Is choosing a high school like picking out a hoodie? You might be surprised. Here are six questions to ask yourself to help you with the big decision.
How well does it match?
Clashing is painful, whether it’s patterns or personalities. For the same reason you don’t get dressed in the dark, you want to take a good look at the place you’ll think of as home for the next four years. How well does it match you? Are you a soprano who needs a choir? A lacrosse player who needs the proper field? A robotics engineer who needs a lab? Make sure your school is equipped with the tools that enable you to develop your strengths and interests.
Why Paul VI?
With a wide array of academic electives, 25 NJSIAA varsity sports – often with at least two levels – and nearly two dozen performing and fine arts classes, Paul VI has what matters to its students.
Does it match anything else?
Just like you appreciate the hoodie that goes with more than one pair of sweatpants, a high school that works for the interests of students other than yourself is a positive. There’s something reassuring in knowing that the new field surface is marked for four different sports, and that the stage has new LED lights to make the musical literally sparkle. You can count on learning geometry from your teacher, but what you can learn from your classmate who plays the violin is also worth knowing.
Why Paul VI?
The mission of a diocesan school is relatively broad, and Paul VI takes its responsibility to nurture the interests and talents of a wide range of students seriously. Athletes, artists and academics all have their place at Paul VI, within the supportive framework of a Catholic environment.
Is there room to grow?
Room for growth is even more important in a school than in a sweatshirt. Just as you can bet that you’ll grow in inches during high school, your interests and abilities will expand as well. What does a school offer that might be a path for your future self?
Why Paul VI?
With well-equipped programs in computer science, business, communications and more, Paul VI offers opportunity to learn in and about fields that are both academic and offer glimpses into future careers.
Is it well made?
While your hoodie may not be considered an investment piece, cutting corners is never a good thing. This goes double, triple and more when it comes to your high school. Is the facility well-maintained? Is the equipment up to date? How’s the technology? An exceptional high school education is most certainly an investment, and it’s fair to ask if the school has continued to invest in the necessary environments and tools to support the curriculum.
Why Paul VI?
Responsibly managed and beautifully maintained, the school adheres to a calendar of projects and improvements for both the physical plant and the academic programs that bring real meaning to the term “PVI Pride.”
Is it comfortable?
You’ll make a single trip to the fitting room for the hoodie, but there are many more opportunities to try out at a high school. Tours, in-school visits, open houses—these events are designed to help you assess if the school is a good fit for you, and to help you gain a higher comfort level.
Why Paul VI?
The admissions event calendar offers events that range from the annual pull-out-all-the-stops open house, to the smaller, tailored-to-the-student “VI-er Day” visits. Registered freshmen can feel even more at home with a special spring event and summer camps to make the transition to high school a smooth one.
Does it look good on me?
You know that go-to garment—the one that brings out your eye color, and somehow just makes you feel good about yourself every time you wear it? The right high school is something like that. There’s one out there that will help to make you the best version of yourself by developing your talents, expanding your horizons, and helping you through the bumps along the way.
Why Paul VI?
A 14:1 student-to-teacher ratio, a broad and balanced curriculum, a full-time mental health counselor and a focused and consistent guidance program to pave the path to college all work together to achieve the school’s mission to “actualize student potential.”
