Camden Catholic Fighting Irish
Players to watch:
Outside hitter Sofia Granieri has been a difference-maker for Camden Catholic both offensively and defensively the past few years and is looking forward to a strong senior season. As a junior, she filled up the stat sheet with a team-high 83 kills, 124 service points and 48 aces to go with 81 digs on her way to all-conference second-team recognition. Senior outside hitter Nicole Robertson (58 kills, 41 digs) and junior middle blocker Sophia Palumbo (34 kills, 12 blocks, 22 aces) are other key pieces of the rotation. Seniors Reya Taylor and Charlotte Hibbs are both talented setters and combined for nearly 300 assists while providing solid serves as well. Senior Jessie Espino contributed as a defensive specialist and may take over as the starting libero. Other returners looking to make an impact are seniors Julia Schaffer and Rebecca Madorno and juniors Faith Gallagher and Emma Johnson.

Outlook: The Irish consistently reach double digits in wins and last year was no different as they rebounded from a COVID-shortened season to go 15-7 and claim the Olympic Conference National Division title. The pieces are in place for another successful campaign.

Cherokee Chiefs
Players to watch:
Senior outside hitter Brooke O’Prandy has been a varsity contributor since her freshman year and emerged as one of the best players in South Jersey last season. She totaled 216 kills, 84 digs and 21 aces to make the all-conference first team. She forms a nice connection with junior setter Anna Hunter, who had 311 assists to go with 93 digs, 17 kills and 60 aces as a sophomore in her first season as the varsity starter. She was rewarded with all-conference second-team honors. Senior opposite/middle blocker Gabby Recinto was named Cherokee’s most improved player last year. She is an absolute terror at the net for opposing hitters, as she recorded 26 blocks along with 55 kills. Senior opposite Beatrix Nguyen and junior outside hitter Marissa Strauss also contribute offensively, and returning defensive specialists are junior Lauren Owings and seniors Cassidy Klein and Caroline Lenart. Several members of Cherokee’s successful JV and freshman teams could move into the rotation as well.

Outlook: Last season was somewhat of a rebuilding season for the Chiefs as they finished 8-16, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see them return to their winning ways with O’Prandy leading the way.

Cherry Hill East Cougars
Players to watch:
Cherry Hill East graduated its two leaders in kills but has several talented hitters capable of getting hot and taking over a game at any time. That includes junior opposite/outside hitter Alaina Farber (55 kills, 14 blocks) and senior middle blocker Lily Thomas (42 kills, 35 blocks). Senior outside hitter Leah Pintel and her sister, sophomore outside hitter Sophie Pintel, are the latest members of their family to shine in the program and will also be forces in the front row. Junior Elena Decker and sophomore Aubree Mon are experienced setters who both started at times last season. Senior Joelle Kang and junior Lydia Ding contributed in the back row and are expected to fill the shoes of four-year starting libero Grace Ehret. Juniors Stav Butbol and Kaylee Greer could be in line for more playing time as well.

Outlook: Coming off an 18-6 season that included a berth in the sectional quarterfinals and a second-place finish in the Olympic American, the Cougars expect to contend in the division once again.

Clearview Pioneers
Players to watch:
Clearview returns a solid core led by senior Karissa Herman and junior Avery Roberts. Herman has been the starter at libero since her sophomore season and contributes in multiple ways, as evidenced by her stat sheet from last year. She accumulated 79 digs, 25 assists, 39 aces and 17 kills. Roberts, an outside hitter, has been one of the Pioneers’ best offensive weapons since she was a freshman. She recorded 46 kills, 46 digs and 29 aces as a sophomore and should take her game up a notch as an upperclassman. Senior defensive specialist Katherine Thorn and senior middle blocker Lauren Reiling are the other returners with the most experience and will help guide the newcomers. Clearview must break in a new setter and that will be crucial as the season approaches. Other players hoping to earn time are seniors Maddy Clark and Tara Gall, juniors Natalie Brauchle and Dakota Ellixson and sophomore Daniella Ortiz.

Outlook: The Pioneers have posted back-to-back winning seasons with a playoff victory after going 12-9 last fall. They have a chance to continue the streak if the rest of the lineup develops quickly behind Herman and Roberts.

Eastern Vikings
Players to watch:
The top three leaders in kills from last year all graduated, so Eastern will need a new offensive force to emerge, and junior Kaitlyn Nyce is a good candidate for the role. She recorded 25 kills as a sophomore and appears ready to take her game up a notch. Juniors Rebecca Forman and Taylor McGann and senior Emma Parkeer will also make their presence felt both offensively and defensively in the front row. Senior Victoria Fries is a talented setter who will orchestrate the attack and senior Joanna Shin is another top returner who led the team in aces. Senior Tanya Garneau and juniors Bella Ang, Sydney Nguyen, Sera Wong and Isa Yumiseba will seek out bigger roles as well.

Outlook: After finishing with an 8-14 record in 2021, the Vikings’ goal is to get closer to the .500 mark and qualify for the playoffs.

Gloucester Catholic Rams
Players to watch:
Seniors Gena Driscoll and Delaney McEneaney are both coming off strong seasons and will lead the way for Gloucester Catholic this fall. Driscoll moved into the role of libero last year and collected an astonishing 423 digs, which led the Tri-County Conference by almost 150. McEneaney took over as the starting setter and registered 177 assists and 22 aces. Senior middle blocker/outside hitter Ella Kain could become the go-to offensive spark after totaling 25 kills, 23 aces and 52 digs. Sophomore Ava Godby saw time at setter as a rookie and can also shift to outside hitter when needed. Junior Zoe DeAngelis is another versatile veteran, while seniors Alexa McCann and Olivia McCann and junior Emily Leahy are returning defensive specialists. Sophomore Katherine Lange is a newcomer who is expected to make an immediate impact. She can play in the back row and at the net and has a fantastic serve. Senior Emma Kappre and juniors Claire Tamagli and Isabella Teti will also push for playing time, along with one or more freshmen.

Outlook: The Rams have good senior leadership and will look to improve upon last year’s 7-14 record.

Kingsway Dragons
Players to watch:
Kingsway had a young squad in 2021 and many of those players gained valuable experience that should pay off this fall. Three sophomores played significant roles as rookies, including middle blocker Kassadi Avent, who led the team with 81 kills to go with 12 blocks and 36 aces. Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Elliott had 35 kills and 37 aces and sophomore setter Macie Ferla added 37 assists and 11 aces. Other key returners are senior middle blocker Camryn O’Leary, senior outside hitter Kaitlyn Vannelli and junior defensive specialist Alana Oman, who will provide steady play on the court along with leadership. Junior Grace Bowman is a varsity newcomer to keep an eye on.

Outlook: Even in a rebuilding season, the Dragons still managed to stay competitive in most of their games and finished with a 10-11 record. They will aim for a winning campaign in 2022.

Lenape Indians
Players to watch:
Lenape brings back a talented nucleus led by junior outside hitter Bria Morgan, a varsity standout since her freshman year. She had 78 kills, 97 digs and 18 aces as a sophomore and should only get better as an upperclassman. Seniors Mallory Blackburn (49 kills) and Samantha Vanderveen (43 kills) are other offensive threats and junior outside hitter Abigail Oswari showed potential as a sophomore. The Indians have two capable setters in junior Layla Flanigan and senior Lana Minato, who will efficiently direct the offense. A new libero will have to emerge to replace all-conference selection Maya Burgos, who graduated.

Outlook: The Indians went 11-9 in 2021 for their fifth straight winning season. With so many key players returning, the streak should continue.

Moorestown Quakers
Players to watch:
Three tough competitors from the front row are back to lead Moorestown. Senior outside hitter Taylor Pitts was third on the team with 79 kills and added 11 blocks, 116 digs and 16 aces, and senior middle blocker Lilly Clark enjoyed a breakout season with 58 kills, 17 blocks and 30 aces. The third member of the group is senior middle blocker Jenna Castrati, who recorded 46 kills and 22 digs. There is also depth up front thanks to veterans like seniors Elsa Law and Autumn Rogers, junior Marissa Ortiz and sophomore Bethany Trzeciak, who was a solid contributor in the middle as a rookie. Senior Gabby Baer is a key returner at libero and senior Isabel Trzeciak will look to take over as the starting setter, with sophomore Rima Takla also in the mix at the position.

Outlook: The Quakers are coming off an impressive 18-8 season that ended in the sectional semifinals. There are a few important spots to fill but they have high hopes for another solid run under new head coach Kristin Hanratty. She replaces Scott Atkinson, the longtime leader of the program who spent 25 years at Moorestown.

Paul VI Eagles
Players to watch:
Although Paul VI graduated all-state outside hitter Sadie Arasim, there is still plenty of talent coming back from the first state championship team in program history. Leading the way is senior middle blocker Zharia Harris-Waddy, an all-conference first-team selection who filled the stat sheet with 139 kills, 46 blocks, 57 aces and 44 digs. Her intimidating presence at the net strikes fear into opponents. The Eagles also have a pair of outstanding senior setters in Lauren Vincenti and Ella Pobre, who each collected more than 300 assists. Vincenti also had 88 digs on her way to all-conference first-team recognition, and Pobre led Paul VI with 77 aces to earn all-conference second-team honors. They have a host of talented hitters to set, including junior Emily Ezeiruaku on the outside. She had 168 kills, 123 digs and 31 aces and made the all-conference second team. Senior middle Ogonna Ngene—who is attempting to return from a torn ACL suffered in last year’s playoffs—and senior outside hitter Paris Lott are other big contributors in the front row. Senior libero Meggan Bischoff paced the Eagles with 279 digs and added 62 aces and was rewarded with all-conference second-team accolades.

Outlook: Last season was full of special moments for the Eagles, who went 28-3, rallied to beat perennial power Immaculate Heart for the Non-Public A state title and reached the Tournament of Champions final before falling to Williamstown. Expectations remain high and back-to-back state crowns are certainly in play as a challenging schedule should have Paul VI battle-tested for the playoffs.

Seneca Golden Eagles
Players to watch:
Senior middle blocker Calissa Araujo emerged as a key offensive and defensive force for Seneca last year and is primed for a big final season. She tied for the team lead in kills, was first in blocks and third in service points. Senior Riley Breen is another experienced middle and senior Cassandra Dilks is a talented outside hitter. Sophomore Grace Yaeger made an immediate impact at libero and led the Golden Eagles with more than 100 digs, while senior defensive specialist Jazmyn Cruz is also an important player in the back row. Senior Hannah Cutts saw varsity time at setter and will look to hold down the job on a full-time basis. Senior Lily Hardoon is another returner looking to contribute.

Outlook: Seneca’s 9-12 season last fall included a playoff win over Oakcrest on the road. They have the potential to return to the postseason and contend for a winning record.

Shawnee Renegades
Players to watch:
Shawnee graduated an outstanding player in outside hitter Mia Mosicki as well as its two other leaders in kills, so a new go-to offensive threat will have to emerge. Senior middle blocker Kali Schad will be asked to increase her kills to go with her strong blocking skills. Junior Julia Barnett will also look to take her game up a notch as she gets more opportunities at the varsity level. Senior Adaline Dymkowski is an experienced setter who will direct the offense as she settles into the starting job. Senior Madison Thornton is a returning defensive specialist who is also a talented server, and junior Hayley Yeager will also look to contribute. Shawnee is also looking for seniors Isabella Christianson and Rebecca Uhl to add their leadership and strong play to the program.

Outlook: The Renegades went 15-5 with a playoff win over rival Lenape last fall to cap a memorable stretch for the team. This season they will be focused on developing the young talent while giving each opponent a hard-fought game.

Washington Township Minutemaids
Players to watch:
In her first two seasons of high school volleyball, Bryn Bautista has established herself as one of the best all-around players in the area. The junior outside hitter not only led Washington Township with 238 kills as a sophomore, but she also shined defensively and with her serve. She finished with 227 digs, 147 service points and 50 aces, and it will be exciting to see what she can accomplish as an upperclassman. There is plenty of talent surrounding Bautista too, including senior middle blocker Isabella Dulude (94 kills, 27 blocks, 23 aces) and senior outside hitter Victoria Capone (63 kills). Junior Nina Cleary is the conductor, as she returns for her third season as the starting setter. She recorded 462 assists, 118 digs and 50 aces as a sophomore. Junior McKenna Quinn is an experienced libero and will look to move into the starting lineup. Several other veterans will push for playing time, including seniors Jessica D’Orazio and Alexis Thompson. Juniors MaKenna Hagerty, Ciana Bonatara and Montana Malinowski are also in the mix.

Outlook: The Minutemaids’ 21-8 season included the Olympic American title and berths in the Gloucester County Tournament final and the sectional semifinals, where they ran into eventual Tournament of Champions winner Williamstown both times. With so many top players back in the fold, this is shaping up as another year full of promise.
