Bishop Eustace Crusaders
Players to watch:
Bishop Eustace brings back four starters, including two who have extensive singles experience in senior Ava Kaloustian and junior Laurel Montuori. Kaloustian spent about half of her junior season in the No. 1 spot and the other half at No. 2, and she also competed in a handful of matches at first singles as a sophomore. She hopes to apply the lessons she learned and show her progress as a player in her final campaign. Montuori won a combined five matches at second and third singles last year after alternating between the first and second positions as a freshman. She should continue to get better as an upperclassman. Seniors Ella Axelson and Tess Standring were partners at second doubles last year and earned several important wins during team matches. They also reached the semifinals in the National Division at the Olympic Conference Tournament. They will have an impact somewhere in the lineup. Juniors Michelle Lu and Ava Brenza could also battle for starting roles after playing JV in 2021.

Outlook: The Crusaders made strides as a program and compiled a 6-7 record last fall, a five-win improvement from the year before. They hope to stay competitive under new head coach Andrew Ennis.

Cherokee Chiefs
Players to watch:
Cherokee is happy to welcome back most of its starting lineup, including junior first singles Shruti Mannan, who has established herself as one of the premier players in South Jersey in her first two scholastic seasons. She went 14-2 during team matches last year and reached the semifinals at both the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships (SJIC) and the Olympic Conference American Division Tournament. Senior second singles Ava Ronning and senior third singles Shruti Mandrekar also return after starting at those spots for the past two years. Ronning reached the second singles semifinals at the Burlington County Open and the round of 16 at the SJIC, while Mandrekar compiled a 9-7 record during team matches. Senior Samiya Khan has been a starter at doubles the past two seasons and played No. 1 with two different partners in 2021. Senior Chloe Fallon has also been in the starting lineup for two years in a row, and other returners with varsity doubles experience are senior Ariana Lepore and junior Allison Larkin. Sophomore Fariha Khan could also challenge for spots.

Outlook: The Chiefs went 8-8 and won a playoff match last fall before their postseason run ended in the sectional quarterfinals. An experienced group could carry them even further this season, and Mannan should be in contention at the big individual tournaments as well.

Cherry Hill East Cougars
Players to watch:
Cherry Hill East only returns three starters but one of them is junior Sophia Liu, who has played first singles each of the past two seasons. She reached the round of 16 at the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships and is looking to take the next step and get into contention at the major tournaments. Senior Julia Chan is another key veteran who ended last year at first doubles but also has singles experience. She will look to hold down the No. 2 spot behind Liu. Junior Anika Gupta will also play an important role after compiling a 7-4-1 record in team matches, mostly at second doubles. Junior Valerie Wang, who reached the B doubles final at the SJIC, also hopes to vie for a position in the starting lineup.

Outlook: The Cougars went 12-3 in 2021 and reached the sectional final for the fourth year in a row but had their streak of three straight titles snapped with a 3-2 loss to Shawnee. They have some important spots to fill but expect to continue playing at a high level.

Cherry Hill West Lions
Players to watch:
Cherry Hill West was young and inexperienced last year, with three freshmen and a sophomore in the lineup, but those youngsters will look to build on the promise they showed. Leading that group is sophomore Hannah Azar, who seized the first singles job as a rookie and was thrown to the fire against some of the top competition in the area. She forms a solid one-two punch at the top of the lineup with senior Cynthia Chang, a four-year starter who played mostly second singles as a junior. Chang made the semifinals at the Camden County Championships. Gail Santos is another senior returner who bounced between third singles and first doubles. Junior Gabriella Creighton started at first doubles for most of the season, while sophomores Zahra Karimi and Hana Kolenovic were doubles contributors as rookies. Seniors Ayen Aldana, Annika Brodie and A’myah Robinson and sophomore Jaye Chatman also have doubles experience. Freshmen Lauren Stoltzfus and Nhi Nguyen are among the 15 newcomers on the roster and will look to play a role on varsity right away.

Outlook: The Lions’ hard work has not resulted in favorable outcomes in recent seasons, but things could be looking up with so many returning players on the roster.

Clearview Pioneers
Players to watch:
Clearview said goodbye to one of the program’s all-time best players, two-time Gloucester County champion Carlee Cristella, but welcomes back five starters, including one who is ready to take over Cristella’s spot at first singles. Sophomore Sarah Crawford grabbed hold of the No. 2 singles role as a rookie and was nearly perfect during team matches, reeling off a 16-1 record. She also took third at the Gloucester County Tournament and won a match at the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships. Another key returner is senior Emily Miscioscia, a four-year starter who went 16-3 as a junior. Senior Megan McLoughlin could also vie for a singles spot. She played first doubles last year and won a Gloucester County title while posting a 17-2 record in team matches. Seniors McKenzie McDowell and Noelle Gregg are the other returning starters. They were partners at second doubles and went 13-2 together in that role.

Outlook: Not many programs can graduate a player the caliber of Cristella and still enter the season with lofty goals, but the Pioneers are in that rare position. They have put together three straight undefeated seasons in the Tri-County Royal and went 17-2 overall last year, reaching the sectional semifinals. Another successful season looks like a safe bet.

Eastern Vikings
Players to watch:
Magha Kumar made the leap from first doubles as a rookie to first singles as a sophomore, and she gained valuable experience going against the best of the best in the area. It should pay off this fall for Kumar, who reached the round of 16 at the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships. Two other starters return, and both had successful doubles seasons. Senior Violet Riquelme was part of the No. 1 duo and compiled an 11-3 record during team matches. Aastha Kulkarni, another senior, competed at second doubles as a junior and posted an 8-6 record. Both could be ready to move into a singles position. Eastern will need newcomers to emerge and fill out the rest of the lineup.

Outlook: The Vikings, who are coming off a 9-8 season that included a playoff victory, always seem to hold their own against a challenging schedule. There are a lot of spots to fill but the returners will be expected to carry the program forward.

Gloucester Catholic Rams
Players to watch:
Senior Macie Nugent is a multi-sport athlete a Gloucester Catholic, and her competitive spirit and natural ability are major plusses for the tennis team. She has played third singles each of the past two seasons and could be ready to move into the No. 1 spot. Senior Sam Salvatore and junior Emily Mondel are other returners who played first doubles together. One or both of them could move into a singles position. Junior Olivia Woodring saw time at second doubles and will also be in the mix.

Outlook: The Rams showed some promise last year and hope to continue moving forward this fall under a new head coach, who had yet to be named as of press time.

Haddonfield Bulldawgs
Players to watch:
Haddonfield brings back six of seven starters from a year ago, all of whom were named to the all-Group 2 first team by the South Jersey Tennis Coaches Association. Leading the way is senior Sammy Sirover, who is expected to return to the first singles spot. In her first season at No. 1, she went 24-11, was the Colonial Conference singles champion, finished second at the Camden County Tournament and qualified for the state singles tournament. Lucinda Andrewes is another key senior who went 26-5 at second singles and was the conference runner-up behind Sirover. Sophomore Evie York seized the third singles position as a rookie and responded with a solid season, posting a 20-11 record. Seniors Ava Grookett and Tina Tian had a successful season at first doubles, as they claimed the conference and county titles and competed in the state doubles tournament. The final returning starter is sophomore Eliza Gordon, who went 21-8 at second doubles. Other returners who saw varsity time or contributed to Haddonfield’s 16-3 JV team are seniors Julia Hart, Brynn Durham, Ria Khanna and Lizzie Dunn and juniors Emily Turnage, Abby Cutter, Kendall Herckner and Chloe Kamp. They will all contend for a spot along with promising freshman Mia Swiecicki, who enters high school with tournament experience.

Outlook: The Bulldawgs extended their streak of consecutive sectional championships to an even 20 last year on their way to an 18-7 final record. With most of the roster returning, their dominance should continue.

Kingsway Dragons
Players to watch:
Junior Ryan Finlaw has been a starter since her freshman year and made the jump from second doubles to second singles last season. Now she will look to take over the No. 1 spot and become the leader for Kingsway. Senior Maddie Malesich is another key returner who played third singles a year ago. Junior Annabelle Williams competed at first doubles and posted an 8-6 record during team matches. Seniors Francesca Solari and Cali Volpe and junior Margaret Shableski also saw varsity time and could be in line for bigger roles.

Outlook: The Dragons compiled a 6-10 record last year and were competitive in just about every match. They hope to contend for a winning season with some new faces in the lineup.

Lenape Indians
Players to watch:
Lenape graduated most of its starting lineup but is pleased to bring back its first two singles players, including one of the toughest competitors in the area. Senior Rhea Sethi has played No. 1 since she was a freshman and is looking to end her remarkable career on a high note. Last year she went 12-4 in team matches, reached the final at both the Burlington County Open and Olympic Conference American Division Tournament, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships. Junior Bella Cao is another talented returner who enters her third season at No. 2 singles. She earned 12 wins during team matches and made a run to the round of 16 at the SJIC. Senior Kaitlyn King, a standout basketball player at Lenape, also puts her athleticism to good use on the tennis court. She went 11-6 playing mostly at first doubles and could move into a singles position. Senior Anushka Gangupanthulu is hoping to crack the starting lineup as well.

Outlook: The Indians’ 12-5 season featured a berth in the sectional semifinals, where they dropped a tough 3-2 loss to rival Cherry Hill East. If they can fill out the lineup behind Sethi, Cao and King, another successful campaign is on the horizon.

Moorestown Quakers
Players to watch:
Moorestown was hit hard by graduation, with five of its regular starters moving on. The key returners are junior Erica Zhang and senior Priya Panganamamula, who played second doubles together and posted an impressive 16-2 record in team matches. They also upset their teammates, Moorestown’s first doubles team, in the final to win the South Jersey Interscholastic Tournament, and captured the second doubles crown at the Burlington County Open. Zhang and Panganamamula will be strong candidates to move into singles spots and lead the Quakers this fall. Alana Lee is one of several talented freshmen joining the program, and with her experience in private training and tournament settings, she has a chance to challenge for the No. 1 singles spot. Senior Isabella Moccia contributed at doubles and singles when called upon last year and will also look to earn a starting job. Juniors Emma Rabenou, Gabrielle Khusid and Eva Hinke all played well in their limited varsity opportunities and will also be counted on this fall, along with Sasha Krachman, who was injured most of last year but is a big hitter and a player to keep an eye on.

Outlook: The Quakers went 17-7 and came close to their fourth straight sectional title before dropping a tough 3-2 match to Mainland in the final last year. A lot of the names will be different this season but the expectations will remain the same for one of the premier programs in South Jersey.

Moorestown Friends Foxes
Players to watch:
It’s the dawn of a new day at Moorestown Friends, as nine seniors graduated from last year’s team, including one of the best players in program history and the South Jersey Player of the Year, Bella Pescatore. Longtime coach Mike Bodary also stepped down, so this year’s squad will certainly have a different look. The only two returners are senior Julia Tourtellotte and junior Avani Verma, who both started at doubles and were often paired up together. Tourtellotte compiled a 12-6 record in team matches, while Verma went 9-5 and reached the quarterfinals of the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships with another partner. Verma also filled in at singles on occasion and could be ready to move into the No. 1 spot. The rest of the lineup will be filled out by varsity newcomers.

Outlook: The Foxes captured the program’s 10th sectional title and advanced to the state final in a 17-6 season last fall. It will be hard to reach those levels with so many new faces in the lineup, but the winning tradition should continue under new head coach Kathleen Gonzalez, who also leads the boys tennis team at Moorestown Friends.

Paul VI Eagles
Players to watch:
Senior Angelina Meduri emerged as the No. 2 singles player for Paul VI last year and now will be eyeing the top spot in her final season. She is one of four returning starters, including junior Hailey Rowan, a starter since her freshman year who played third singles in 2021. Three sophomores are also back and trying to build on promising rookie seasons. Natalya Slonis went 5-7 playing mostly at first doubles and Hannah Rowan compiled an 8-4 record at second doubles. Caroline Woodside also shined in her opportunities and should be ready for a full-time starting role. Junior Ashley Batejan spent much of last season at third doubles and is in line for a starting job, and freshman Annabelle Salvano should also be in the varsity mix.

Outlook: The Eagles went 4-10 last fall and were competitive in most of their losses. With a few veteran leaders and the talented youngsters, they have a solid mix for 2022.

Seneca Golden Eagles
Players to watch:
Seneca suffered big losses to graduation, with five starters bidding farewell. One of the returners is junior Kim Wash, who had a breakout season as a sophomore at second singles. She posted an 11-6 record and will be in line to move into the No. 1 spot. Junior Jemma Dybus is also back after competing at second doubles and compiling a 7-7 record. She will likely move into a singles position. Wash and Dybus, along with returning third doubles player Bella Giancoli, will look to help the newcomers get adjusted to varsity tennis as they fill in the lineup behind them.

Outlook: The Golden Eagles were competitive as always last year, posting a 9-9 record and collecting a playoff win. It will be interesting to see if they can still give opponents a tough match with a host of new faces in the lineup.

Shawnee Renegades
Players to watch:
A special senior class that helped put Shawnee tennis on the map will look to go out on top this year. Leading the way is senior Samantha Tepes, who has played No. 1 singles since her freshman year and owns more than 50 career wins. She went 16-2 in team matches as a junior and claimed her second Olympic Conference American Division title. The Renegades also bring back their other two singles starters. Junior Natasha Sharnoff has played No. 2 each of her first two years and went 15-3 last season, reaching the round of 32 at the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships. Senior Maya Doshi has been a fixture at third singles and was stellar last year, reeling off a 17-1 record. The other returning starters are senior Kalena Gatesman and sophomore Divya Prajapati, who teamed up at second doubles and won the Olympic Conference title.

Outlook: Last season was one to remember for the Renegades, who went 17-1 and captured the South Jersey, Group 4 title for their first sectional championship since 1979. Their only loss came to Westfield in the state final. With five starters back, Shawnee will aim for a repeat as it breaks in brand-new courts at the school. Tepes will also be a player to watch at the big tournaments.

Washington Township Minutemaids
Players to watch:
Five starters graduated so Washington Township will be working hard in the preseason to establish a new lineup. One of the key returners is junior Christina Baldosaro, who emerged as a starter as a sophomore and put together a solid season at first doubles. She posted a 7-7 record and should be ready to take her game to the next level as a singles player. Senior Abby Brown is another returning starter who competed at second doubles and will fill a role either at singles or doubles. Sophomore Delaney Schwartz and juniors Lauren Stanger and Riley Borkowski are promising newcomers who

Outlook: The Minutemaids posted a 6-9 record in their final season in the Olympic Conference. The bus trips will get much shorter in the Tri-County Conference and they hope to be competitive against the likes of Clearview, Kingsway, GCIT and Williamstown.
