2023 High School Tennis Preview

by Staff

BISHOP EUSTACE
CRUSADERS
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Senior Laurel Montuori has been a starter at singles since she was a freshman and filled the No. 1 spot on a full-time basis last year. She will look to be a leader on and off the court for Bishop Eustace this fall while contending for a winning record. Several other experienced players return, including seniors Michelle Lu and Kiara Sicilia, who ended the 2022 campaign as first doubles partners. Both could be candidates for a singles position behind Montuori. Senior Carly Troy and sophomore Sophia Alicea saw varsity time at doubles last year as well, and a few freshmen could make an impact right away.

OUTLOOK: Last year was a rebuilding one for Bishop Eustace, but with a veteran group led by Montuori back in the fold, the Crusaders have a chance to be more competitive in 2023.

CHEROKEE
CHIEFS
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Shruti Mannan has played No. 1 singles since she was a freshman and is poised for a huge senior season at Cherokee. She compiled a 15-2 record during team matches last fall, advanced to the final of the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships and reached the semifinals of the Olympic Conference Tournament. Mannan also won a pair of matches at the state singles tournament before bowing out in the third round. She is the only experienced singles player returning, but several doubles players from last year should be ready to make the leap. That includes senior Allison Larkin and sophomore Camryn Nelson, who played first doubles together for most of the season and went 8-3. Junior Fariha Khan and sophomore Nidhi Mandrekar are other returning doubles players with potential.

OUTLOOK: The Chiefs went 10-7 last year for their first winning season since 2016 and reached the sectional semifinals. There are some big positions to fill, but with Mannan leading the way, hopes are high.

CHERRY HILL EAST
COUGARS

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior Sophia Liu moved into the No. 1 singles position for Cherry Hill East early in her freshman season and has been there ever since. As a junior, she won the Camden County Tournament and reached the round of 16 at the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships (SJIC) for the second consecutive year. Liu is primed for a big final season. Four other starters are back, including sophomore Michelle Michalowski, who seized the third singles spot as a rookie and posted an impressive 12-2 record during team matches. Seniors Karina Gupta and Ella Hampton had a solid season at first doubles, while senior Valerie Wang played second doubles and advanced to the SJIC quarterfinals. Juniors Maya Pater and Ariel Ivler also have doubles experience and will look to become full-time starters.

OUTLOOK: The Cougars’ 12-5-1 season in 2022 included their fifth straight appearance in the sectional final, where they lost to rival Lenape. Liu and the other returners expect to be in the mix come playoff time once again.

CHERRY HILL WEST
LIONS
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Junior Hannah Azar has played first singles each of her first two seasons and is hoping to make big strides now that she’s an upperclassman. She leads the way for Cherry Hill West along with Caroline Solomons, another talented junior who posted an 8-5 record in team matches, mostly at second singles. Junior Emily Garbe is the only other returning starter; she had a strong season at second doubles and was part of nine victories during team matches and another at the Camden County Tournament. Competition in the preseason will determine the other starting positions.

OUTLOOK: The Lions rebounded from back-to-back winless campaigns to go 7-8 last fall, their most victories in a season since 2010. They will look to ride that momentum and remain competitive.

CLEARVIEW
PIONEERS
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Clearview only returns three starters, but one of them is No. 1 singles Sarah Crawford, who is coming off a terrific sophomore season and is primed for a big junior campaign. She went 18-1 in team matches—only losing to Shawnee’s Samantha Tepes, the top player in South Jersey in 2022—and reached the final of the Gloucester County Tournament. She should be in contention again for the county title and will also look to go far in the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships after advancing to the round of 32 last year. Senior Felicity Huang is another talented singles player who went 17-2 in team matches at the No. 3 spot. A semifinalist at the county tournament, she is expected to move up the ladder to second singles. Senior Ava Hertlein could also be ready to take on a singles position, as she went 17-1 at second doubles during team matches, with the only loss coming to Shawnee in a tiebreaker. She was also a Gloucester County semifinalist. Senior Kaleigh Owens hopes to have an impact as well, as she will battle for a spot at singles or doubles.

OUTLOOK: The Pioneers have been on quite a roll lately, as they notched their fourth straight undefeated season in the Tri-County Conference Royal Division last year and three-peated as Gloucester County champions. They reached the sectional semifinals before falling to eventual champ Shawnee and finished with a 17-2 overall record. There are big spots to fill in the lineup, but with Crawford at the top, they have the potential to thrive again.

EASTERN
VIKINGS
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Senior Magha Kumar has been playing first singles for Eastern since she was a sophomore and is looking to go out on a high note in her final season. She has made the round of 16 at the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships two years in a row. Senior Jordan Kramer is another returning starter at singles; she played mostly in the No. 3 spot and was competitive in the majority of her team matches, winning five. Senior Hannah Safady competed at first doubles as a junior and could be ready for a singles position after getting some time at No. 3 toward the end of last season. Sophomore Gowtami Manem started at second doubles as a freshman, and senior Alanna Stein also has doubles experience.

OUTLOOK: The highlight of the Vikings’ 4-10-1 season last fall was an exciting playoff victory over Kingsway. They have a solid core returning and hope to build on that match and contend for a winning season.

GLOUCESTER CATHOLIC
RAMS

PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Senior Emily Mondel has been a varsity starter each of the past two seasons and will look to lead Gloucester Catholic in her final campaign. She moved up from doubles as a sophomore to singles as a junior and saw time at both the No. 2 and No. 1 positions. Junior Lily Cole gained varsity experience as a sophomore and will look to play a big role as well. Sophomore Sophia Kalinowski showed potential as a freshman and should also factor into the starting lineup.

OUTLOOK: The Rams have been in rebuilding mode in recent years but hope to increase the numbers in the program and be competitive with their division rivals.

HADDONFIELD
BULLDAWGS

PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Haddonfield graduated its top two singles players but still has a solid core returning, including junior Evie York, who has played No. 3 singles each of her first two seasons. She posted a 24-9 record as a sophomore and reached the semifinals of the Colonial Conference Tournament and the quarterfinals of the Camden County Tournament. She will be in the mix to take over at No. 1. The Bulldawgs also bring back three doubles starters who are coming off impressive seasons. Junior Eliza Gordon and sophomore Mia Swiecicki played both first and second doubles—usually as partners—with Gordon going 23-6 and Swiecicki finishing with a 26-6 record. They claimed conference and county titles together and advanced to the semifinals of the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships (SJIC). Senior Emily Turnage went 28-7 at first and second doubles and was part of the team that made the SJIC, conference and county finals. She and her partner also won two matches at the state doubles tournament. Senior Chloe Kamp went undefeated in four varsity doubles matches and could move into a starting position, and other returners battling for sports include seniors Abby Cutter, Maya Dunham, Ella Goodworth and Maya Lewbart and sophomore Addison Super.

OUTLOOK: The Bulldawgs’ 19-5 season in 2022 was highlighted by their 21st straight sectional championship. There are spots to fill in the lineup but the talent is in place to keep the streak alive this fall.

KINGSWAY
DRAGONS

PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Four starters return for Kingsway, including all three singles players, so there is a strong foundation to build upon. Senior Annabelle Williams made the jump from first doubles to first singles last year, and although it took some time to get used to the high level of competition, she won four of her last five team matches and should enter her final season with increased confidence. Senior Ryan Finlaw is a four-year starter coming off a terrific junior season in which she posted a 12-5 record at second singles during team matches. Senior Margaret Shableski moved into the varsity lineup at third singles and went 11-7 during team matches; she should be even better with a year of experience under her belt. The fourth full-time starter back in the fold is senior Noelle Flail, who went 11-4 at doubles, mostly in the top spot. Juniors Skylar Graborski and Molly Baldino both got their feet wet in doubles as sophomores and will look to crack the starting seven.

OUTLOOK: After finishing with a winning record of 9-8 last season, the Dragons have the potential to be even better this fall and hope to make noise in the playoffs and at the Gloucester County Tournament.

LENAPE
INDIANS
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Senior Isabella Cao has been waiting patiently for her chance to play No. 1 singles and will likely get that opportunity this fall after playing second for the past three seasons. She is in line to replace four-year first singles Rhea Sethi and should be up to the task after going 14-2 in team matches, reaching the semifinals of the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships (SJIC) and claiming the Burlington County second singles title as a junior. Sophomore Jessica Yao is coming off a fantastic freshman season at third singles in which she went 14-3 in team matches and also won a match at the SJIC. Junior Amee Chauhan was part of the first doubles team that went 13-4 in team matches and reached the SJIC quarterfinals, and sophomore Elise Hyler also returns after playing second doubles and going 11-5. Senior Rebecca Cui is another veteran expected to contribute.

OUTLOOK: The Indians posted a 12-4 record and went on a memorable run to the South Jersey, Group 4 championship last year, the third sectional title in program history and first since 2014. Sethi and fellow captain Kaitlyn King are impossible to replace, but Lenape still has a talented core and hopes to remain a contender.

MOORESTOWN
QUAKERS

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Alana Lee grabbed a hold of the first singles position as a freshman and was not intimidated by the spotlight in the least. She went 19-3 during team matches, reached the No. 1 singles final at the Burlington County Open and won a pair of matches at the state singles tournament. It will be exciting to see what she can accomplish as a sophomore. Moorestown also brings back its two other singles starters: senior Erica Zhang and sophomore Jane Ho. Zhang moved up from second doubles to second singles and went 15-7 in team matches. She also advanced to the quarterfinals of the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships and the second singles final at the county tournament. Ho seized the No. 3 singles spot as a rookie and compiled a solid 16-5 mark in team matches while reaching the semifinals of her draw at the county open. The other two returning starters are seniors Eva Hinke and Emma Rabenou, who posted a 14-3 record together in team matches and captured the second doubles county title. Junior Sasha Krachman also has varsity doubles experience and sophomore MJ Bartholo will be competing for a spot as well.

OUTLOOK: The Quakers advanced to their fifth straight sectional final last year before falling to Shawnee on their way to a 17-6 overall record. With most of the starting lineup back, they have a strong chance of extending the streak and contending for a title.

MOORESTOWN FRIENDS
FOXES

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior Avani Verma is a three-year starter for Moorestown Friends, and after playing second singles as a junior, she should be ready to move into the top spot. She posted a 12-4 record in team matches last season, made the second singles semifinals at the Burlington County Open and was named honorable mention on the Friends Schools League all-star team. Junior Sophia Lalani also returns after earning the third singles job as a sophomore and showing potential. All four doubles starters are back as well: juniors Ava Patel and Sarah Huynh, who played No. 1 together, and the No. 2 duo of juniors Anna Thompson and Daisy Maturo. Sophomores Sophia Lo Re and Makenna Wakahia also have doubles experience and will look to crack the varsity lineup.

OUTLOOK: The 2022 season was a transition year for the Foxes as they finished 6-10 with an inexperienced roster. With six of seven starters back this fall, they should be much improved.

PAUL VI
EAGLES

PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Paul VI is coming off an impressive campaign and all seven starters who ended the season are back, so hopes are high for the Eagles. Junior Natalya Slonis climbed the ladder from first doubles as a freshman to first singles as a sophomore and handled the leap just fine, as she went 9-7 in team matches. Junior Hannah Rowan claimed the second singles position and reeled off a excellent 13-3 record, while senior Hailey Rowan started the year at first doubles and went 6-1 before taking over at third singles and winning seven of her eight matches there. Junior Caroline Woodside posted a 14-2 record at first doubles, including a 7-1 mark with sophomore Annabelle Salvano, and the second doubles team of senior Ashley Batejan and sophomore Katarina Slonis went 8-5 together.

OUTLOOK: The Eagles’ 13-3 record in 2022 marked a nine-win improvement from the year before and included a playoff victory. With the entire starting lineup back, they will set lofty goals for 2023.

SENECA
GOLDEN EAGLES

PLAYERS TO WATCH:
In almost a complete reversal from last year, when Seneca had very few experienced players, the Golden Eagles are happy to welcome back the entire roster this fall, starting with senior No. 1 singles Kim Wash. A three-year starter, she moved from second singles as a sophomore to the top spot as a junior and posted a 10-6-1 record in team matches. Wash is a tough competitor who will put up a good fight just about every time she takes the court. Sophomore Claire Lewis played second singles as a rookie and junior Bella Giancoli secured the third position, and both should only get better with a year of varsity tennis under their belts. Senior Jemma Dybus has been a fixture at doubles since she was a sophomore and teamed with junior Avery Emmons at No. 1 last year. Seniors Piper Ludwick and Bailey Kunz and sophomore Topham Taylor rotated at second doubles, and junior Isabella DiMenna also saw time. Newcomers Elisa Goncalves and Paisley Hansbury should be nice additions as well.

OUTLOOK: Seneca had some growing pains with a young team and finished 4-14 last year. Now that everyone is used to playing at a high level, expect significant progress this season.

SHAWNEE
RENEGADES

PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Shawnee said goodbye to a remarkable senior class led by Samantha Tepes, arguably the greatest player in program history, so this year’s roster will have a much different look. One of the top returners is senior Natasha Sharnoff, who has been a starter at singles since she was a freshman. She played No. 3 last year and went 15-3 during team matches while winning her draw at the Burlington County Open. Sharnoff has waited for her turn to play first singles and will be a leader this year for the Renegades. Junior Divya Prajapati could also be in line for a singles position after starting at doubles the past two years. Last season, she was part of the No. 1 pair that went 15-2 in team matches, captured the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships (SJIC) title and won a match at states. The third returning starter is sophomore Sofia Kaufer, who played second doubles and compiled a 15-3 record in team matches. She made the SJIC quarterfinals and won a match at states.

OUTLOOK: The Renegades went undefeated against South Jersey competition for the second year in a row last season, repeated as sectional champions and finished with a 16-2 record. They won’t be quite at that level after graduating so many great players, but the talent is in place for a successful campaign.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP
MINUTEMEN

PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Six of seven starters return for Washington Township, including senior Christina Baldosaro, who started at doubles as a sophomore and made a smooth transition to No. 1 singles last year. She went 10-8 during team matches and will again shoot for a winning record while also looking to go on a run at the Gloucester County Tournament. Junior Delaney Schwartz and senior Lauren Stanger both showed potential playing second and third singles, respectively, last season, while sophomore Riley Holmes could also push for a singles position after playing first doubles as a rookie. Senior Riley Borkowski and sophomore Vivian Laliberte also return after teaming up at second doubles.

OUTLOOK: The Minutemaids battled in most of their matches last year on their way to a 5-13 final record. An experienced starting lineup should translate to more victories this fall.
