by Staff

BISHOP EUSTACE
CRUSADERS
RUNNERS TO WATCH: Bishop Eustace graduated an outstanding pair of runners in Arianna Cane and Elena Cicchini, who both placed in the top five at states two years in a row, so a new leader of the pack will have to emerge. A top candidate for the position is senior Anya Kazemi, who clocked a 20:21 at the Bob Kiessling sectional meet to place ninth, and went on to take 15th at states. Amelia Ingersoll (14th at sectionals) and Cassidy Dunk (17th at sectionals) are other talented seniors capable of setting the pace on any given day. Junior Donna Presenza and sophomore Sophia Kaloustian are other returners who consistently placed in Eustace’s top seven.

OUTLOOK: After placing third at states last year, the Crusaders hope to remain in contention behind their three senior leaders.

CAMDEN CATHOLIC
FIGHTING IRISH

RUNNERS TO WATCH:
Junior Nilaa Ponnappan emerged as Camden Catholic’s No. 1 runner as a sophomore and should only get better as an upperclassman. She finished third at the Camden County Championships, broke 20 minutes to take seventh at both the Olympic Conference and Bob Kiessling sectional meets, and finished just outside the top 10 in 11th at states. Senior Briana Deiwert and sophomore Brynn Deiwert finished 20th and 22nd, respectively, at the Kiessling Invitational, and both were also in the top 20 at the county meet. They hope to join Ponnappan near the front of the pack this fall. Senior Mary Picciano is a key veteran who is looking to bounce back from several injuries last year and will serve as captain along with Briana Deiwert.

OUTLOOK: Ponnappan will be worth watching in all of the major races and hopes to contend at several of them, and the rest of her team should be competitive as well.

CHEROKEE
CHIEFS
RUNNERS TO WATCH:
Kerry O’Day took over as Cherokee’s top runner as a junior and put together a memorable season, as she placed in the top 10 in four major races. She clocked an 18:57 to finish sixth at South Jersey, Group 4 sectionals and went on to take ninth at states before placing 40th at the Meet of Champions. Earlier in the season, O’Day took third at both the Burlington County Open and Olympic Conference Championships, posting a time of 18:39 at the latter. Another key veteran is junior Megan Niglio, who placed 10th at sectionals and 25th at states to qualify for the Meet of Champions. Niglio also had top-10 performances at the county and conference races. The Chiefs will also get a huge boost from the return of seniors Olivia Parkinson and Alaina Bromley, who are back after missing last season. Sophomore Maya Kumar showed potential as a rookie, while other returners looking to make an impact are juniors Haley Emenheiser, Autumn Praul and Grace Gorsline and senior Allison Rathman. Cherokee also welcomes in newcomers Veronica Ashcraft, Emily Butler, Grace Wojciechowski and Gabby Urban.

OUTLOOK: After a historic undefeated season in 2021, the Chiefs were not dominant last fall but still made their presence felt at the big meets and finished second in the county, fourth in the conference and sixth at sectionals. They should be among the leaders again at those races, with several runners in the mix for individual titles.

CHERRY HILL EAST
COUGARS

RUNNERS TO WATCH: Cherry Hill East will need to find a new No. 1 runner following the graduation of Alexis Tepper, one of the top competitors in South Jersey. Junior Cate Feudtner appears to be ready for the role after a solid sophomore season in which she placed 19th at the Olympic Conference Championships, 22nd at sectionals and 47th at states. Sophomore Shaela Conway will look to build on a strong freshman season—she took 20th in the conference and 25th at sectionals—while junior Jessica Zhou and senior Liz Ludman are experienced veterans. Sophomore Ella Davidson and junior Tiffany Guidarelli also hope to push for the top seven.

OUTLOOK:  The Cougars were contenders at several major races last fall, finishing second in the conference, fourth at sectionals and sixth at states. They might not have a standout like Tepper on this year’s roster, but they have several tough competitors who will look to continue the program’s winning tradition.

CHERRY HILL WEST
LIONS

RUNNERS TO WATCH:
Junior Nya Ruiz was Cherry Hill West’s top finisher at the Camden County Championships and sectionals last year and hopes to reach another level as an upperclassman by dropping her times into the low 20s. Senior Jade Abejo finished right behind her at sectionals and is also capable of leading the pack on any given day. Senior Mia Gerace and sophomore Milana Orlov will be counted on at the major races as well, while junior Nana Yaa Nunyuie and sophomore Ciara Peters will look to move up from JV and contribute on varsity.

OUTLOOK: The Lions have several promising returners and hope to make progress at the major races while being competitive during batch meets.

CLEARVIEW
PIONEERS

RUNNERS TO WATCH:  Clearview graduated a special senior class that included sectional champion Abigail Waddington, but a talented nucleus remains in place. Leading the way is senior Maggie Wisniewski, who has placed in the top 10 at sectionals two years in a row. Last season, she clocked an 18:45 to place sixth, and went on to take 12th at states and 47th at the Meet of Champions (MOC). Wisniewski also claimed third at the Gloucester County Championships and sixth at the Tri-County Conference Showcase. Allie Roes is another key senior who had top-10 efforts at the sectional, county and conference races to go with a 24th at states. Junior Lilla Porter rounds out a very good top three for the Pioneers; she was in the top 20 at the county and conference meets and finished 23rd at sectionals. Junior Anna Hagerman is another valuable veteran, and Clearview will need several younger runners to step up and contribute as well.

OUTLOOK: The last two seasons have been a magical ride for the Pioneers, capped off by the first state championship in program history last fall. They also repeated as sectional champs and captured county and conference titles before ending the year with a ninth at the MOC. There are certainly big shoes to fill, but Wisniewski and Roes intend on keeping them in the hunt in 2023.

EASTERN
VIKINGS

RUNNERS TO WATCH:
Senior Regan Bewley joined the team last fall and had an immediate impact, as she was Eastern’s top finisher at sectionals in 30th place. She also took 30th at the Olympic Conference Championships and consistently posted times in the low 20s. Junior Addison Foster and seniors Caroline Becker and Kayla Spalter are other key returners who finished within a few spots places of each other at the sectional and conference races. Junior Brianna Panchal should continue to improve as an upperclassman, and senior Taylor Hodnett provides depth. Freshmen Theresa Albertson and Mia Karcsh are newcomers to keep an eye on.

OUTLOOK: The Vikings have a hardworking core of veterans and will look to move up a few notches at the championship meets.

HADDONFIELD
BULLDAWGS

RUNNERS TO WATCH:
Haddonfield returns an outstanding core from its remarkable 2022 season, so expectations remain sky high. The Bulldawgs turned in a historic performance at sectionals, taking the top five spots in South Jersey, Group 2, and four of those runners are back. That group is led by senior Ava Thomas, the sectional champ with a time of 18:06. She was also the Colonial Conference champion, placed seventh at states and 16th at the Meet of Champions (MOC). Senior Riley Slootsky took second at sectionals, 11th at states and 21st at the MOC, and sophomore Riley Austin burst onto the scene as a freshman by placing second in the conference, third at sectionals, sixth at states and 25th at the MOC. Senior Audrey Naticchia finished fifth at sectionals and was Haddonfield’s top finisher at states, clocking a 19:30 for fifth. Junior Dylan Melcher had top-10 showings at the sectional, conference and Camden County meets, and seniors Sarah Fetter and Anna Stolarick are other talented returners who consistently ran in the low 20s. Sophomore Lauren Hamblin and senior Miranda Keith took sixth and 18th, respectively, at the county meet and add quality depth.

OUTLOOK:  Not only did the Bulldawgs extend their streak of sectional titles to 13 in a row, they also added a second consecutive state championship and placed second at the MOC before finishing third at regionals. This is a special crop of runners that will surely add to its list of accomplishments this fall.

KINGSWAY
DRAGONS

RUNNERS TO WATCH:
Kingsway dealt with several injuries to top runners last year, which opened the door for youngsters like Rachel Wiley and Alyssa Reiter to step up and deliver important contributions. Wiley, now a junior, had top-20 efforts at both the Gloucester County Championships and Tri-County Conference Showcase and placed 32nd at sectionals. Reiter, a sophomore, had a strong rookie season in which she clocked a 20:49 at sectionals for 28th place. She also finished 17th in the county and 26th in the conference. Both Wiley and Reiter will look to reach the next level this year by qualifying for states. They will be pushed by senior Alaina Zabielski, who qualified for states in the 3200 during spring track season. Senior Kendall Cramer is another talented veteran whose best performance was a 20th at the conference race. Sophomore Talia Allen should consistently land in the top seven for Kingsway, and senior Amelia Helkowski is another returner hoping to make continued progress.

OUTLOOK: The Dragons took third at both the conference and county meets and seventh at sectionals last year, and this proud program expects to be a team to watch at those races again this fall.

LENAPE
INDIANS

RUNNERS TO WATCH:  Sophomore Katie Gonzalez was Lenape’s top finisher at sectionals as a freshman and hopes to build on that performance this fall. Junior Kate Devery and senior Scarlet Chen are key veterans who will look to set an example for the rest of the roster, most of whom lack varsity experience. Other runners hoping to move up from JV include seniors Natalie Merle and Julia Burgess, junior Ruth Makara and sophomores Morgan Dugayo, Kaela Hannah and Vindhya Mavuri.

OUTLOOK: The Indians have had a limited number of varsity competitors in recent seasons, but the program is slowly but surely adding to the roster and hopes to make strides as a team this fall.

MOORESTOWN
QUAKERS

RUNNERS TO WATCH:
Julia Brock emerged as the No. 1 runner for Moorestown last year as a junior and has high hopes for her senior season. She placed sixth at the Burlington County Open, 11th at the Olympic Conference Championships and 12th at sectionals before clocking a 21:56 at states. Junior Noelia Reyes is another talented veteran who is capable of leading the pack. She had top-10 finishes at the county and conference races, took 19th at sectionals and ran a 22:23 at states. The Quakers bring back five other experienced runners who had strong showings at the big races and usually finished within seconds of each other. Senior Paige McCabe and juniors Hannah Byrd-Leitner and Sarah Brown all placed in the top 30 at sectionals, while juniors Jane Goettle and Gabrielle DeJoseph were not far behind. Mary Laufer is another senior looking to end her career on a high note and Lauren Schaffer is a sophomore who could contribute.

OUTLOOK: The Quakers had a memorable 2022 season that included county and conference titles, a fourth-place finish at sectionals and a 15th at states. With most of the team returning, they will aim high again this fall.

PAUL VI
EAGLES

RUNNERS TO WATCH:
Senior Shaelan McNally will look to put an exclamation point on her fantastic career at Paul VI this fall. She was the champion at the Bob Kiessling Invitational sectional meet, the Camden County Championships and the Olympic Conference Championships last season, and then claimed sixth at states for the second year in a row before competing at the Meet of Champions. She has plenty of talent around her too, including sophomore sensations Macy Huber and Giovanna Mantuano. Huber took second in the county, ninth in the conference, third at sectionals and 16th at states as a rookie. Mantuano also displayed loads of potential, taking 10th in the county, 17th in the conference, 11th at sectionals and 29th at states. Seniors Madison Pedicelli, Gisella Croge and Danielle Russell all placed in the top 20 at sectionals, and another senior, Katie Salvo, was not far behind in 23rd. Gianna Molavi rounds out the super talented senior class.

OUTLOOK: The Eagles were a team to reckon with at the major meets in 2022, as they took second in both the county and sectional races, fifth in the conference and sixth at states. It will be exciting to see McNally add to her list of achievements and the team possibly compete for a title or two.

SENECA
GOLDEN EAGLES

RUNNERS TO WATCH:
Seniors Alex Butcher and Catie Andrews lead the charge for Seneca and will look to inspire each other to big final seasons. Butcher has placed 16th at sectionals two years in a row, and last season Andrews was right behind her in 17th. At states they were again neck and neck, but this time Andrews crossed first in 43rd place and Butcher was just five seconds behind in 49th. Butcher also took eighth at the Burlington County Open and 13th at the Olympic Conference Championships, while Andrews finished 11th and 24th, respectively. Loralyn Balint, Mia Rose and Haylee Mehigan are other key seniors, and sophomores looking to build on encouraging rookie seasons are Simona DelCollo, Catherine Hodges and Lily Hoey.

OUTLOOK: The Golden Eagles’ best finish was a fourth at sectionals and they moved on to place 17th at states. With a strong one-two punch in Butcher and Andrews, another successful season is on the horizon.

SHAWNEE
RENEGADES

RUNNERS TO WATCH:   Shawnee brings back most of its top runners from a year ago, including junior Paige Cline, who emerged as a consistent No. 1 as a sophomore. Her best finish was a 10th at the Burlington County Open, and she also took 18th at the Olympic Conference Championships and 24th at sectionals. Seniors Amelia Owen and Claudia Koch and junior Ava Nix regularly clocked times in the low 20s and will be relied upon as well. The solid core of veterans also includes junior Kayla Dilks and seniors Keeley Riley, Caroline Healy and Misha Yadav.

OUTLOOK: The Renegades usually find a way to make their presence felt at the big races, and last year was no different as they took fourth in the county, seventh in the conference and sixth at sectionals. Expect more of the same in 2023.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP
MINUTEMAIDS

RUNNERS TO WATCH:
Kaylee Russen enjoyed a breakthrough season as a sophomore and will look to emerge as Washington Township’s No. 1 runner this fall as a junior. She placed seventh at the Gloucester County Championships and 10th at the Tri-County Conference Showcase before clocking a 19:49 to take 11th at sectionals. She ended her season at states, recording a time of 21:06 for 38th. Junior Rachael Wilson turned in top-20 performances at the county and conference races and Ella Johnson is another talented junior who took 20th in the county. The rest of the top seven will have to develop behind those three, with senior Isabella Bermudez among the potential contributors.

OUTLOOK: The Minutemaids were right in the thick of things at last year’s major meets, placing second at the county and conference races, third at sectionals and eighth at states. Several top runners graduated but they hope to stay in contention.
