2021 Preview & Schedule

Bishop Eustace Crusaders
Players to watch: Five starters are back for Bishop Eustace, including three who saw time at first singles as the lineup shifted throughout the season. Senior Izzy Anzideo has been a key player the last two years and split her junior season between first singles and first doubles. No matter where she lands this fall, she will be a leader for the Crusaders. Junior Ava Kaloustian ended the season at first singles after opening the year at second doubles and moving up the ladder to third singles and eventually the No. 1 spot. Sophomore Laurel Montuori also gained experience at first singles along with second singles in her promising rookie campaign. Ava Brenza is another sophomore who flashed potential as a freshman, playing second and third singles along with second doubles. Senior Catherine Azelby is the final returning starter after contributing at third singles and second doubles.
Outlook: The Crusaders took their lumps last year with an inexperienced squad, but with so many returners who got to experience multiple positions and learned plenty of valuable lessons along the way, they should be much improved in 2021.

Cherokee Chiefs
Players to watch: Shruti Mannan burst onto the scene in a big way last year as a freshman, setting the stage for a sensational career at Cherokee. Following the lead of her older brother Arjun, who just completed a memorable four years of his own on the Cherokee boys team, she also seized the No. 1 singles position as a rookie and compiled an impressive 10-2 record in a COVID-shortened season. It will be exciting to see what Mannan can do with the return of a full schedule, including individual tournaments. The rest of the singles lineup is also back: juniors Ava Ronning and Shruti Mandrekar, who competed at second and third, respectively. They will look to take their game up a notch as upperclassmen. Juniors Ariana Lepore and Samiya Khan were second doubles partners last year and other experienced doubles players are senior Catherine Millaway and junior Gabrielle Hyman.
Outlook: With five starters back and the talented Mannan at No. 1, the Chiefs have an excellent chance of posting a winning record after finishing 4-8 in 2020.

Cherry Hill East Cougars
Players to watch: The entire singles lineup returns for Cherry Hill East, including sophomore Sophia Liu, who emerged as the No. 1 singles player in a strong rookie campaign. Liu spent the first four matches at second singles before taking the top spot the rest of the year and finished with a 9-3 record. Senior Elliana Tonghini spent time at first and second singles and was terrific in both positions. She posted an 11-1 record, as did junior Julia Chan, who competed at third singles as a sophomore. Two starting doubles players are also back in the mix after going undefeated. Senior Vivian Zhao went 10-0 at first doubles and senior Jessica Wang posted an 8-0 record at second. They could possibly team up this season. Senior Kristina Battsogt is another experienced doubles player expected to contribute.
Outlook: The Cougars had a new lineup in 2020 but the end result was quite familiar. They captured a sectional championship for the 19th time in the past 22 years and posted an 11-1 record, finishing the year with 11 straight wins after dropping their opener. Cherry Hill East will once again be one of the elite teams in South Jersey this fall.

Cherry Hill West Lions
Players to watch: Cynthia Chang has been a starter each of her first two seasons at Cherry Hill West and will be a key player as an upperclassman. She saw time at first doubles and third singles as a sophomore and is a candidate to move into the first singles spot. Junior Gail Santos competed at first and second doubles in her first varsity season and will also play an important role. Senior Kourtney Newton emerged as a leader during captains’ practices and freshman Hannah Azar is a potential contender for a singles spot. Other newcomers looking to make an impact are Zahra Karimi and Hana Kolenovic.
Outlook: Former coach Kristin Bradford is back to lead the Lions once again and she hopes to see the team making improvement as the season goes on.

Clearview Pioneers
Players to watch: Carlee Cristella is looking to put an exclamation point on a memorable career at Clearview this fall. A four-year starter who has played first singles the past two seasons, she went 15-1 as a junior and repeated as the Gloucester County champion, leading the Pioneers to their first team crown since 2016. Cristella will attempt to become the fourth girl to win three Gloucester County titles and has the potential to go on a long run in the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships. Junior Emily Miscioscia is another talented returner who has played second singles since she was a freshman. She posted a 10-3 record and reached the county quarterfinals in 2020. Senior Brooke McGuigan and junior McKenzie McDowell went 13-1 together at first doubles, reaching the county final before dropping a three-set match. They could return to first doubles or be candidates for the third singles position. Sophomore Felicity Huang can made great strides and will also make a push for the No. 3 spot. Junior Megan McLoughlin is another returning doubles starter who won nine times in team matches.
Outlook: Five starters and one of South Jersey’s top players are back for a team that went 11-1 last season and hasn’t lost a division match in two years. It’s safe to say that hopes are high for the Pioneers.

Eastern Vikings
Players to watch: All three singles starters are back for Eastern, including senior Lela Phung, who moved into the top spot as a junior. She hopes to apply the lessons she learned and put together a strong final campaign. Senior second singles Nadine Litvak and senior third singles Abby Serata have been solid competitors in those positions the past two years and round out an experienced singles lineup. Sophomore Magha Kumar had an excellent showing at first doubles in her rookie season and could return to that role or challenge for a singles job. Senior Lily Coyne is another returning starter who played second doubles and junior Violet Riquelme also has doubles experience.
Outlook: The Vikings’ 6-4 record in 2020 included a close loss to Lenape in the sectional semifinals. A strong core is in place to lead Eastern to another winning record.

Gloucester Catholic Rams
Players to watch: Most of the starting lineup returns for Gloucester Catholic, including senior Erin Walton, who has been a singles player throughout her career and has been in the top spot the past two seasons. Senior Sara Reed was right behind Walton at No. 2 for the second year in a row, and junior Macie Nugent showed potential at third singles with four wins. Junior Olivia Woodring and sophomore Emily Mondel are potential contributors at doubles.
Outlook: The Rams have a veteran core in place and hope to be competitive this fall.

Haddonfield Bulldawgs
Players to watch: Sammy Sirover earned the third singles spot as a sophomore and compiled an 18-3 record while advancing to the semifinals of the Camden County Tournament. She should be even better as an upperclassman and could be ready to move into the vacant No. 1 position. Lucinda Andrewes is another talented junior who played first doubles and was part of a team that went 18-2 and claimed the county and conference titles. Juniors Tina Tian and Ava Grookett were partners at second doubles and advanced to the county final on their way to a season with double-digit wins. Seniors Genevieve DeCencio and Courtenay Mackey are other returners looking to crack the lineup. Freshman Evangeline York has tournament experience and could land a starting position, possibly in singles.
Outlook: The Bulldawgs’ 13-2 season in 2020 featured their 19th consecutive sectional championship as they won all three of their playoff matches by 5-0 scores. They have an excellent chance of extending the streak to 20 this fall thanks to the balance and depth on the roster.

Kingsway Dragons
Players to watch: Kingsway suffered major hits to its lineup, starting at the top, as senior first singles Delaney Patella tore her ACL last winter and probably won’t be ready for the season. Second singles Julia Nocentino graduated and third singles Sydney Jones moved, so the lineup will have a much different look. Seniors Maddie Phun and Ashton Sirko competed at first doubles together and reached the semifinals of the Gloucester County Tournament. One or both of them could move into a singles role. Senior Maddie Lavender and sophomore Ryan Finlaw were partners at second doubles and compiled a winning record during team matches. They will also be counted on to play important roles. Juniors Maddie Malesich and Cali Volpe are other experience doubles players expected to contribute.
Outlook: The Dragons went 5-7 with a lot of new faces in the lineup last year. The experience will pay off this fall as they look to contend for a winning season.

Lenape Indians
Players to watch: The entire starting lineup returns for Lenape, led by junior first singles Rhea Sethi. She has been in the top spot each of the past two years and posted an impressive 13-2 record as a sophomore. In addition to shining in team matches this fall, she has the potential to go far in the Burlington County Open, Olympic Conference Tournament and South Jersey Interscholastic Championships. Sophomore Isabella Cao earned the second singles job as a rookie and finished with nine victories, while senior Amanda Geraci played third singles and also had a winning record. Both doubles teams were strong as well and return intact: seniors Isabella Gigliotti and Bernadette Carney competed at first, while senior Olivia Helmlinger and junior Kaitlyn King were partners at second. Senior Arti Singh is another experienced doubles player who is capable of earning a spot anywhere in the lineup.
Outlook: The Indians went 10-5 and reached the sectional final for the second year in a row last fall. With a roster full of talent, experience and depth, they are headed for big things in 2021.

Moorestown Quakers
Players to watch: Moorestown lost first singles Paige O’Neil to graduation but brings back everyone else in the starting lineup. Senior Lia Streibich played singles for the first time in her varsity career and was sensational, finishing with a 12-2 record in the second spot. She will be a leading candidate to move into the No. 1 position. Senior Kaitlyn Burkhart also had a strong season at third singles, going 10-2 in team matches. Seniors Charlotte Morrison and Laura Sullivan went 8-4 as first doubles partners, while senior Maya Butani and sophomore Erica Zhang return after compiling a 9-2 record together, mostly at second doubles. On top of that, a few newcomers to the team and dedicated JV players from last year will also have a chance to break into the varsity lineup. One of those hopeful candidates is freshman Nilaa Ponnappan, who is a seasoned tournament player and trains year-round.
Outlook: The Quakers capped off an 11-3 season last fall by edging Shawnee, 3-2, for their third straight sectional title and 30th in the past 32 years. They expect to be a top contender once again in 2021.

Moorestown Friends Foxes
Players to watch: The entire singles lineup is back for Moorestown Friends, including senior Bella Pescatore, one of the premier players in South Jersey. After playing second singles the first two years of her career, Pescatore moved into the top spot in 2020 and went undefeated in limited action. She should be in contention for several individual titles in her final campaign. Senior Skye Mada is a three-year starter who played second singles as a junior, and Kathryn Sebastian is another senior leader who competed at third singles. Seniors Roma Jha, Nia Hipps and Katarina Kostpoulos and junior Julia Tourtellotte all contributed at doubles and are valuable veterans as well.
Outlook: The Foxes only played five matches last fall because of the pandemic and won all of them convincingly, including impressive victories over Moorestown and Lenape. They are looking forward to a full schedule this season and have lofty goals with Pescatore leading the way.

Paul VI Eagles
Players to watch: Seniors Sydney Crawbuck and Emma Foursha have been starters the past two years and are ready to lead the way for Paul VI in their final season in blue and white. Crawbuck moved up from second doubles to second singles in 2020 and should be in line for a singles position again, possibly even the No. 1 spot. Foursha also has both singles and doubles experience and will be a key player wherever she lands in the lineup. The other returning starter is sophomore Hailey Rowan, who flashed potential as a rookie. She was part of a doubles duo that compiled a 4-5 record. Rowan will be contending for a singles spot along with senior Rye Bates. Seniors Cara Colbert and Brandi Maconi are in the conversation for varsity doubles positions.
Outlook: The Eagles have a lot of spots to fill in the lineup but have a solid foundation with Crawbuck, Foursha and Rowan and hope to make progress throughout the fall.

Seneca Golden Eagles
Players to watch: Senior Abigail Lewis has been a starter for Seneca since her sophomore year and could be ready to move into the No. 1 singles spot in her final campaign. She competed at third singles last fall and won several big matches for the Golden Eagles. Two other seniors are the other returning starters. Hannah Diamond played mostly first doubles as a junior and posted an 8-4 record, while senior Alex Tortorelli also had a winning record competing mostly at second doubles. Sophomore Kim Wash earned valuable doubles experience as a rookie and should also play an important role. Promising newcomers include Laney Hackney, Izzy Austin and Jenny Yang.
Outlook: The Golden Eagles got hot toward the end of the 2020 season to reach the sectional final for the second year in a row and finished with a 6-6 record. If their returning players can successfully move up the ladder and varsity newcomers can fill in at doubles, another successful season should be in the cards.

Shawnee Renegades
Players to watch: Shawnee is excited to welcome back five starters, including three outstanding singles players and one of the premier players in South Jersey at the top of the lineup. Junior first singles Samantha Tepes proved that her fantastic freshman season was no fluke, as she went 14-1 last year and did not lose to a South Jersey opponent. Tepes should be in contention at the top tournaments this fall. Sophomore Natasha Sharnoff earned the second singles job as a rookie and compiled an impressive 12-3 record, while junior Maya Doshi had the same record at third singles. They could both play first singles on a lot of teams in the area. Senior Michaela Pierznik and junior Kalena Gatesman also return after competing at second doubles together and going 14-1 in a terrific season. Senior Mia Some is another potential contributor at doubles.
Outlook: Last season was another successful one for the Renegades, who went 13-2 and advanced to the sectional final for the second straight year before dropping a close match to Moorestown. It will be their goal to get back to the final and close the deal this time.

Washington Township Minutemaids
Players to watch: Sydney Cella broke into the varsity lineup for the first time as a junior and competed at second singles, putting together a solid season that featured a 5-5 record during team matches. She should be even better with a year of experience under her belt and could move into the vacant No. 1 spot for Washington Township. Two other starters return: seniors Raina Saraiya and Noelle Simmons, who played second doubles together. They notched four wins on the season, one of them coming at the Gloucester County Tournament. Seniors Ava Conti and Maddie Sanger are other veterans expected to fill out spots in the lineup. Sophomores Christina Baldosaro and Riley Borkowski are up-and-coming players to keep an eye on.
Outlook: The Minutemaids, who finished with a 4-6 record in 2020, will have a lineup with several varsity newcomers, but the program has been consistent in recent years and hopes to remain competitive.
