BISHOP EUSTACE
CRUSADERS
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Bishop Eustace returns almost the entire roster from its inaugural season, including sophomore outside hitter Hailey Mack, who led the team with 78 kills and added 22 digs and 51 aces. Senior outside hitter Paris Bailey (39 kills) is another offensive weapon, while juniors Claire Jefferis (86 assists, 30 aces) and Emily Glowacki (49 assists, 41 aces) are experienced setters. Sophomore libero Paige Ladik tied for the Olympic Conference lead with 67 aces and paced the Crusaders with 95 digs, and senior Lauren Ladik (29 digs, 28 aces) is a key defensive specialist. Junior Lyla Kirchner and senior Kelly Walsh contribute at opposite and middle blockers to keep an eye on are juniors Angelina Anzideo and Maya Barger. Sophomore Samantha Costello and junior Caroline Ovecka are also hoping to make an impact.

OUTLOOK: The Crusaders put together a solid 9-10 record in their first varsity season and should only get better in year No. 2.

CAMDEN CATHOLIC
FIGHTING IRISH

PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Senior middle blocker Sophia Palumbo has been an important player in the front row for Camden Catholic over the past two years and is looking forward to a big final season. She had 48 kills and 14 blocks as a junior. The Irish graduated their leading offensive standout and will be counting on junior outside hitter Emily O’Donnell to provide a spark. Senior Lydia JoveKunst, a lefty, will move to right-side hitter, and Maddie Gavin-Ruple is expected to contribute at middle. Senior Francine Fernandes is a key returner who is looking to take over as the libero, and a new setter will have to emerge as well. Other valuable veterans are seniors Emma Johnson and Faith Gallagher and sophomore Abigail Riley, while juniors Kaitlyn Ronkowski and Maggie Ronkowski are hoping to play bigger roles.

OUTLOOK: The Irish went 11-7 with a playoff victory last year before falling in the Non-Public A quarterfinals. If they can figure out several crucial areas on the court, they should make a run at another winning season.

CHEROKEE
CHIEFS

PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Cherokee is fortunate to bring back one of the best setters in the area in senior Anna Hunter, a three-year starter. She was third in the Olympic Conference with 305 assists last season and also finished in the top 10 with 53 aces to go with 128 digs and 27 kills. Her passing will be crucial for an offense led by senior outside hitter Marissa Strauss (72 kills, 45 digs, 25 aces) and senior middle blocker Abigail Dixon (28 kills, 14 blocks). Junior Chloe Burti will also look to play a big role at outside hitter and senior Kayla Niederberger is another experienced middle. Senior Lauren Owings (193 digs, 35 aces) and junior Amelia Jones (81 digs) are veteran defensive specialists.

OUTLOOK: After posting an 11-14 record against a challenging schedule in 2022, the Chiefs expect to remain competitive and contend for a winning campaign under new head coach Maggie Reed.

CHERRY HILL EAST
COUGARS

PLAYERS TO WATCH:  Cherry Hill East welcomes back a pair of talented outside hitters in senior Alaina Farber and junior Sophie Pintel, who each recorded more than 100 kills and finished seventh and 13th, respectively, in the Olympic Conference. Farber also totaled 18 blocks, 121 digs and 40 aces and has the potential to be one of the top all-around players in the area. Senior Elena Decker (249 assists) and junior Aubree Mon (205 assists) are both excellent setters, and other key returners include seniors Lydia Ding (122 digs, 34 aces) and Kaylee Greer (42 kills, 19 blocks). Stav Butbol and Jiwoo Lee round out the strong senior class, while other experienced players expected to contribute are juniors Julianna Simpson, Amanda Yu and Iris Yuan and sophomores Angela Choe and Greta Mueller.

OUTLOOK: The Cougars went 16-9 last year—the 24th season in a row they reached double digits in wins—and advanced to the sectional semifinals in one of the toughest brackets in the state. Their success should continue this fall.

CHERRY HILL WEST
LIONS
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Cherry Hill West made big strides as a program in 2022 and welcomes back several key returners, including setters Ayana Wheeler, a senior, and Molly Bovell, a junior, who will orchestrate the attack with senior hitters Korina Feliciano, Emily Tran, Mikayla Pitzorella and Kyra Washington scoring points. All-conference libero Erika Vargas, a senior, enters her third year as a varsity starter, and up-and-coming role player Sophia O’Shaughnessy, a junior, is expected to help the Lions as well.

OUTLOOK: After making the playoffs for the first time in five years last season, Cherry Hill West is looking forward to more success in 2023. With the recent hiring of legendary coach Scott Arnauer as his assistant, head coach Brian Zaun is excited to get back in the gym with his team.

CLEARVIEW
PIONEERS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior outside hitter Avery Roberts has accumulated more than 200 kills in her three seasons at Clearview, including a career-high 105 last year, and is poised for a huge final campaign in green and gold. She also totaled 108 digs last fall and will be a key player both offensively and defensively. She is joined in the front row by junior middle Keira Rosner (27 kills, eight blocks), who will look to build on her promising sophomore season. Senior opposite Dakota Ellixson and junior Daniella Ortiz are other experienced returners, while sophomores Madisyn Powell and Alyssa Pierson will also push for playing time.

OUTLOOK: The Pioneers’ 9-11 record last season included a playoff victory, the third year in a row they advanced in the playoffs. With Roberts leading the way, they expect to remain competitive under new head coach Emma Cormican.

EASTERN
VIKINGS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Eastern brings back a strong nucleus led by senior outside hitter Kaitlyn Nyce, who led the team with 102 kills to go with 36 aces and 15 blocks. Senior Sydney Nguyen (60 kills, 15 aces) is another talented outside hitter, and the Vikings are also stacked at middle thanks to the return of seniors Isa Yumiseba (58 kills, 22 blocks, 25 aces) and Taylor McGann (28 kills, 16 blocks). Senior Bell Ang (31 kills) is another difference-maker in the front row and senior captain Sera Wong (71 assists) will be the director of the offense at setter. Senior Zoe Goldberg is an experienced libero and other seniors expected to contribute are Alexandra Sacavitch and Allison Brady. Sophomore Samantha Covone is a promising newcomer.

OUTLOOK: The Vikings notched their first winning record since 2015 last year as they finished 11-9 with a playoff victory before falling in the sectional quarterfinals. With so many key players returning, another successful season awaits.

GLOUCESTER CATHOLIC
RAMS

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior outside hitter Zoe DeAngelis was second on the team in kills last year and will again look to spark the attack for Gloucester Catholic. The Rams also bring back an experienced setter in junior Ava Godby, who should take over the role on a full-time basis, with support from senior Anna Gerardi. Senior Madison Maeser and sophomore Brianna Colon join DeAngelis as forces at the net, while sophomore defensive specialist Jordan Riggs had 37 digs and was second on the team with 27 aces during a promising rookie season. Freshman Emma Eddis is slated to start at libero and experienced defensive specialists include seniors Sofia Yucis, Emily Leahy and Josie Zacamy. Seniors Claire Tamagli and Isabella Teti hope to have an impact as well.

OUTLOOK: An athletic roster should help the Rams make strides following a 7-11 season, and they will aim for the program’s first winning record since 2016.

KINGSWAY
DRAGONS

PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Kingsway brings back four veteran standouts who are leaders offensively and defensively: junior outside hitters Mackenzie Layton and Sarah Elliott, senior opposite Jada Reese and junior setter Macie Ferla. Layton led the Dragons with 88 kills to go with 66 digs and 25 aces, while Reese was second with 64 kills and first with 18 blocks. Elliott filled the stat sheet, as she led the team with 114 digs and 39 aces while adding 61 kills, and Ferla (164 assists, 43 digs, 33 aces and 11 kills) also contributes in multiple ways. Senior Logan Schaffer (68 assists) is another experienced setter, and important pieces at middle are Junior Addison Wood and senior Erin Lail. The defense is led by junior Haleigh Page (77 digs).

OUTLOOK: The Dragons, who went 9-11 in 2022, have been knocking on the door of a winning record in recent seasons, and this could be the year they break through.

LENAPE
INDIANS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Lenape is paced by a pair of senior captains who have already left a lasting impression on the program: Bria Morgan and Layla Flanigan. Morgan has been a starter at outside hitter since her freshman year and ranks in the Indians’ all-time top 10 for both kills and digs. She led the team in both categories last season, totaling 139 and 148, respectively, while adding 36 aces. Flanigan is a three-year starter at setter and collected 350 assists as a junior along with 76 digs, 14 kills and 30 aces. She needs just 62 assists in her final season to become Lenape’s career leader. Senior Abigail Oswari (98 kills, 92 digs, 38 aces) is another talented outside hitter, while senior opposite Jadyn Sawyer (35 kills), senior middle Ella Michener (20 kills, 10 blocks) and junior middle Hope Young (13 blocks) are other contributors in the front row. Senior Olivia Sullivan (82 digs) is a veteran libero and junior Isabella Avallone is looking to take on a bigger role as an upperclassman.

OUTLOOK: Lenape, which posted a 17-6 record in 2022, has established itself as one of the most consistent programs in the area and seems to reach double digits in wins every year. With Morgan and Flanigan leading the charge, the good times should continue to roll.

MOORESTOWN
QUAKERS

PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Moorestown suffered serious losses to graduation but does return three talented veterans to build around, starting with senior Marissa Ortiz. She tied for second on the team with 73 kills last year and added 15 blocks. Junior Bethany Trzeciak is another experienced player in the front row who recorded 66 kills and a team-high 23 blocks, while junior Rima Takla added 60 kills, a team-high 124 digs and 34 aces. Takla is capable of contributing at several positions and could take over at setter. Eliana Delgado and Shelby DeVose are seniors who are itching to move into the starting lineup and Lindsay Bonavita is a sophomore looking to assume a bigger role.

OUTLOOK: The Quakers have reeled off consecutive 18-win seasons and although they have several important positions to fill, they expect to stay competitive and hopefully contend in their division.

PAUL VI
EAGLES

PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Paul VI must replace several top players from a team that went 27-1, including all-state first-teamer Zharia Harris-Waddy, but plenty of talent remains. Senior outside hitter Emily Ezeiruaku led the Eagles with 176 kills while adding 104 digs and 61 aces on her way to all-state second-team honors. She’ll get help in the front row from senior opposite Kailyn Greene-Gordon (22 kills, 42 blocks) and junior middle Kassadi Avent (40 kills, 11 blocks), who contributed right away after transferring in from Kingsway last year. Junior Kayle Arozio is another key returner at middle and sophomore outside hitter Megan Evans is expected to have a big year after seeing time as a freshman. Opposite London Jackson is another sophomore who showed potential as a rookie and junior Danielle Mascolo will be in the mix to take over as the starting setter. Two newcomers are also being counted for major roles: Maggie Carcillo, a sophomore transfer from Cardinal O’Hara, can play outside hitter, opposite and setter, while Sam Renzi, a junior transfer from Merion Mercy Academy, will serve as libero and be crucial to the team’s defense and passing.

OUTLOOK: The Eagles went undefeated last fall until dropping a three-set heartbreaker to rival Immaculate Heart in the Non-Public state final in another amazing season. The standards remain high for one of the premier programs in South Jersey and they should be a state championship contenders again.

SENECA
GOLDEN EAGLES

PLAYERS TO WATCH:  Seneca said goodbye to most of its starting lineup and will have a much different look this season. The most experienced returner is junior libero Grace Yeager, a three-year varsity player who had 79 digs and 27 aces as a sophomore. Sophomore Jordan Cutts saw time at outside hitter as a rookie and will look to emerge as an offensive weapon along with junior outside hitters Lauren Stone and Amanda Connelly. Juniors Emily Rowan, Rowan Breen and Lila Doyle will contribute at middle and junior Lauren Murray will be in the mix at opposite. Senior Nada Othman could become the starting setter and returners at defensive specialist include juniors Shelby Yeager, Bailey Allen and Isabelle Konopka.

OUTLOOK: The Golden Eagles made an impressive run to the sectional semifinals last year and finished with an 11-11 record. With so many new faces in the lineup, they will attempt to get adjusted to varsity volleyball quickly and keep the program humming along under new head coach Beth Toth.

SHAWNEE
RENEGADES

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior outside hitter Julia Barrett emerged as a key offensive player for Shawnee last season and finished with 67 kills, good for second on the team. She will again spark the offense along with junior opposite Ella Truitt (45 kills, 65 digs, 29 aces). Senior Libby Wall and juniors Anna Stauss, Sakiyah Horsley and Norah Jedwabny will also be relied upon for their offensive and defensive skills in the front row. Junior Melinda Valasek and senior Hayley Yeager are among the candidates to take over as the starting setter and junior Amelia Franken will look to crack the rotation at opposite. Seniors Sarah Ko, Sophia Sciarra and Gabrielle Pullen will make a run for back-row positions.

OUTLOOK: Last year was supposed to be a rebuilding one for the Renegades, but they went 15-8 with a division championship and reached the sectional semifinals. There are again holes to fill in the lineup, but don’t count this group out.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP
MINUTEMAIDS

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Washington Township boasts a terrific senior class led by a pair of four-year starters: Bryn Bautista and Nina Cleary. Bautista, an outside hitter, has led the Minutemaids in kills every season of her career and enters her final campaign with a total of 509. She recorded 203 kills, 165 digs and 31 aces last season and made the all-Group 4 second team along with Cleary, Washington Township’s setter. Cleary collected 475 assists, 25 kills, 46 digs and 33 aces as a junior and has 1,103 assists in her career already. Other key seniors include opposite Ciana Bonatara (77 kills, 42 aces) and defensive specialists McKenna Quinn (58 digs, team-high 49 aces) and MaKenna Hagerty (104 digs, 31 aces). Middle Shanely Colon is another senior expected to contribute and junior defensive specialist Mia Larrea will push to be in the rotation as well.

OUTLOOK: The Minutemaids claimed the Royal Division championship in their first year in the Tri-County Conference, reached the Gloucester County Tournament final and the sectional semifinals in a memorable 23-4 season. They will continue to set the bar high and hope to contend with rival Williamstown for division, county and South Jersey titles.
