Camden Catholic Fighting Irish
Players to watch: Camden Catholic graduated its leader in kills, Genevieve May, but welcomes back the rest of its starting lineup. Senior Bella Craig, who started her career as an outside hitter, moved to libero as a junior and was just as valuable for the Irish. Her defense and serving will once again be key this fall. Junior outside hitter Sofia Granieri is an offensive force, and other important players in the front row are senior middle blocker Sarah Johnson and sophomore outside hitter/middle blocker Sophia Palumbo. Senior Isabella Martinez and junior Nicole Robertson are other hitters to keep an eye on and Camden Catholic also has two veteran setters who are reliable pieces of the attack: juniors Reya Taylor and Charlotte Hibbs. Senior Emma Laramaee is an experienced defensive specialist and junior Jessie Espino also hopes to contribute.
Outlook: Girls volleyball was moved to March and April during the 2020-21 school year because of the pandemic, and the Irish were limited to just six matches, finishing 3-3. They have a talented and experienced roster and are looking forward to a full season with the sport moving back to its normal time frame in the fall.
Cherokee Chiefs
Players to watch: A stellar crop of seniors received their diplomas in June and all-conference outside hitter Taylor Bartrum moved out of state, but Cherokee still has a solid core returning from a sectional finalist team. Junior Brooke O’Prandy is a talented outside hitter who has been contributing since her freshman year and could be ready for a starring role. Senior Justine Harvey is a terrific libero who led the Chiefs with 104 digs and is also a strong server. Sophomore Anna Hunter saw time as a rookie and will look to become the starting setter and senior Brianna Wegner is a veteran who can play several positions.
Outlook: The Chiefs had a memorable run last season, going 11-3 and dropping a three-set classic to Southern in the sectional final. They have some important players to replace but, as always, expect to be one of the better teams in the area as Erin Farrell takes over the program. A former player and assistant coach at Cherokee, she replaces Erika McGinley, who led the Chiefs for more than a decade and had a very successful tenure.
Cherry Hill East Cougars
Players to watch: Senior Tori Radzinska enjoyed a breakout season as a junior and has high hopes for her final campaign at Cherry Hill East. The outside hitter not only possesses great athleticism but also fights hard on every point. She recorded 70 kills and 32 digs to make the all-conference first team. Senior libero Grace Ehret is another top returner who had 84 digs and was named to the all-conference second team. Ehret is also one of the Cougars’ best servers. Senior Gabrielle Hart joins Radzinska as an offensive weapon at middle hitter and junior Lily Thomas will also make an impact in the front row. Cherry Hill East always seems to churn out talented setters and junior Lanna Biederman could be the latest. Other returners looking to take on bigger roles are junior Joelle Kang and sophomores Alaina Farber, Lydia Ding and Stav Butbul.
Outlook: The Cougars reached the sectional semifinals last season and finished with a 10-4 record, with their losses coming to teams with a combined 40-5 record. With Radzinska and Ehret leading the way this fall, they are headed for another successful campaign.
Clearview Pioneers
Players to watch: A talented nucleus is back from Clearview’s best team in years, so hopes are high in Mullica Hill. One of the top returners is junior libero Karissa Herman, who led the Pioneers with 75 digs and 36 aces and was rewarded with all-conference first-team honors. Sophomore outside hitter Avery Roberts made a name for herself as a rookie, registering a team-high 56 kills to go with 42 digs and 23 aces. She was an all-conference second-team selection. Senior setter Giavanna Joseph is the orchestrator of the offense and a gamer who can often be found hustling to all corners of the court. Seniors Sarah Ferguson and Alexandra Neumann are key returners at middle blocker and junior Lauren Reiling adds depth at middle and outside hitter. Senior Allison Higgins and junior Katherine Thorn are other experienced veterans who contribute in the back row.
Outlook: The Pioneers went 8-5 for their first winning season since 2014 and also earned their first playoff victory in eight years. With so many promising players back in the fold, they will set their goals even higher this fall.
Eastern Vikings
Players to watch: Eastern was hit hard by graduation but has several returners who gained experience last season and are ready to take over leadership of the team. Among that group is junior Joanna Shin, who can set up her teammates or put kills away herself and is also an excellent server. Senior middle blocker Jaclyn Nyce and senior outside hitter Kaitlyn Devlin will be counted on for big plays out of the front row, and other offensive contributors are seniors Adrianna Genovese, Liv Deol and Naomi Smith. Senior Erin Pagenkopf is an experienced setter and senior Brianna Dutterer will make an impact as well.
Outlook: The Vikings got off to a slow start last season but played much better in the second half and finished with a 4-11 record. They hope to get out of the gates quicker and add a few more wins against a challenging schedule.
Gloucester Catholic Rams
Players to watch: Senior outside hitter Natalia Barrera is looking to build on a solid junior season in which she led Gloucester Catholic in kills and blocks and was third in digs. She will be a key player both offensively and defensively. Senior middle blocker Anna Kain is another top returner in the front row who also shines with her serve. Senior Adrianna Pelosi, who was second on the team in digs, contributes at both middle blocker and outside hitter. Junior Delaney McEneaney is an experienced setter and will share the role with sophomore Zoe DeAngelis. Junior Gena Driscoll has some big shoes to fill as she takes over the libero position from graduated captain Lauren Wethman, but hopes to be up for the challenge. Junior Ella Kain will start at outside hitter and sophomore Emily Leahy is a promising defensive specialist. Grace Miedel and Ava Golby are two freshmen who have been impressive during summer workouts.
Outlook: The Rams went 3-9 last season and have been in rebuilding mode in recent years, but have a chance to make significant strides this fall with a lot of key returners back in the mix.
Kingsway Dragons
Players to watch: Kingsway suffered big losses to graduation, with three all-conference players and four other key contributors moving on. New leaders will have to step up and senior outside hitter Caitlyn Hickey is one of the candidates. She moved up from JV to varsity and shined in a big win over Clearview late last season. Senior Reese Farls and junior Alana Oman are other important returners who saw time at defensive specialist and could figure prominently at several positions. Junior Julia Dionglay also got into several matches as a sophomore and is hoping to play a bigger role. Several players from Kingsway’s talented JV squad will be expected to fill in other spots in the lineup.
Outlook: The Dragons will have a much different look after finishing 8-4 with a senior-laden team last season. The program usually turns out talented players and their chances this year will depend on how soon the newcomers adjust to the varsity level.
Lenape Indians
Players to watch: Devin Roskoph and Bria Morgan were Lenape’s top offensive weapons last season and return to lead the way this fall. Roskoph, a senior middle blocker, recorded a team-high 58 kills to go with 16 digs and was named all-conference honorable mention. Morgan, a sophomore outside hitter, had a terrific rookie season, totaling 52 kills, 76 digs and 32 aces. Senior middle Ava Rankin is another key returner in the front row who had 43 kills, 16 blocks and 20 aces. Senior Samantha Anderson and sophomore Abigail Oswari are other outside hitters to keep an eye on, and senior Sydney Yao is ready to take over at setter after setting for the JV team last year. The defense is also solid thanks to senior libero Maya Burgos, who led the Indians with 140 digs and added 31 assists. Senior Claire Ostaszewski is an experienced defensive specialist who is a strong server as well. Other returners hoping to contribute are juniors Mallory Blackburn and Samantha Vanderveen.
Outlook: The Indians got off to a slow start last season but won seven of their final eight games—including a playoff victory—to finish with a 9-7 record. Their confidence will be high entering this year.
Moorestown Quakers
Players to watch: Sam Scully has enjoyed a memorable career at Moorestown and is poised for a big final season as one of the top players in South Jersey. A senior outside hitter, she is nearing 400 kills for her career after finishing with 22 in just five games as a junior. Scully also had 26 digs and six aces. Senior Bree Wilson gives the Quakers a talented one-two punch at outside hitter. She had 14 kills, 12 digs and four aces last season. Senior Anne Connelly had 60 assists and is back for her third season as the starting setter. In addition to Scully and Wilson, Connelly will also be looking to set up senior Jola DaSilva and junior Jenna Castrati, who are experienced middle blockers. Senior defensive specialist Maci Ryan and junior libero Gabi Baer are other key returners. Seniors Hannah Murray and Julia Moller and juniors Lilly Clark, Elsa Law, Taylor Pitts and Autumn Rogers are also looking to make an impact.
Outlook: The Quakers were affected by COVID shutdowns last season and had just three regular-season games before going on a playoff run to the sectional semifinals and finishing with a 5-1 record. They are excited for a full slate of games this fall and will be competitive as usual.
Paul VI Eagles
Players to watch: Paul VI graduated several outstanding players from its sectional championship squad but there is still plenty of talent remaining on the roster. Junior middle blocker Zharia Harris Waddy earned all-conference first-team accolades after filling the stat sheet with 52 kills, 15 blocks, 12 digs and 28 aces. Senior outside hitter Sadie Arasim was named to the all-conference second team—the second year in a row she was recognized by the coaches in the league—and totaled 50 kills, 62 blocks and 16 aces. Junior Ogonna Ngene is another solid middle blocker who finished with 41 kills and 10 blocks. Junior opposite ChiChi Ottih and sophomore outside hitter Emily Ezeiruaku are other potential contributors in the front frow. Juniors Lauren Vincenti and Ella Pobre are experienced setters who could move into the starting role and junior Megan Bischoff is a returning defensive specialist.
Outlook: The Eagles made an impressive run to the South Jersey Non-Public A title last season, knocking off the No. 3 seed and the No. 1 seed along the way and finishing with an 11-2 record. There are some big spots to fill but they have a chance to be one of the area’s best teams once again.
Seneca Golden Eagles
Players to watch: Senior outside hitter Wyette Schubert-Brown is coming off a breakout season in which she led Seneca with 66 kills and also recorded six blocks, 18 digs and 13 aces. She will once again pace the offense. Senior middle blocker Hannah Obiedzinski is another top returner who had 21 kills, 17 blocks and 16 aces. Big things will be expected from her up front. Junior Calissa Araujo is another experienced middle blocker who should assume a larger role as an upperclassman. Senior Avery Tatum is a talented setter and is looking forward to orchestrating the attack. Several JV players will need to step up and fill out the rest of the lineup.
Outlook: The Golden Eagles hosted a playoff game for the first time in program history—and won it—on their way to a 7-6 record last season. They have been a competitive team the last several years and hope to stay that way with Schubert-Brown leading the charge.
Shawnee Renegades
Players to watch: Shawnee returns just one varsity regular from an outstanding team, but fortunately she is a special one. Mia Moscicki, a 6-foot senior outside hitter, was named the Olympic Conference Player of the Year after recording 143 kills, 60 digs and 26 aces as a junior. She has been a key player since her freshman season, going over 100 kills every year of her career, and is looking to go out on a high note this fall. A solid group of upperclassmen is ready to fill in and replace last year’s graduates, including seniors Sophia Constantinou, Jacklyn Levondosky, Lauren Petitt, Molly Suplee and Allie Truskin along with juniors Adaline Dymkowski and Madison Thornton.
Outlook: Last season was a memorable one for Shawnee, which captured its first sectional title in its 17-year history and finished with a nearly perfect record of 12-1. A stellar senior class moved on, but Moscicki hopes to keep the Renegades in the hunt.
Washington Township Minutemaids
Players to watch: Bryn Bautista made quite the first impression in her freshman season, as she led Washington Township with 68 kills and added 41 digs to make the all-conference second team. The outside hitter should continue to get better and better throughout her career. Setter Nina Cleary is another talented sophomore who broke into the starting lineup as a rookie, registered 166 assists and 24 aces and earned all-conference honorable mention accolades. Senior libero Addie Sondberg, who totaled 52 digs, is one of the vocal leaders for the Minutemaids, and other key veterans are senior opposite Olivia Dowling and junior middle blocker Bella Dulude. Middle blocker Samantha Moss and defensive specialists Melanie Goffredo and Ava Lawler are seniors to watch, and outside hitter Victoria Capone is a top junior.
Outlook: The Minutemaids’ 7-4 season included several notable wins, including a playoff victory over Rancocas Valley. With so many important players back in the fold, another successful year should be in the cards.
