GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Preview & schedule

by Staff

Bishop Eustace Crusaders
Runners to watch:
Arianna Cane has been an impact runner for Bishop Eustace since her freshman year and is looking to end her career with a memorable senior season. As a junior, she placed second in Non-Public B at the state championships, clocking a 20:44, and went on to cut 10 seconds off that time at the Meet of Champions (MOC). She also placed fifth at the Bob Kiessling Invitational in 20:05 and 11th at the Olympic Conference Championships in 19:43. Senior Elena Cicchini is the perfect training partner for Cane as she usually crosses the finish line just a few strides behind her. Cicchini placed third at states to earn a trip to the MOC, and she also took eighth at the Kiessling meet and 20th at the conference race. Junior Anya Kazemi is another key returner who had top-20 finishes at the Kiessling Invitational and states, and junior Amelia Ingersoll was right behind her in both races. Senior Charlotte Faulk and sophomore Donna Presenza round out a strong core.

Outlook: Cane and Cicchini should be contenders at the major meets and that will help keep the Crusaders in the mix in the team standings.

Camden Catholic Fighting Irish
Runners to watch:
Camden Catholic brings back a talented nucleus led by its top two runners from last fall: senior Casey Bednarek and sophomore Nilaa Ponnappan. Bednarek has been running at the front of the pack since she was a sophomore and was the leading finisher for the Irish last year at most of the big races. She placed sixth at the Camden County Championships in 21:59, 10th at the Olympic Conference Championships in 19:41 and 25th at states in 21:02. She also clocked a 20:58 at the Bob Kiessling Invitational for 13th, six places behind Ponnappan. The rookie had a dazzling debut, as she also took seventh in the county, 12th in the conference and 26th at states. Senior Leah Clear missed most of the major meets but is another key veteran along with juniors Mary Picciano and Briana Deiwert. Winnie Wang, Carlie Dunne, Caitlin Alfaro and Genevieve McMullen add senior leadership, while sophomore Olivia Mancuso also hopes to contribute.

Outlook: The Irish had strong showings at the county and conference meets in 2021, placing in the top five at both, and finished around the middle of the pack in 11th at states. With most of the top seven back, including the duo of Bednarek and Ponnappan, hopes are high for 2022, and coach Joe Murtin calls this the most talented group he’s had in nine years at the helm.

Cherokee Chiefs
Runners to watch:
No. 1 runner Nikki Clifford has taken her talents to the University of Oklahoma, but Cherokee is happy to welcome back five of its top seven from a special 2021 team. That includes junior Olivia Parkinson, who is coming off a breakout sophomore campaign in which she placed second at sectionals in 18:53, second at the Olympic Conference Championships in 18:48 and third at the Burlington County Open in 19:15. She also finished 12th at states and 44th at the Meet of Champions. Senior Kelsey Niglio will challenge Parkinson for the top spot after placing in the top 10 at the sectional, conference and county races, breaking 20 minutes each time. She took 19th at states and 35th at the MOC. Junior Kerry O’Day was yet another Cherokee runner finishing in the top at the sectional, conference and county meets, while sophomore Megan Niglio and junior Alaina Bromley also shined at the major meets and round out a fantastic top five for the Chiefs. Seniors Francesca Corona, Madison Whipple and Charlotte LaRue and sophomore Sydney Morrison hope to crack the top seven.

Outlook: Last year was one for the ages for the Chiefs, who went undefeated and claimed titles at every big race: the county open, the conference meet, sectionals, states, the Meet of Champions and Nike Northeast Regionals. One of the premier programs in the state will continue to set the bar high this fall.

Cherry Hill East Cougars
Runners to watch:
Senior Alexis Tepper will look to cap her remarkable career at Cherry Hill East with a big senior final season. The South Jersey, Group 4 and Olympic Conference champion as a sophomore, she also shined at those races last fall, taking third at sectionals in 18:59 and fifth at the conference meet in 19:18. She went on to place 20th at states and 49th at the Meet of Champions. Cate Feudtner is a promising sophomore and senior Anna Kramer is a key veteran who gives the Cougars a strong top three. The rest of the varsity lineup still has to develop, and seniors Jaimin Nam and Katherine Li are among those looking to contribute.

Outlook: The Cougars have been runners-up behind Cherokee at the sectional and conference meets the past two years and also placed fifth at states and 10th at the MOC in 2021. With Tepper leading a talented core, they are in store for more success this fall under new head coach Christine Mason.

Cherry Hill West Lions
Runners to watch:
Cherry Hill West graduated No. 1 runner Megan Faucett but has several other promising returners. Senior Julisa Rodriguez posted a time of 22:19 to place 34th at the South Jersey, Group 3 sectional meet. She has a chance to lower her times and emerge as the No. 1 runner for the Lions. Lizbeth Reyes is another senior who has enjoyed a solid career at West. Junior Jade Abejo showed potential as a sophomore and hopes to keep improving.

Outlook: The Lions are looking to build their numbers this season, and the few returners they have will attempt to peak at the big races.

Clearview Pioneers
Runners to watch:
Clearview brings back a terrific trio led by senior Abigail Waddington, who took first at four big races last year, including the Gloucester County Championships with a time of 19:14. She also placed third at the Tri-County Conference Showcase, set a PR with an 18:08.19 to take second at sectionals, and went on to finish 14th at states. She is poised for a monster final season. Senior Abigail Kotran had top-10 performances at the county, conference and sectional meets, running around the high 19s and low 20s consistently. Junior Maggie Wisniewski is the final member of the big three; she ran a career-best time of 19:45.64 to take seventh at sectionals and had strong efforts at states, the county and conference races. Junior Allison Roes is another talented veteran who shined at the major races, while senior Aubrey Donahue has been a key distance runner the past two years in track and is joining the cross country team for the first time. Juniors Rachel Jones and Lillian Nolan and sophomores Anna Hagerman and Lilla Porter are contributors as well.

Outlook: Last year was a special one for the Pioneers, who captured the first sectional title in program history in addition to taking second in the county, third in the conference and 11th at states. With all of the key runners back in place, expectations remain high.

Eastern Vikings
Runners to watch:
Senior Sophia Gambescia placed in the top 10 at the Camden County Championships last year and went on to place 25th at the Olympic Conference meet and 35th at sectionals. She will look to get her times into the low 20s and high 19s this fall and move into the No. 1 spot for Eastern. Juniors Taylor Hodnett and Caroline Becker are other consistent runners who will be counted on in the big races. Junior Kayla Spalter made progress throughout her sophomore season, and sophomore Brianna Panchal is a returner from the JV squad who hopes to contribute on varsity. Senior Maggie Mosier, junior Regan Bewley and sophomore Addison Foster are newcomers who will provide depth.

Outlook: The Vikings always seem to be competitive at the big races, and last year was no different at their took fourth in the county, sixth in the conference and eighth at sectionals. They will have to develop depth behind their main core but hope to stay in the mix.

Haddonfield Bulldawgs
Runners to watch:
Haddonfield is thrilled to welcome back two members of the all-South Jersey team, both of whom finished in the top four at the Group 2 sectional meet. Senior Sabrina Miller took third at sectionals in 18:53 and seventh at states in 19:46, while senior Helene Usher finished fourth at sectionals in 19:02. Miller also seized the crown at the Colonial Conference All-Star Meet and Usher took third. Other standouts are juniors Audrey Naticchia (fifth at sectionals, 11th at states), Riley Slootsky (eighth at sectionals, 13th at states) and Sarah Fetter (seventh at sectionals). Junior Ava Thomas was running well early in the season before suffering a knee injury and is coming off an extremely successful spring, and senior Libby DeMichele has also joined the cross country team following a strong outdoor track season. Several other returners will push for the top seven, including senior Bridget Towers, junior Ava Peifer and sophomores Tylin Regan and Katherine Asher, and several newcomers are expected to have an impact right away.

Outlook: The Bulldawgs’ magical ride in 2021 included their 12th straight sectional title, a state crown and a fifth-place finish at the Meet of Champions. There is no reason they should not be among the top teams in the state once again this fall.

Kingsway Dragons
Runners to watch:
Aubrey Pierontoni has put together a memorable career at Kingsway and it will be exciting to see how she closes it out as a senior. She set a PR with a time of 18:24.57 to claim the South Jersey, Group 4 title last year and went on to place 13th at states and 39th at the Meet of Champions. She was also the runner-up at both the Gloucester County Championships and Tri-County Conference Showcase and will be a top contender at all of the big races this fall. Seniors Nicole Lipieta and Shelby Dyer are other key returners who both placed in the top 10 at the county and conference meets and finished 32nd and 34th, respectively, at sectionals. Juniors Cassidy Dunk and Kendall Cramer are consistent competitors and will be counted on as well. Senior Sarah Hover rounds out a strong top six and senior Gina Ostrowski also hopes to make an impact.

Outlook: The Dragons were in the mix at most of the major meets in 2021, winning county and conference titles while finishing third at sectionals and ninth at states. Pierontoni and the rest of the returners intend on keeping Kingsway in contention.

Lenape Indians
Runners to watch:
Lenape had a limited roster in 2021 and will have a much different look this fall. One of the lone varsity returners is sophomore Kate Devery, who made strides throughout her rookie season and ended the year at sectionals. She will look to get her times into the low 20-minute range. Members of the JV squad who hope to step up and contribute include senior Madison Riley, juniors Scarlet Chen, Alyson Goldbacher and Julia Burgess and sophomore Sophie Bacso. Junior Kacey Thomas and sophomore Katie Gallego are track veterans running cross country for the first time and add depth.

Outlook: The Indians aim to work hard as a group this year and build a strong foundation for the future.

Moorestown Quakers
Runners to watch:
Juniors Mary Laufer and Paige McCabe are key returners who both finished in the top 10 of the Liberty Division at the Burlington County Scholastic League Championships. They also had solid showings at the Burlington County Open and sectional races and will lead the way for Moorestown. Sophomore Noelia Reyes and junior Zi Chen are also members of the top five, while sophomore Lila Dionis and senior Linda Jiang hope to contribute as well. The newcomers include three seniors, two juniors, five sophomores and two freshmen.

Outlook: The Quakers had an inexperienced squad in 2021 but bring back a core with potential and should move up in the team standings at the major meets.

Moorestown Friends Foxes
Runners to watch:
Junior Hannah Puc, an accomplished athlete who is also a standout golfer at Moorestown Friends, returns as the No. 1 runner for the Foxes. She had a top finish of 28th at the Friends Schools League Championships, placed 39th at states and consistently ran in the mid-20s as a sophomore. Puc will look to get those times into the low 20s and move up a few spots at the big races this fall. Senior Sarah Mitchell is another key veteran.

Outlook: The Foxes are optimistic about strengthening the numbers in the program and making strides throughout the season as new head coach Christina Farrow takes over leadership of the team.

Paul VI Eagles
Runners to watch:
Junior Shaelan McNally has already accomplished so much in her high school career and it is only halfway over. Last year she clocked an 18:45.30 at the Bob Kiessling Invitational to place second and went on to take sixth at states in 19:41 and 25th at the Meet of Champions in 19:06. She also took third at the Camden County Championships and seventh at the Olympic Conference Championships. McNally will certainly be in the mix for one or more individual titles this fall. Gisella Croge and Danielle Russell are other talented juniors who both placed in the top 20 at the conference meet. Seniors Kamryn Ciesklik, Anna Dougherty and Samantha Swearington and sophomore Olivia Medina are all capable of running near the front of the pack, while junior Bridget Gottilla will push to be in the top seven as well. Junior Gianna Molavi will look to post times in the low 20s.

Outlook: The Eagles’ best performance as a team in 2021 was their second-place finish at the county race, and they also took fifth in the conference and 12th at states. They should make noise at those races this season with McNally standing out among the crowd.

Seneca Golden Eagles
Runners to watch:
Junior Alex Butcher was Seneca’s top finisher at sectionals last year as she posted a time of 21:34 to place 16th. She will be one of the leaders of the pack this fall. Junior Loralyn Balint was right behind Butcher at sectionals and senior Paige Venable is another key veteran. Senior Lindsey Hough is a newcomer who could post similar times to Butcher and junior Catie Andrews is another notable addition. Juniors Haylee Mehigan and Rayne Kanaly are strong contenders for the top seven as well. Junior Paige Scafidi and senior Danielle Wheeler are other returners hoping to contribute.

Outlook: The Golden Eagles have a lot of experience back in the fold and will focus on overall improvement as team heading into the major races.

Shawnee Renegades
Runners to watch:
Several key veterans are back for Shawnee, including senior Kate Ruona, who has been an impact runner for the Renegades since she was a freshman. She ran 19:54 at last year's Burlington County Open to place sixth. Junior Nicole Tellechea (11th), senior Sydney Kiernan (12th) and junior Claudia Koch (20th) also finished in the top 20 at the county meet, while Tellechea and Kiernan were in the top 20 at the Olympic Conference Championships as well. Tellechea also had a solid performance at sectionals, clocking a 20:40 for 23rd. Senior Elizabeth Pollock and junior Misha Yadav are other experienced runners and sophomore Kayla Dilks will look to improve in her second season.

Outlook: The Renegades were in contention at the big races in 2021, taking second in the county, third in the conference and sixth at sectionals. They have the core in place to stay there this fall.

Washington Township Minutemaids
Runners to watch:
Ally Wernik emerged as Washington Township’s No. 1 runner as a junior and leads a strong crop of seniors for the Minutemaids. She placed eighth at the Gloucester County Championships in 21:07 and 23rd at the Olympic Conference Championships in 21:24. Seniors Gabriella Maletta and Sophia Bostwick also finished in the top 10 at the county meet, while Maletta was the team’s top finisher at sectionals in 25th and Bostwick led the way at the conference meet in 18th. Other experienced returners are seniors Katelyn Arnold and Grace Wahl.

Outlook: This is an exciting time for the Minutemaids as they move from the Olympic Conference into the Tri-County, where they will face Gloucester County rivals like Kingsway, Clearview and Williamstown. They expect to be competitive with a strong veteran core.
