Bishop Eustace Crusaders
Runners to watch: The Crusaders graduated their top runners but are happy to welcome back a solid junior class with plenty of potential. That group incudes Matt Colden, Ryan Gaulrapp and Arthur Wheeler, who all finished within a few spots of each other at the Bob Kiessling Invitational. A week later at states, Wheeler placed 27th, Gaulrapp took 39th and Colden was 41st, and Wheeler and Colden went on to compete at the Meet of Champions. All three will be pushing each other this season and could lead the pack on any given day, while junior transfer Chris Stinson is expected to fit right away with that group. Senior John Stewart is another veteran returner, while sophomores Ethan Caprarola, Cristian Berardi and Joel Torres hope to build on their promising rookie seasons.
Outlook: The Crusaders placed second at both the Bob Kiessling Invitational and the Non-Public B state meet in a memorable 2021 campaign. There are some big shoes to fill but they should remain competitive at those meets.
Camden Catholic Fighting Irish
Runners to watch: Camden Catholic said goodbye to one of the area’s top competitors in Billy Clewell, who graduated, but brings back almost every other runner from last year. Junior Patrick McInerney finished in the top 20 at both the Camden County Championships and Bob Kiessling Invitational and covered several courses in under 18 minutes. He appears ready to take over as the No. 1 runner on the team. Seniors Ryan O’Callaghan and Anthony Pisasale also clocked solid times at the major meets and are key veterans. Junior Mark Armstrong and sophomore Sean Leahy are other returners from the top seven who should only get better with a year of experience under their belts. Senior Brian Rotter and junior John Ryan Connelly are other contributors.
Outlook: There is no replacing Clewell, but the Irish still have a talented core that should perform well at the major races.
Cherokee Chiefs
Runners to watch: Cherokee brings back an outstanding group of runners led by senior Patrick Ditmars, an all-state third-team selection last year. He was the Burlington County champion, placed second at the sectional and Olympic Conference meets, and finished in the top 20 at states and the Meet of Champions (MOC). His sectional performance was especially impressive, as he clocked a time of 15:43. Ditmars will be a runner to watch at all of the championship meets. Fellow senior Conor Jacob had his best showing at sectionals, as he took third in 15:52, and he went on to take 16th at states and 30th at the MOC. Junior Nick Kuenkel missed much of the cross country season but shined during outdoor track and is another elite runner. Junior Bobby Poplau placed fifth in the county and 20th at sectionals and rounds out a terrific quartet.
Those four teamed up to capture the 4x800 title at the track Meet of Champions. Sophomore Liam Tindall ran 4:32 for the mile during a solid freshman track season and senior Danny Hassall has made a big improvement over the past two years. They will contend for a spot in the top seven along with senior Tom Bromley and junior Andrew Free.
Outlook: The Chiefs’ 2021 season included first-place finishes at the Olympic Conference, Burlington County and South Jersey, Group 4 meets. They also took fifth at states and seventh at the MOC. They aim to contend at all of those races this fall and should make some room in the trophy case.
Cherry Hill East Cougars
Runners to watch: An excellent senior class graduated but a solid core remains at Cherry Hill East. Senior Michael McCurdy consistently ran in the 17-minute range last year and will look to leap to the front of the pack for the Cougars. He clocked a 16:33 to place 21st at sectionals and posted a 17:01 at the Meet of Champions. Junior Raine Guidarelli placed 29th at sectionals in 16:47 and 22nd at the Olympic Conference Championships in 17:08. Senior Peter Tepper is another key returner who ran 17:01 at sectionals for 32nd. Seniors Daniel Farling, Grant Yoon and Christopher Korneyev will also be counted on at the major races.
Outlook: The Cougars finished third at the sectional and conference meets and had top-10 showings at states and the MOC in 2021. They will set the bar high this fall as well.
Cherry Hill West Lions
Runners to watch: Cherry Hill West saw its top returner, Thomas Youse, move to Tennessee, so the No. 1 spot is wide open. Sophomore Bradley Bricker is a promising returner who will look to get his times into the low 19-minute range. Jason Melroy is another sophomore with potential and junior Evan Boxley is a key veteran. Other returners hoping to make an impact are seniors Nathan Stehly and James Martin and sophomore Immanuel Carpenter. Freshman Rex Takakjy is expected to have an immediate impact.
Outlook: The Lions hope to put their best foot forward at the major races and move up a few spots in the team standings.
Clearview Pioneers
Runners to watch: Senior Cavan Agatone posted several impressive times during his junior campaign and is primed for a big senior season. He broke 17 minutes at the Tri-County Conference Championships to place 11th, clocked a 17:11 at sectionals to finish 22nd in South Jersey, Group 3, and ran 18:14 at the Gloucester County Championships to take 16th. Junior Akshar Patel covered the sectional course in 18:48 and is another key runner who will be near the front of the pack. Senior William Damiri is a veteran returner, while sophomores Joseph Dell’Aquila and Sun Daneil are hoping to build on their solid rookie seasons.
Outlook: The Pioneers placed fifth at the conference and county meets last year to go with a ninth at sectionals, and they expect to make their presence felt at those races again in 2022.
Eastern Vikings
Runners to watch: Junior Owen Karcsh turned in a terrific performance at the Olympic Conference Championships last year, as he covered the course in 16:31 to finish ninth. He also clocked a 17:54 at sectionals and will look to ride that momentum into becoming the No. 1 runner for Eastern. Junior Ethan Robayo and senior Kiernan Diaz are other key veterans who will be counted on for consistency throughout the season. Sophomore Ryan Haefele is a top newcomer to watch, and members of last season’s JV team who hope to contribute include junior Dayyan Shaikh and sophomores Nicholas Sirdashney, Nick Schuenmann and Nicholas Werner.
Outlook: The Vikings have talent at the front of the pack and can make some noise at the major meets if they can round out the top seven.
Haddonfield Bulldawgs
Runners to watch: Although Haddonfield said goodbye to one outstanding runner—Seth Clevenger, who graduated—the Bulldawgs are happy to welcome back another in senior George Andrus. Last fall, he placed third at sectionals in 15:31, third at states in 16:11 and 16th at the Meet of Champions with a stellar time of 15:58. He also had a remarkable outdoor track season in the spring, including a third-place showing at the MOC in the two-mile. Andrus should be a contender at all of the major races this season. Robert DiMedio is another talented senior who placed in the top 10 at sectionals and the Colonial Conference meet. He went on to clock a 16:50 for 12th place at sectionals and ran 16:44 at the MOC. Senior Donald Jelling finished 16th at both sectionals and states and consistently ran in the 16-minute and low 17-minute range, and senior Ian Romea was one place behind him at sectionals. Juniors Liam Dougherty and Matthew Sullivan are other key returners along with sophomore Bennett Wright, who won the JV race at the Colonial Conference Championships.
Outlook: Last season was yet another memorable one for the Bulldawgs, who extended their streak of Colonial Conference crowns to 24 years, captured their 18th straight sectional title and went on to add a state championship and a third at the MOC. They will continue to set lofty goals in 2022.
Kingsway Dragons
Runners to watch: Kingsway suffered big losses to graduation, with five of the top seven moving on, including one of the state’s best in Kyle Rakitis. Leading the returners is senior Cesar Pedro, who placed eighth at both the Gloucester County Championships and Tri-County Conference Showcase as a junior. He also clocked a 16:46 to finish 27th at sectionals and went on to compete at states. Senior Darius Davis is the other returner from the top seven. He posted times in the 17s at the conference and sectional meets. Senior Judah Weismer was the JV champion at the conference meet and will look to make an impact at the varsity level. Senior Garrett Schultz and juniors Thomas Hover and Alexander Mitchell also hope to contribute.
Outlook: The Dragons were champions at the conference showcase, second at the county meet and fourth at sectionals before placing 16th at states without an injured Rakitis. There are certainly large shoes to fill throughout the lineup but this is a program that always finds a way to stay competitive.
Lenape Indians
Runners to watch: Senior Colin Hermack is coming off back-to-back strong seasons and is ready to lead Lenape as its No. 1 runner. He placed in the top 10 at the Burlington County Open and the Olympic Conference Championships as a junior, clocking 17:06 and 16:31, respectively. He also had an excellent performance at sectionals, running 16:23 to finish 15th. Seniors Andrew Dove and Sean Brennan are other returners from the top seven who will run near the front of the pack. Dove clocked an 18:42 at sectionals and Brennan consistently posted times in the 19-minute range. Other veterans expected to make a difference are seniors Matthew Michnowski and Kevin Kinkade and junior Benjamin Rose.
Outlook: The Indians placed fourth at both the county and conference meets in 2021 and finished seventh at sectionals. Hermack should be in the mix individually at those races this fall and help Lenape stay competitive in the team standings as well.
Moorestown Quakers
Runners to watch: Seniors Colin Shand and Will Inglis finished within seconds of each other at all of the major races last year and will lead the way for Moorestown. Shand placed fifth at the Burlington County Scholastic League (BCSL) meet in 16:59, 12th at the Burlington County Open in 17:30 and 21st at sectionals in 17:10. Inglis finished just ahead of him at the conference meet, placing third in 16:36, and took 14th at the county open in 17:40 and 24th at sectionals in 17:16. Shand and Inglis also broke 18 minutes at the state meet. Junior Hari Bezwada placed 10th at the BCSL meet and clocked an 18:05 at sectionals, and senior Luke Labroli is another top veteran who consistently ran in the 18-minute range as a junior. Seniors Evan Schaffer and Jeffery Schneider and junior Luke Steene also hope to crack the top seven.
Outlook: The Quakers were champs of the Liberty Division at the BCSL meet and also placed third in the county, fifth at sectionals and 18th at states. They will move into the Olympic Conference this season and hope to make some noise there and in the other major races.
Moorestown Friends Foxes
Runners to watch: Senior Andrew Mercantini has been the No. 1 runner for Moorestown Friends each of the past two seasons and is primed for a big final year. He clocked a time of 18:11 to finish 10th at the Friends Schools League (FSL) Championships and earned first-team accolades. He also broke 19 minutes to take 18th at sectionals and 30th at the Burlington County Open. Collin Montenegro, Evan Weinstock and Nathaniel Rodwell-Simon—who ran well early last year before being sidelined with an injury—are other senior leaders who hope to keep lowering their times throughout the season. Heera Dalal is another senior expected to contribute, while sophomores Mason Levins, Isaac Linden and Andrew Zhou will look to build on the potential they showed as rookies.
Outlook: The Foxes placed fourth at the FSL meet and sixth at states in a solid 2021 campaign. With Mercantini leading the way, more success should be on the way.
Paul VI Eagles
Runners to watch: Paul VI brings back most of its varsity roster, including two runners who placed in the top 10 at the Bob Kiessling Invitational: senior Joseph Wigginton and junior Will Mrozinski. Wigginton took seventh in 17:03 and also placed 11th at the Camden County Championships in 18:15. Mrozinski covered the Kiessling course in 17:08 to place ninth and was the Eagles’ best finisher at states as he ran 17:38 to take 28th. The senior class is deep with key veterans AJ Collarin, Colin Cunniff, Tyler Smith, Owen King and Matthew Houck all back in the fold. Sophomore Christian Napoli ran a 4:44 mile as a rookie and should also contribute.
Outlook: With so many experienced runners, the Eagles have a chance to improve on their performances at the major races after taking fourth in the county, third at the Kiessling Invitational and 11th at states.
Seneca Golden Eagles
Runners to watch: Senior Justin Schmied made great strides from his sophomore to junior seasons and emerged as the No. 1 runner for Seneca. He consistently ran in the 18-minute range and was the team’s best finisher at the Burlington County Open, the Olympic Conference Championships and the sectional meet. Junior Caleb Graeber is capable of posting similar times and will be another key runner this fall along with senior Kirk Traenker. Juniors Reindell Bailey and Andrew Cosper and sophomore Connor McCafferty have the potential to crack the top seven as well. Other returners hoping to leave their mark are seniors Curtis James and Garrett Caizza and sophomores Angelo Mejia-Ranno, Rory Tokazeksi, Patrick Griffin and Bryce Griffin.
Outlook: The Golden Eagles have a lot of depth returning and should be much improved this fall.
Shawnee Renegades
Runners to watch: Shawnee graduated its No. 1 runner but has several returners capable of moving into the top spot. That includes senior Ryan Czechowski, who clocked a 17:03 to place 19th at the Olympic Conference Championships and a 17:05 to finish 36th at sectionals. He ran a 5K PR of 16:35 on the track this past spring. Junior Ryan Kaczur also broke 18 minutes at sectionals as he covered the course in 17:21, and he had a solid showing at the Burlington County Open with a time of 18:17. Sophomore Finnegan Bracken got better and better as his rookie season went on and posted an 18:15 at sectionals, while senior Elijah Nix was consistently in the 18-minute range throughout the year. Junior Eli Mackey, fresh off running a 4:30 in the 1600 meters last spring, is joining the cross country team for the first time and should factor into the top five, as will freshman Yanni Ekatomatis, who is already showing a lot of promise. Other key returning runners include juniors Jack Nguyen and Daniel Murphy and sophomore Noah Stapleton.
Outlook: The Renegades placed fifth at the county and conference races in 2021 to go with a 10th at sectionals. They have a deep core with 10 boys who have run 5:05 or faster in the 1600—including four under 4:50—and nine with 5K PRs under 19 minutes. It will be exciting to see how many they can get under 18 and 17 minutes by the end of the season.
Washington Township Minutemen
Runners to watch: Washington Township graduated many of its top runners from a year ago but is happy to welcome back senior Tellus McDonald and sophomore Hunter Bostwick, who are both eager to take over as the leaders of the team. McDonald consistently ran in the high 17s and low 18s and placed 15th at the Gloucester County Championships. Bostwick, meanwhile, had an immediate impact as a freshman, including a stellar time of 16:55 at the Olympic Conference meet to place 18th. Senior Colin Keane posted times in the 18-minute range and will also be relied upon, as will junior Aaron Kolowsky, who showed potential as an underclassman. Seniors Alexander Schultes and Andrew Wahl and juniors Wade Olivio, Patrick Lant and Adrian Gonzalez will all push to be in the top seven.
Outlook: The Minutemen had a memorable season in 2021 that included the Gloucester County team title and a second-place finish in their final Olympic Conference meet before taking fifth at sectionals and 13th at states. As they move into the Tri-County Conference this year, there are some spots to fill but they hope to stay competitive.
