Bishop Eustace
Crusaders
Players to watch: All three starting singles players graduated, but Bishop Eustace does return a core of talented youngsters who gained varsity experience, so it will be interesting to see how the lineup shakes out. Sophomores Angelina Balsamo and Claudia Coleman were first doubles partners as rookies and also filled in at singles on occasion. They could be in line to move into singles on a regular basis this fall. Junior Ava Montuori and sophomore Isabel Palaganas are other returning starters who competed mostly at second doubles. They should contend for spots at either doubles or singles. Junior Sophia Alicea also has varsity experience, and several underclassmen will push for spots as well.
Outlook: The Crusaders have been in rebuilding mode lately, but the future looks brighter with plenty of numbers in the program and a determination to improve across the board.
Cherokee
Chiefs
Players to watch: It’s a new day at Cherokee following the graduation of four-year first singles Shruti Mannan, who became the first female player in school history to win the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships last season. There is no way to replace a player of that caliber, but the Chiefs do bring back their other two singles starters, juniors Nidhi Mandrekar and Camryn Nelson, and they would both love to move into the top spot. Senior Fariha Khan has three years of varsity experience, including first doubles last season, and will also be called upon to play an important role in the lineup. Sophomore Joyce Li will look to build on her promising rookie season, in which she mostly played second doubles and also got her feet wet in singles action. Junior Piya Dattani went 2-1 in limited varsity doubles experience and hopes to earn a starting job as well.
Outlook: Mannan was basically an automatic point in team matches last year, when Cherokee reached the sectional quarterfinals and finished with a 9-10 record. It will certainly be an adjustment without her, but the Chiefs hope to remain competitive.
Cherry Hill East
Cougars
Players to watch: Junior Michelle Michalowski has been a singles starter since she was a freshman and could be ready for the top spot after the graduation of four-year No. 1 Sophia Liu. Michalowski competed at second singles as a sophomore and went 9-5 in team matches to go with a trip to the semifinals of the Camden County Tournament. Sophomore Sophia Wei is another returning singles player who showed potential as a rookie. She compiled an 8-5 record at third singles. Seniors Maya Pater and Ariel Ivler shined in their first season as full-time starters, as they went 15-1 in team matches and advanced to the semifinals of both the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships and the county tournament. They could contend for a singles position or return to doubles. Cherry Hill East will be relying on varsity newcomers to round out the lineup.
Outlook: The Cougars went 13-4 and extended their streak of South Jersey, Group 4 final appearances to six in a row before dropping a tight 3-2 match to old nemesis Lenape. There are key players to replace but they will continue to have high expectations.
Cherry Hill West
Lions
Players to watch: Consistency is always key in tennis, and Cherry Hill West has it thanks to the return of six starters, including seniors Hannah Azar and Caroline Solomons at the top of the lineup. Azar has played No. 1 singles every season of her career and is hoping to turn all of that experience into a fruitful final campaign. Solomons, meanwhile, has enjoyed success in the second position, including a 10-3 record in team matches last year. Senior Shea Clark and junior Nhi Nguyen went 5-3 at first doubles together, and Clark also filled in at singles when needed. Seniors Lila Gray and Emily Garbe developed chemistry at second doubles as well, posting a 7-3 record. Senior Hana Kolenovic has varsity experience at singles and doubles and will also contend for a starting job, and freshman Veranica Girshin could possibly contribute to the varsity squad right away.
Outlook: Cherry Hill West has made huge strides over the past two seasons and hopes to continue the progress this fall. The Lions went 8-9 with a playoff win in 2023, marking the program’s most successful season in 13 years.
Clearview
Pioneers
Players to watch: Senior Sarah Crawford is looking to end her sensational career at Clearview on a high note, and with her talent and commitment to the game, that shouldn’t be a problem. A singles starter since she was a freshman – she is entering her third year in the top spot – she emerged as one of South Jersey’s best players as a junior. She compiled a 21-1 record in team matches, captured her first Gloucester County title and reached the semifinals of the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships. She’ll look to stay in contention in those tournaments while also acting as a veteran leader for the Pioneers, who must replace almost the entire starting lineup. The only other returning starter is senior Jodi McGuigan, who went 14-5 at first doubles and reached the county final. She also won all three of her matches while filling in at third singles, so she appears ready to take on a bigger role behind Crawford. Senior Sienna Longo also hopes to vie for a starting job, and Clearview will rely on varsity newcomers to round out the lineup.
Outlook: Not only did the Pioneers go 21-2 last fall and reach their first sectional final in 20 years, but they also extended their streak of undefeated seasons in the Tri-County Conference Royal Division to five in a row and claimed their fourth consecutive Gloucester County title. There are five starting positions to fill, but the program has been in this situation before and always seems to reload – so it’s not wise to overlook Clearview, especially with Crawford still on the roster.
Eastern
Vikings
Players to watch: Eastern graduated all three of its starting singles players so a new leader will have to emerge, and junior Gowtami Manem just might be the person for the job. A starter at doubles each of her first two seasons, she went 6-6 at No. 1 as a sophomore and also filled in at first singles on two occasions, winning both times. Junior Avery Fox and senior Julia Capozzoli split time as Manem’s partner at first doubles, and both also saw time at second doubles and singles. They should play important roles somewhere in the lineup. Junior Hailey Ravitz and senior Anita Patel also have varsity doubles experience and will be counted on as well.
Outlook: The Vikings have several returners who have been tested at the varsity level, but most of their matches were in doubles. It may take the new singles lineup time to adjust, but once they do Eastern should be competitive.
Gloucester Catholic
Rams
Players to watch: Gloucester Catholic does not have any singles players returning from last year, but brings back several players who saw varsity time at doubles, including seniors Rhian Haller and Samantha Velazquez, who played first and second at various points of the season. Senior Victoria Lopane also filled in at second doubles when called upon. It would not be surprising to see someone from that group emerge as the new No. 1 singles. Takima Hawkins, Aislinn Murphy and Aubrey Johnson are other seniors who are new to the program but are expected to have an impact. Sophomore Iliana Castenada and freshman Carlee Levin will also battle for starting spots.
Outlook: New head coach Taylor Rouh, a former player in the program, is eager to pass on her passion for the sport to her team, which will look to make steady progress throughout the season.
Haddonfield
Bulldawgs
Players to watch: Five starters return for Haddonfield, including all three singles players, who are each coming off impressive seasons. Junior Mia Swiecicki made the leap from doubles as a freshman to first singles as a sophomore and responded with a stellar season. She posted a 27-10 record, won the Colonial Conference Tournament, reached the round of 16 at the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships and won a match at the state singles tournament. It will be exciting to see how she follows up that performance this fall. Senior Evie York has been a fixture in the singles lineup since she was a freshman, including the No. 2 spot last year, when she went 26-8 and was the conference runner-up. Senior Eliza Gordon moved up from doubles to third singles and also compiled a 25-8 record. Junior Marlina Kadar is another key returner who played first doubles and made the SJIC final to go with a conference title while compiling a 30-5 record. Sophomore Sophie Fred earned a spot right away as a rookie and played second doubles, reaching the conference final and finishing 26-5. Other returners with varsity doubles experience are juniors Mia Carr and Addison Super and sophomores Elise Pattay and Megan Washburn.
Outlook: The Bulldawgs’ 21-4 record in 2023 included 16 wins by 5-0 scores and the program’s 22nd straight sectional title. There’s no reason they shouldn’t remain among the area’s elite in 2024.
Kingsway
Dragons
Players to watch: All three of Kingsway’s starting singles players from last year received their diplomas, so the lineup will have a much different look. Seniors Skylar Grabarski and Molly Baldino are coming off a solid season at first doubles together and will look to assume new roles. They were each victorious in their only singles appearance in 2023 and are strong contenders to move up the ladder. Sophomore Abby Malesich is the only other returning starter; she went 11-5 at second doubles in team matches as a rookie. She brings athleticism and competitiveness to the court and is also in the running for a singles position. Sophomore Kelsey Dion also saw varsity time as a freshman and could be ready for a full-time spot, while a host of other sophomores and juniors are hungry to earn a starting job as well.
Outlook: The Dragons went 11-9 with their first playoff victory in five years during a successful 2023 campaign. They hope to remain competitive this fall as they develop their new singles players.
Lenape
Indians
Players to watch: Jessica Yao moved into the No. 1 singles spot as a sophomore and was up to the challenge. She posted a 9-8 record against a difficult schedule in team matches, reached the quarterfinals of the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships and made the all-South Jersey team. She should only get better as an upperclassman. Senior Amee Chauhan enters her third year as a varsity starter after playing first doubles as a sophomore and third singles last season, when she went 8-6 in team matches. Lenape’s other two returning starters are junior Elise Hyler and sophomore Anushka Pal, who were first doubles partners and reached the SJIC quarterfinals.
Outlook: The Indians repeated as South Jersey, Group 4 champions with an exciting 3-2 win over rival Cherry Hill East and finished a memorable season with a 13-5 record. With Yao leading a strong returning core, they expect to be in the mix once again.
Moorestown
Quakers
Players to watch: A talented nucleus returns for Moorestown, despite the loss of junior Alana Lee, who is being homeschooled this year after playing first singles each of the past two seasons and winning the Burlington County Open as a sophomore. Junior Jane Ho, who has been a singles starter since she was a rookie, could be ready to move into the top spot. She played No. 2 as a sophomore and went 14-6 in team matches. Freshman Akshaya Peketi is expected to have an immediate impact and should also challenge for a starting singles job along with junior MJ Bartholo, who played first doubles in several big matches, including the sectional final and state semifinals. Senior Sasha Krachman was a full-time doubles starter, mostly at No. 2, and is another key returner. Senior Sara Zheng and juniors Ruhi Abrol and Noora Rashid also have varsity experience and will look to crack the lineup.
Outlook: The Quakers’ 19-4 season featured the Burlington County Open title, their sixth consecutive sectional final and their first sectional championship since 2020. Expectations will remain high.
Moorestown Friends
Foxes
Players to watch: Moorestown Friends brings back five starters but will be looking for a new first singles following the graduation of Avani Verma. Senior Sophia Lalani is the leading candidate to replace her after auditioning for the top spot at second singles last year, where she was competitive in most of her matches. Lalani also played third singles as a sophomore so she has plenty of varsity experience. Senior Ava Patel could also be in the mix for a singles position again following a season at No. 3. Seniors Anna Thompson and Sarah Huynh were partners at first doubles and will play key roles somewhere in the lineup as well. Sophomore Erika Capella earned a starting job at second doubles as a rookie, and will challenge for a singles spot.
Outlook: After posting a 10-9 overall record in their final season in the Friends Schools League, the Foxes are excited to see how they stack up against new competition in the Burlington County Scholastic League. With 30 players signed up, the program is in good shape heading into unfamiliar territory.
Paul VI
Eagles
Players to watch: Senior Natalya Slonis has high hopes for her final season, which will likely be her third at first singles. She posted a 10-7 record and reached the final of the Camden County Tournament during a solid junior campaign. Senior Hannah Rowan is another top returner who has played second singles each of the past two years and posted a 14-4 record in 2023. Senior Caroline Woodside has played first doubles the past two seasons and went 13-4 with junior Katerina Slonis a year ago, while junior Annabelle Salvano is another experienced doubles player who competed at No. 2 last season. They all could be ready for a move up to singles but will play important roles no matter where they end up. Sophomores Erika Oman and Sarah Wang will also push for varsity spots.
Outlook: The Eagles have been on a nice run lately, including back-to-back 13-win seasons and a trip to the sectional semifinals last fall. The strong stretch should continue with Slonis and Rowan setting the tone.
Seneca
Golden Eagles
Players to watch: Seneca said goodbye to two-year first singles Kim Wash but welcomes back the rest of the starting lineup. Junior Claire Lewis has played No. 2 in each of her first two seasons and will be in contention for a move up the ladder. Sophomore Elisa Goncalves could also be in the mix; she seized the third singles spot as a rookie and earned 19 wins during team matches. Senior Bella Giancoli has singles experience as well and is coming off a 13-8 season at first doubles with senior Avery Emmons. The other starters back in the fold are senior Izzy DiMenna and junior Topham Taylor, who were partners at second doubles. Sophomore Painsley Hansbury will also look to have an impact.
Outlook: The Golden Eagles bounced back in a big way last fall, improving by 10 wins over the year before, reaching the sectional semifinals and finishing with a 14-8 record. They also went undefeated in the Olympic National on their way to the division title. This has the makings for another successful season as they aim to defend their crown.
Shawnee
Renegades
Players to watch: Senior Divya Prajapati has been a starter since she was a freshman and is primed to play a major role once again in her final season. She played No. 2 singles as a junior and was sensational during team matches, posting a 14-2 record. She also was the second singles champion at the Burlington County Open. Junior Sofia Kaufer will enter her third year as a starter after playing second doubles as a freshman and third singles as a sophomore. She compiled an impressive 13-3 record in team matches. Other returning starters are junior Emma Czechowski, who competed at first doubles, and sophomore AnnaKate Clark, who earned a spot at second doubles in her rookie campaign. Shawnee is also excited to welcome in freshman Sofia Basto Cabrera, who is on track to have a huge impact right away, possibly at the top of the lineup. She is ranked 18th nationally in singles for 14-and-under players.
Outlook: The Renegades reached the sectional semifinals during a 10-6 season in 2023. They have some big spots to fill but should remain a tough opponent for every team on their schedule.
Washington Township
Minutemaids
Players to watch: Four starters are back for Washington Township, including senior Delaney Schwartz, who has played second singles each of the past two seasons and is poised to take over the top spot. Junior Riley Holmes is another returner with plenty of varsity experience, having started at doubles since her freshman year. She figures to take a step up the ladder to singles. Junior Vivian Laliberte is another three-year starter who competed at second doubles with junior Lucy Halicks last season; they posted an 11-5 record together. Junior Alicia Fallon and sophomore Taylor Minchin will push for starting jobs as well.
Outlook: The Minutemaids went 11-10 with a playoff victory last fall for their first winning season since 2018. They hope to ride the momentum into 2024.
