is plenty of potential remaining on the roster. Sophomore Claudia Webb did not waste any time in making an impact during her rookie season, which included top-20 performances at the Gloucester County Championships and Tri-County Conference Showcase. She went on to a run 21:47 at sectionals to place 28th in South Jersey, Group 3, followed by her first trip to states. Senior Lilla Porter is another top returner who had her best race at the conference meet, where she clocked a 21:02 for 11th place. She also took 21st in the county, 44th at sectionals and ran 21:49 at states. Anna Hagerman (20th in the county, 23rd in the conference) and Jacqueline Bonnenberg (37th in the county) are also seniors to watch. Sophomores Julianne Roes, Rhea Remaly and Leah Hagerman all showed promise as rookies and are expected to contribute as well.
Outlook: In their final season under legendary coach Tom Hengel, the Pioneers were runners-up at the county and conference races, placed fourth at sectionals and 11th at states. New coach Daniel VanGemert aims to keep the program humming along.
Eastern
Vikings
Runners to watch: Theresa Albertson burst onto the scene and made her presence felt right away as a freshman, and it will be exciting to see how she follows up her rookie season this fall. She was Eastern’s top finisher at the major meets and the team’s lone qualifier for states, where she finished 35th with a time of 20:26. She took seventh at both the Olympic Conference Championships in 19:29 and sectionals in 19:38. There is also potential in the runners behind Albertson, who all posted similar times and hope to keep making strides. That group includes seniors Brianna Panchal and Addison Foster and junior Evolet Espinosa. Newcomers hoping to add depth are seniors Annelise Shack and Sarah Haefele and sophomores Jordyn Waterman and Anika Sandilya.
Outlook: With Albertson seeking to move into contention at the big races, the Vikings should also see their results in the team standings improve.
Haddonfield
Bulldawgs
Runners to watch: There was no sophomore slump whatsoever last year for Riley Austin, who followed up her phenomenal freshman campaign with an even better second season. She claimed the South Jersey, Group 2 crown with a time of 18:47, then clocked a 19:20 at states to finish third. Austin, who was also the Colonial Conference runner-up, went on to place 31st at the Meet of Champions in 19:39. She leads a talented returning core that includes three other runners who placed in the top 20 at sectionals: senior Dylan Melcher (fifth), sophomore Harper Benjamin (eighth) and senior Katherine Asher (13th). All three also placed in the top 10 of the conference race and the top 40 at states. Madison Kelsey is another super sophomore who missed some big races as a freshman but took fifth in the conference with a time of 19:23 and posted a 21:32 at the MOC, third-best among returners behind Austin and Melcher. Molly Mills, Devon Gervasi, Caroline Barker and Tylin Regan are varsity newcomers round out a deep roster and could push for the top seven as the season progresses.
Outlook: The Bulldawgs bring streaks of 14 straight sectional titles and three consecutive state crowns into this season, and they were also the top South Jersey team at the MOC last year in fifth place. The standards are always high with this program and that will be the case again in 2024.
Kingsway
Dragons
Runners to watch: Two runners who placed in the top 20 at the Gloucester County Championships are back to lead Kingsway: senior Rachel Wiley (11th) and sophomore Aubrey Bishop (17th). Bishop was also the Dragons’ top finisher at sectionals, as she clocked a 20:38 to place 17th in South Jersey, Group 4. Wiley took 30th at sectionals and was first on the team at the Tri-County Conference Showcase in 14th overall. Junior Talia Allen and senior Alaina Zabielski are other strong competitors and Ava Buchanan is a sophomore who showed promise as a rookie.
Outlook: Kingsway is consistently a top-five team at the county and conference meets – the Dragons placed third and fifth, respectively, last year – and more of the same can be expected this fall.
Lenape
Indians
Runners to watch: Sophomore Audrey McCorkle, who was a freshman standout in track last winter and spring, enters her first season of cross country with high hopes and is expected to lead the way for Lenape. Another key runner is junior Katie Gonzalez, who has been a reliable competitor each of her first two seasons and should really come into her own as an upperclassman. Her best performance last year was at the Olympic Conference Championships, where she clocked a 23:36. Vivian Jony is another junior leader who was right behind Gonzalez at sectionals for the second-best finish on the team among returners. The sophomore class is also full of potential: Brenna Sheeron, Bevin Riegert and Gwendolyn Teske all contributed as rookies and will look to reach another level in their second season.
Outlook: The Indians have a solid cast of returners who are putting in the work to improve, and the results should speak for themselves in the coming months.
Moorestown
Quakers
Runners to watch: Moorestown is excited to welcome back junior Lilliana Stack Maya, who was injured as a sophomore but is back to full health and has the potential to lead the pack this fall. Noelia Reyes is another standout who saw her times dip to the 20-21-minute range as a junior, and she hopes to go even lower as a senior. She was Moorestown’s top finisher at most of the major races and placed eighth at the Burlington County Open, 15th at the Olympic Conference Championships and 16th at sectionals. The Quakers have two more key seniors in Gabrielle DeJoseph and Jane Goettle. DeJoseph was not far behind Reyes at the big races, as she took ninth in the county, 23rd in the conference and 23rd at sectionals. Goettle was hurt but was posting 5K times in the low 21s and high 20s before her injury. Sophia DiFiore had some strong showings as a rookie, including a time of 21:31 for 22nd place at sectionals, and could push for the front of the pack as well. Senior Sarah Brown placed in the top 20 at the county meet and the top 40 at sectionals and rounds out a solid top six.
Outlook: The Quakers once again were in the mix at the major meets in 2023, as they took second in the county, fourth in the conference and third at sectionals before finishing 12th at states. A talented nucleus should help them stay competitive this season.
Moorestown Friends
Foxes
Runners to watch: After having just two runners on last year’s roster – who both graduated – the numbers have grown heading into the upcoming season. Kelly Li and Shali Trivedi are sophomores who will look to set the pace for Moorestown Friends. Freshmen Julia Messina, E’Lon Rodwell-Simon and Yuri Wallace are also on board and hoping to have an impact right away as rookies.
Outlook: The Foxes are excited to have a full team once again, and with a young core there is great potential for improvement over the course of this season and in the next few years.
Paul VI
Eagles
Runners to watch: Two-time sectional champion Shaelyn McNally graduated, but fortunately Paul VI has two juniors who are ready to step in and take over as the leaders of the team. Giovanna Mantuano ran 19:07 at the Olympic Conference Championships and 19:01 at the Bob Kiessling sectional race, placing third at both, and she went on to take 19th at states before competing at the Meet of Champions. Macy Huber was not far behind her, taking 17th in the conference, sixth at sectionals and 20th at states. They should continue to bring out the best in each other this fall. The sophomore class is also talented and includes three runners who placed in the top 20 at sectionals: Grace Gutowski (11th), Kara Salamone (15th) and Lucy Crothers (18th). Senior Verina Belmonte took 17th at sectionals and is another key returner, while senior Emily Kurichi and juniors Molly Miller and Casey Rupertus will also push to be in the top seven. A very strong freshman turnout will add depth to an already impressive lineup.
Outlook: The Eagles’ accomplishments in 2023 included the team title at the Kiessling sectional meet, a runner-up finish in the conference and a third at states. There is no replacing McNally, but they should remain in contention with Mantuano and Huber leading the pack.
Seneca
Golden Eagles
Runners to watch: Abigail Connolly emerged as a major contributor during her rookie season and has high hopes for her sophomore campaign. She ran 21:34 to take 33rd at the Olympic Conference Championships and took 23rd at sectionals with a time of 23:44. Juniors Jacey Caracci, Catherine Hodges and Simona DelCollo are other key returners who will look to keep making strides as upperclassmen. A number of JV runners will round out the lineup, including senior Hunter Kirkbride and juniors Lily Hoey, Aiyana Gonzalez and Cali Rose.
Outlook: The Golden Eagles set a good foundation in 2023 and have a chance to keep building on their potential this season.
Shawnee
Renegades
Runners to watch: Paige Cline has been at the front of the pack for Shawnee since she was a sophomore and is primed for a big senior season. She took a significant leap as a junior, finishing in the top 10 at the Burlington County Open (fourth) and sectionals (ninth) while clocking a 19:59 for 11th place at the Olympic Conference Championships. She will strive to qualify for states once again and cut down on the time of 21:08 she posted last year at Holmdel Park. Senior Ava Nix consistently recorded times in the low 20s and placed 20th in the county and 29th at sectionals, and Sabrina Damiani is another senior leader who will be counted on at the big races. Danica DiPerna and Elizabeth Brower are sophomores looking to build on their solid rookie campaigns and junior Melissa Gomez will also push to be in the top seven.
Outlook: The Renegades had top-five showings at the county, conference and sectional meets in 2023, and they intend on staying up front this fall as Cline contends for individual accolades.
Washington Township
Minutemaids
Runners to watch: Washington Township is fortunate to bring back many of its standout competitors from last season, including senior No. 1 Kaylee Russen. She placed in the top 10 at both the Gloucester County Championships (seventh) and the Tri-County Conference Showcase (eighth) for the second year in a row and covered the course at DREAM Park in 20:10 to finish 13th at sectionals. She was also the Minutemaids’ lone state qualifier. Rachael Wilson is another talented senior who paced the team with a sixth-place finish in the conference race to go with a ninth at the county meet and a 38th at sectionals. Juniors Julia Blanchard, Aryanna Rusi and Gabriella Myers and sophomore Dakota Milou round out a strong returning core.
Outlook: Russen and Wilson should make their presence felt at the big races, and with the depth behind them that means the Minutemaids have a good chance at finishing near the top of the team standings.
