BISHOP EUSTACE
CRUSADERS
RUNNERS TO WATCH: Senior Matt Colden has ended the two previous seasons at the Meet of Champions and will look to do the same in his final campaign at Bishop Eustace. He placed eighth at states last year with a time of 18:36 and was also the Crusaders’ top finisher at the Olympic Conference Championships, while also placing eighth at the Bob Kiessling sectional race. Senior Ryan Gaulrapp was the first Eustace runner to cross the finish line at sectionals as he placed sixth in 17:22, and will be counted on this fall as well. Junior Ethan Caprarola had top-20 showings at sectionals and states, and senior Arthur Wheeler is another key returner. Sophomore Alexander Dietz will look to crack the top seven.
OUTLOOK: The Crusaders placed second at sectionals in 2022 and went on to take second at states for the second year in a row. With all of their leading runners returning, the prospects for this fall are promising.
CAMDEN CATHOLIC
FIGHTING IRISH
RUNNERS TO WATCH: Camden Catholic brings back its top three runners from last year—Patrick McInerney, Seamus Bieg and Sean Leahy—so there is a strong foundation in place. McInerney, a senior, was the first Irish competitor to cross the finish line at all of the major races, including the Bob Kiessling Invitational (fifth), states (38th), the Camden County Championships (17th) and the Olympic Conference Championships (27th). He posted several times in the low-17 minute range and is primed for a big final season. Bieg, a sophomore, flashed a ton of potential as a rookie, highlighted by his 12th-place finish at the Kiessling meet, and Leahy, a junior, was not far behind as he took 16th at the same race. Junior Sean Alfaro and seniors John Ryan Connelly and Mark Armstrong also finished in the top 30 at the Kiessling sectional meet and are key contributors as well.
OUTLOOK: The Irish have a formidable top three and depth behind them, which should translate to solid showings at the championship meets.
CHEROKEE
CHIEFS
RUNNERS TO WATCH: Nick Kuenkel is coming off a fantastic junior season and is primed for big things in his senior campaign. He bounced back from an injury-plagued sophomore season to win Burlington County and sectional championships last fall, then took fifth at states in 16:08 and fourth at the Meet of Champions (MOC) in 15:41. Bobby Poplau is another talented senior who finished ninth at sectionals in 15:52, following top-10 showings at the county and Olympic Conference races. He placed 40th at states and 31st at the MOC as well. Junior Liam Tindall emerged as a key contributor as a sophomore, taking 10th at the county and conference meets and 23rd at sectionals. Anthony DiBatista, Ben Weiner and Enzo Corona are other juniors who showed potential, and additional runners to keep an eye on include seniors Luke Reistle and Andrew Free and sophomore Logan Bromley.
OUTLOOK: Last season was another sensational one for the Chiefs, who captured state, sectional, county and conference crowns and took third at the MOC. Several top runners graduated and will be missed, but Kuenkel and company are in store for more notable accomplishments in 2023.
CHERRY HILL EAST
COUGARS
RUNNERS TO WATCH: Senior Raine Guidarelli established himself as Cherry Hill East’s No. 1 runner as a junior and was especially impressive at South Jersey, Group 4 sectionals, where he clocked a 16:01 for 14th place. He also took eighth at the Olympic Conference Championships and 35th at states before running at the Meet of Champions. He’s part of a solid returning core that also includes juniors Nikhil Raman (13th at the conference race, 33rd at sectionals) and Brody Bogos (22nd in the conference, 40th at sectionals). Senior Noah Stanwyck is also expected to have an impact, while junior Brandon Lyons and senior Johnny Huang are among the key varsity newcomers moving up from JV.
OUTLOOK: The Cougars were runners-up at the conference meet, took fourth at sectionals and 11th at states in a successful 2022 season. They should again be a team to watch at those races this fall.
CHERRY HILL WEST
LIONS
RUNNERS TO WATCH: Cherry Hill West brings back its top two runners from last season, senior Dylan Breeze and sophomore Rex Takakjy, and welcomes in a sensational newcomer who is expected to make an immediate impact. Sophomore Will Nelson has won numerous 5Ks in the area, with a personal-best time under 17 minutes, and will aim for the Meet of Champions in his first scholastic season. Breeze and Takakjy were consistently in the 18-minute range last season, with Breeze being the first Lion to cross the finish line at sectionals and Takakjy taking the honor at the Camden County and Olympic Conference championship meets. They will look to push each other to new PRs this fall. Junior Bradley Bricker is another experienced runner who will help set the pace, while sophomore Christian Taylor is capable of making some noise at the big races as well. Vincenzo Eddy is another sophomore phenom capable of big things.
OUTLOOK: With Nelson and Eddy joining a solid returning core, it would not be surprising to see the Lions leave their mark at the championship meets.
CLEARVIEW
PIONEERS
RUNNERS TO WATCH: Senior Akshar Patel shaved significant time off his finishes at the big races last year, as he posted top-20 showings at the Gloucester County and Tri-County Conference meets and took 28th at sectionals, clocking in less than 18 minutes in each race. He will be in contention to take over as Clearview’s No. 1 runner along with junior Joe Dell’Aquilla, who was running well last fall before suffering an injury and bounced back with a strong track season in the spring. Sophomore Tyler Galtman showed promise as a rookie and has a bright future ahead of him, while key veterans include juniors Sun Daneil and Ethan Worst and senior Keith Baldosaro. Jaden Franks is another junior returner expected to contribute and several newcomers will aid the cause as well.
OUTLOOK: The Pioneers held their own at the championship meets in 2022, taking fourth in the county, fifth in the conference and sixth in South Jersey, Group 3. This is a consistent program that always seems to compete, and this year should be no different.
EASTERN
VIKINGS
RUNNERS TO WATCH: Junior Ryan Haefele is coming off a promising sophomore season and will look to lead the way for Eastern. He had a strong showing at the South Jersey, Group 4 meet, posting a time of 17:16 to cross the finish line first for the Vikings in 43rd place. Dayyan Shaikh is a key senior, and other returners hoping to run in the top seven are junior Nicholas Sirdashney and sophomores Justin Fox and Aiden Mueller. Senior Nick Lewellen is a new addition from the spring track team and should provide a boost as well.
OUTLOOK: With Haefele setting a fast pace, Eastern has the potential to be much improved in 2023.
HADDONFIELD
BULLDAWGS
RUNNERS TO WATCH: Haddonfield graduated a terrific senior class led by sectional and state champion George Andrus, so a new cast of stars will have to emerge. The good news is that there are plenty of candidates, including senior Matthew Sullivan, who clocked a 16:07 at sectionals to place eighth before finishing 16th at states and running a 17:52 at the Meet of Champions (MOC). Sophomore Ryan Gibson could challenge Sullivan for the top spot after an excellent rookie season in which he took eighth at the Camden County Championships, 14th at the Colonial Conference Championships, 21st at sectionals and 25th at states. Senior Liam Dougherty will be in the mix as well; he missed last cross country season with an injury but rebounded with a strong track campaign in the spring, running 4:29 in the 1600. Junior Bennett Wright is another key returner who ran 16:36 at sectionals for 16th and took 32nd at states before posting a 17:27 at the MOC. Senior Reid Gervasi and sophomore Luke Andresen both had top-20 performances at the county and conference races, and other returners expected to have an impact are senior Grey Sullivan, juniors Case Hurly and Linus Kucer, and sophomores Benjamin Andrus and Brandon Stoner.
OUTLOOK: The Bulldawgs reeled off their 19th consecutive sectional crown, went on to capture the state championship and took sixth at the MOC in 2022. They have some big shoes to fill but a deep roster of runners who are hungry to continue the program’s winning tradition.
KINGSWAY
DRAGONS
RUNNERS TO WATCH: Kingsway will be looking for a new No. 1 runner this year following the graduation of its lone state qualifier, Cesar Pedro, and senior Ryland Mishura is one of the leading contenders for the job. He clocked a 17:03 at sectionals to place 38th, and also broke 18 minutes to take 16th at the Gloucester County Championships and 26th at the Tri-County Conference Showcase. Mishura’s goal for his final season will be cracking the top 10 at those races. Junior Anthony Messina and senior Thomas Hover each crossed the finish line in under 18 minutes at sectionals, and had solid showings at the county and conference races as well. Sophomore Michael Driscoll—the conference JV champion as a rookie—hopes to join the top seven.
OUTLOOK: After taking third in the county, fourth in the conference and eighth at sectionals, the Dragons expect to remain competitive at the major meets.
LENAPE
INDIANS
RUNNERS TO WATCH: Lenape had a senior-laden team last year and will look for new leaders to emerge this fall. The lone varsity returner is senior Noah White, who will be counted on during batch meets and championship races as he aims to lower his times throughout the year and start to reach his peak by mid-October. Several JV runners also hope to contribute on varsity, including senior Lucas Minato and juniors Cooper McDonald, Hector Rodrigo and Rayyan Ahmed.
OUTLOOK: Lenape had strong performances at all of the big races last year, placing second in the county, fifth in the conference, third at sectionals and eighth at states. It will be difficult to stay at that level with so many new faces in the lineup, but the Indians’ goal is to build a strong foundation for the future.
MOORESTOWN
QUAKERS
RUNNERS TO WATCH: Peter Simpson’s impressive freshman season included a ninth-place finish at sectionals with a time of 16:10, and he went on to take 25th at states in 17:14. He also placed ninth at the Olympic Conference Championships and 16th at the Burlington County Open, raising expectations for his sophomore year and beyond. Simpson will be joined at the front of the pack by senior Hari Bezwada, who consistently posted times in the 18-minute range, such as his 18:10 at sectionals. Senior Charles Oatway is a dependable competitor as well and the only other varsity returner. JV runners hoping to contribute are seniors Coriell Donnan and Rudy Thyrum and sophomore Shaymus Derer.
OUTLOOK: The Quakers were right in the mix at most of the big races last year, taking fifth in the county and at sectionals to go with a sixth in the conference and a 19th at states. If the lineup develops behind Simpson, Bezwada and Oatway, they should stay competitive.
MOORESTOWN FRIENDS
FOXES
RUNNERS TO WATCH: Isaac Linden skyrocketed to the front of the pack for Moorestown Friends as a sophomore and had a season to remember. He placed fifth at states with a time of 18:30, earning a trip to the Meet of Champions, where he clocked an 18:29. He also took fifth at the Friends Schools League Championships and seventh at the Bob Kiessling Invitational, and is primed for a huge junior campaign. Mason Levens is another junior to keep an eye on; he took 14th at the league meet, 24th at sectionals and 32nd at states. Linden and Levens will serve as captains. Sophomore Winston Nusom showed promise throughout his rookie season and will likely round out the top three for the Foxes. There is a lot of depth behind them too, with sophomores Allan Wang, Jason Yousef and Drew Matta and junior Andrew Zhou all expected to contribute.
OUTLOOK: The Foxes hope to contend in their final year in the Friends Schools League and make some noise at the major meets as well.
PAUL VI
EAGLES
RUNNERS TO WATCH: Paul VI brings back one of the top runners in the area in senior Will Mrozinski, who won one major race as a junior and was in contention at several others. He clocked a 15:59 to take first at the Bob Kiessling Invitational sectional meet and moved on to states, where he placed 14th in 16:32, 14 spots better than the year before. Mrozinski, who also took second at the Camden County Championships and fifth at the Olympic Conference Championships, posted a time of 17:17 at the Meet of Champions. Junior Christian Napoli ran an 18:07 for 18th place at sectionals and competed at states, while seniors Jack Mesner, Matthew Miller and Jonathan Walker and junior Nicholas Salamone also has solid showings at sectionals. Junior Sean Alemi and sophomores Hayden Ciullo and Collin Conway round out the main core, but the deep roster includes several other runners who could make an impact.
OUTLOOK: The Eagles took first at the Kiessling Invitational and seventh at states following third-place finishes at the county and conference races. Mrozinski will look to add a few more firsts to his collection and the team will follow his lead.
SENECA
GOLDEN EAGLES
RUNNERS TO WATCH: Although Seneca graduated its No. 1 runner from the past two years—Justin Schmied—senior Caleb Graeber should be able to smoothly slide into the spot. He was usually around the 18-minute range as a junior, including sectionals, where he placed 38th in South Jersey, Group 2. The next step for Graeber is finding a way to contend at the big meets. Sophomore Dominic Lera held his own as a rookie and will look for the improvement to continue in his second season of varsity cross country. Juniors Pat Griffin and Connor McCafferty are expected to be mainstays in the top seven, and other potential contributors are sophomore Sean George and junior Angelo Mejia-Ranno.
OUTLOOK: The Golden Eagles have a promising nucleus back and will look to move up a few notches at the Burlington County, Olympic Conference and sectional races.
SHAWNEE
RENEGADES
RUNNERS TO WATCH: Senior Ryan Kaczur consistently turns in strong performances at the major races and will be a top competitor for Shawnee once again this fall. Last year, he placed in the top 15 at the Burlington County Open, Olympic Conference Championships and sectionals, where he clocked a 16:36 to take 14th in South Jersey, Group 3. Eli Mackey is another senior at the front of the pack; he was the first Renegade to cross the finish line at the county open (ninth) and states (33rd). Sophomore Yanni Ekatomatis and junior Noah Stapleton both placed in the top 30 at the county and sectional meets, and junior Elias Knoll is expected to round out the top five after a solid track season followed by more progress this summer. Other key veterans are junior Finnegan Bracken and senior Jack Nguyen.
OUTLOOK: Shawnee was in contention at several big races in 2022, taking fourth at both the county and conference meets and third at sectionals. With most of the Renegades’ leading runners back, they should be in the mix again.
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP
MINUTEMEN
RUNNERS TO WATCH: Junior Hunter Bostwick is coming off a superb sophomore season that included a runner-up finish at the Tri-County Conference Showcase with a time of 16:13. He also clocked a 16:38 to take fourth at the Gloucester County Championships and a 16:12 at sectionals to place 16th, and is eager to see what he can accomplish as an upperclassman. Senior Aaron Kolosowsky is another top veteran who finished fifth at the conference meet in 16:40 and ninth at the county race in 17:12. He went on to post a time of 16:59 at sectionals, which was good for 37th place. Senior Daniel Torres, a former soccer player, is running cross country for the first time after running 4:30 in the 1600 during track season. He will push for a top three spot.
Seniors Patrick Lantt and Evan Bongard turned in solid showings at the big races as well, and Adrian Gonzalez is another senior pushing for the top seven.
OUTLOOK: The Minutemen were Tri-County Showcase champions in their first year in the conference and also took second in the county and sixth at sectionals. Bostwick should be in contention for one or more individual titles this fall and the team will be in the conversation at the major races as well.
