2021 Preview & Schedule

by Staff

Bishop Eustace Crusaders
Players to watch: Bishop Eustace is paced by a pair of Division I recruits in seniors Alex Senior and Cassie Chapjian. Senior, a forward, has led the team in scoring each of the past two years and had 24 goals and eight assists last fall. She is committed to Fairfield. Chapjian, a midfielder, chipped in a goal and five assists while adding stellar play at the defensive end of the field. She will continue her career at Sacred Heart. Senior Julie Faiola is a key returner on defense who also contributes on offense. Her leadership in the back will be critical as the Crusaders look for a replacement for all-state third-team goalie Mia Trottie, who graduated. Returning sophomore starter Josette DeGour and senior Reagan Burke will be key players, along with junior Blaire Sparks who was injured last year.
Outlook: Bishop Eustace may have finished 2020 with a rare losing record at 8-9, but the Crusaders played some of the top teams in the state and reached the sectional final before dropping a close game to Camden Catholic. The program always finds a way to stay competitive and this season should be no different.

Camden Catholic Fighting Irish
Players to watch: Olivia Bent-Cole and Ava Moore have been difference-makers for Camden Catholic since they stepped on the field as freshmen. Now the returning all-state first-team honorees are upperclassmen and ready to continue making life miserable for opponents. Bent-Cole, a junior midfielder, led the Irish with 21 goals to go with four assists and received all-state recognition for the second straight year. Moore, a junior midfielder, added seven goals and nine assists despite alternating between offensive and defensive roles depending on where she was needed. They lead a terrific core that also includes three seniors committed to college programs. Senior goalie Leah DiRenzo, who is headed to St. Joseph’s next year, had 65 saves and led a defense that allowed just nine goals all season. Senior Gianna Miller, who will also play Division I field hockey at Liberty, is a key defender in front of DiRenzo. Senior forward Payton Koss is the third college recruit and is committed to Montclair State. Juniors Libby Bell and Jacki Connolly and seniors Elayna Berrios, Emily Gallagher and Kaitlyn Didinger are other contributors at forward and in the midfield, along with sophomores Kayla Dever and Isabel Rotaeche. Senior Cecilia Mendez and sophomore Reagan Stauts are experienced defenders and junior Valerie Concepcion adds depth in goal.
Outlook: The Irish went 12-2-1 last fall, with both losses coming to Oak Knoll, the No. 1 team in New Jersey. They finished No. 4 in the state poll after reaching their fourth consecutive sectional final and winning their second in a row. Expectations remain high for 2021.

Cherokee Chiefs
Players to watch: Eight starters are back for Cherokee, including four seniors who will continue their careers at the next level. Midfielder Bella Mele, a leader at both ends of the field, had eight goals and six assists as a junior and is headed to the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. Senior forward Isabella Coluzzi is another potent scorer who had three goals and two assists despite missing most of her junior season with an injury. She is committed to Monmouth. Senior Alexa Ronning, a St. Joseph’s recruit, is another top player in the midfield, and the fourth college commit is senior Sarah Crysler, one of the best goalies in South Jersey. She made 211 saves last fall and is headed to Millersville. Senior forward Dani Gindville, a transfer from Washington Township, led the Minutemaids with 16 goals and six assists last year and should fit in seamlessly with the Chiefs. The talented senior class also includes three other playmakers on offense: Emma Wright (seven goals, three assists), Samantha Butkus (five goals, one assist) and Alexa Antonelli (three goals, three assists), along with solid defenders Paige Yocum and Anna Donaldson. Junior Erin St. John is also an offensive contributor.
Outlook: The Chiefs were competitive in almost every game last year and finished with a .500 record at 7-7. With so many key pieces back in the fold plus the addition of Gindville, 2021 is shaping up as a big season.

Cherry Hill East Cougars
Players to watch: The Cougars are excited to be led by an experienced and hardworking senior class. Included in that group is forward Marisa Rappaport, who scored a pair of goals last year. She will spark the Cherry Hill East attack along with junior Sami Bloom, a returning starter. The midfield will be controlled by senior Scout Pullano and returning starter Katie Bristow, a junior. Juliana Saidel is a returning starter on the back line and will anchor the defense.
Outlook: The Cougars are eager to get the 2021 season underway and figure to be much improved under new head coach Lisa Patrone, a former standout player at Washington Township and Rutgers who also served as an assistant coach at her former high school.

Cherry Hill West Lions
Players to watch: Cherry Hill West has a promising crop of returners led by seniors Emily Hazel and Abigail Sims. Hazel, a forward, has scored five goals each of the past two seasons and should be a key playmaker in front of the cage once again. Sims, meanwhile, will hold down the fort at the opposite end of the field. She earned the starting goalie job as a junior and performed well in the role, as she finished with 108 saves. Junior forward Mia Zaris will help to complement Hazel on offense and other contributors up front are senior Cara Mailhan and juniors Alena Stewart and Mackenzie DeSilvio. Senior Naomi Aristone is a top returner in the midfield and the defense is led by seniors Hailey Reiss, Catie Young, Dhani Slaughter and Aziza Ben Abdullah. Junior Hanna Porowski adds depth in the midfield and sophomore Rebecca Armstrong hopes to see time in the cage. A strong incoming freshman class has the potential to produce several star players who can help right away.
Outlook: The Lions dropped a close game to GCIT in the first round of the playoffs to finish last season with a 4-9-1 record. It would not be surprising to see them turn some of their close losses from 2020 into wins this fall behind their returners and talented rookies.

Clearview Pioneers
Players to watch: Clearview graduated a stellar senior class but has several talented returners ready to take over leadership of the team. Junior Gabby Andres had 14 goals and six assists and junior Darian DeLeo added 12 goals and two assists. They both made the all-conference second team as sophomores and will spark the offense as upperclassmen. Seniors Sofia Urzillo (eight goals) and Sam Johnson and juniors Brielle Sharkey (nine goals, five assists), Ryan Remaly (four goals, two assists) and Bella Cipparone (one goal, four assists) are other valuable playmakers. Anna Bruno, a captain last year as a junior, is an anchor on defense and junior Christina Unger is a candidate to take over as the starting goalie. Other returners expected to contribute are juniors Kendal Watermasysk and Grace Solomon.
Outlook: Last year was another successful one for the Pioneers, who posted a 10-3-1 record and reached the sectional final before it was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns. They have some important spots to fill but will look to remain contenders for division and sectional titles.

Eastern Vikings
Players to watch: Ryleigh Heck is the most prolific scorer at Eastern since Austyn Cuneo, who was the national leader with 328 career goals when her outstanding high school career ended in 2014. Heck, a senior forward, probably won’t pass Cuneo as the school record-holder, but she might have gotten close if her junior season had not been shortened due to the pandemic. In just 14 games last fall, she exploded for 76 goals to lead the state for the second year in a row and push her total to 198 in three seasons. Heck, who added 18 assists in 2020, is two goals away from becoming the seventh player in the nation to ever hit 200. Local field hockey fans will not want to miss the reigning New Jersey Player of the Year this season before she heads off to the University of North Carolina. The scary part is that Heck is far from the only standout returning for Eastern. Senior midfielder Izzy Bianco joined her on the all-state first team after scoring 12 goals to go with 27 assists. The Louisville commit also shined at the defensive end of the field. Senior forward Riley Hudson, who will continue her career at Ohio State, added 11 goals and 25 assists on her way to all-state third-team accolades. Senior Tess Herman, a Rowan commit, and junior Maura Somers are other offensive contributors. Senior Kylie Dawson, an Indiana commit, is the stalwart of Eastern’s terrific defense, which allowed just two goals last year. Juniors Devon Baraldi and Laci Coppola will also look to aid a defense that must break in a new starting goalie. Other returners hoping to leave their mark are senior Susie Miller, juniors Bella Spina and Brooke Ruiz, and sophomore Olivia White.
Outlook: Eastern didn’t skip a beat last year under Alex Marshall, who succeeded legendary coach Danyle Heilig and helped the Vikings go 14-0, claim their 22nd straight sectional title and finish as the No. 3 team in the state. They will be breaking in another new head coach this fall—longtime assistant Kerry Heck, Ryleigh’s mom, is replacing Marshall—and expectations will remain the same. This group is eager for the return of state championships and the Tournament of Champions and plans on contending for both.

Gloucester Catholic Rams
Players to watch: Junior Teagan O’Neill assumed the starting goalie job last year and responded with a strong season in which she registered 59 saves. The defense around her was also solid and brings back junior Adrianna Green and sophomores Kirra Kachur and Emily McGinn. Gloucester Catholic struggled to score last year but should be better at that end of the field with senior MacKenzie Boyle and sophomore Bridget Taney leading the way. Senior Cambrie Todd is a key player in the midfield and other returners expected to earn time are senior Ashley Smith, junior Alyssa Ristagno and sophomore Casey Green.
Outlook: The Rams hung tough in most of their games last fall and hope their perseverance pays off with a few wins as they continue to make strides in 2021 under new coach Brittany Cairns.

Haddonfield Bulldawgs
Players to watch: Haddonfield brings back a pair of all-conference playmakers in juniors Gianna Funari and Karlie Warner. Funari, a midfielder/forward, had six goals and one assist on her way to first-team honors. Warner, a forward, led the Bulldawgs with 11 goals and chipped in three assists in a breakout season that earned her second-team accolades. Senior forward Abby Reenock and sophomore forward Lena Stolarick will also be counted on for making things happen in front of the cage. Senior Charlotte Goldman finished with a goal and five assists last year but is more known for her defensive instincts. She leads the D along with juniors Allie Brown and Brynn Bickel, and backing them up is junior goalie Moira Geiger. She has been the starter since her freshman year and had 155 saves as a sophomore. Seniors Katie Kehner and Natasha Moskovitz and juniors Julie Marthins, Emmy Barrett and Chloe Genzel are other dependable veterans. There are also a host of sophomores who could potentially make an impact.
Outlook: Last season was another impressive one for Haddonfield, which went 12-5, played for a sectional title for the sixth year in a row and finished as the No. 12 team in the state. The standards are high for this program and the Bulldawgs hope to live up to them again this fall.

Kingsway Dragons
Players to watch: Tori Griffiths is poised for a huge final season as she looks to cap her fantastic high school career. She has led Kingsway in scoring each of the past three seasons and had 21 goals and 16 assists in just 11 games as a junior to make the all-state and all-conference first teams. Griffiths is committed to Liberty University. Senior midfielder Peyton Rieger is another Division I recruit who is headed to Temple. She had two goals and six assists last year and was an integral piece of the Dragons’ staunch defense to earn all-conference first-team honors. Other standouts on offense are junior midfielders Colleen Finnan (14 goals, three assists) and Ella Stephenson (one goal, eight assists), along with sophomore forward Sabrina McGroarty, who had 12 goals and eight assists in a strong rookie campaign. Junior Allie Patel and sophomore Mary Wordelmann are other experienced midfielders. Senior goalie Maddy Ferry turned away 43 shots and recorded seven shutouts to repeat as an all-conference second-teamer. The defense in front of her includes senior Erin Gray and sophomore MK Finnan. Sophomore Madison Rothwein and juniors Kerri DiBella, Dakota Freas and Gabby Carcione are other contributors.
Outlook: The Dragons outscored their opponents 70-4 last year to go 11-0, the third season in a row they did not suffer a regular-season loss. With Griffiths leading a talented veteran group, the No. 6 team in the final state poll has high hopes for 2021 as well.

Lenape Indians
Players to watch: Lenape boasts a talented senior class, which includes four players committed to continuing their hockey careers at the next level. Senior midfielder Lina Neilson (five goals, one assist) will bring her skills to the Division I level at Temple. Neilson is a vocal leader on the field and a key player both offensively and defensively. Senior goalie Erika Roura recently committed to playing at Ramapo. Although she was the backup goalie behind standout Kayleigh Kmet, who graduated, Roura’s work on her club team has Lenape confident in her abilities to defend the cage. Senior midfielder/defender Katelyn Cardinale is the third college recruit and is headed to Concordia University Wisconsin. Gianna Monaco, who will focus on lacrosse at the University of Florida, is another star player for Lenape. Monaco is versatile on the field hockey field, as she can shine on defense or move up to forward and put up big offensive numbers like she does in lacrosse. She led the Indians with 11 goals to go with four assists as a junior. Lenape suffered a huge loss in the defensive end this season as senior Lauren Conroy, who is committed to Kent State, suffered an ACL tear in the spring. Surgery and her recovery will sideline her for her senior season, but she has already taken on the role of being a mentor for the underclassmen and as captain, will be a leader on the sideline. Lenape will also lean on experienced seniors Bryn Iuliano and Abby Niemela, junior Alyssa Weber and sophomores Brooke Halfpenny and Julia Moon, who both started as freshmen. Seniors Hayden Merle, Emily Farbaniec and Tessa Pofahl round out a strong varsity lineup.
Outlook: The Indians went 5-6 last season and all six of their losses were by one or two goals, including a 1-0 defeat to Shawnee in the sectional quarterfinals. It would not be surprising to see them win more of those close games this fall on their way to a successful season.

Moorestown Quakers
Players to watch: Senior midfielder Ava Cickavage has been a key player throughout her career at Moorestown and is looking to go out on a high note before moving on to the Division I level at Wake Forest. A contributor at both ends of the field, she had 14 goals and seven assists last year to make the all-state first team. Junior forward Izzy Leese is another dynamic scorer who had 13 goals and five assists. Senior forward Gigi Testa, an Ursinus commit, will also be counted on offensively along with senior Samantha Miller and sophomore Paige Hummel. Junior back Ava Tilger made the all-South Jersey second team and other experienced defenders are seniors Ava Sassano and Asha Madison. Senior Catherine Parker saw time in the cage and hopes to take over as the full-time goalie. Elizabeth Maguire, Madison Berardi and Cathryn Bogart are juniors expected to take on bigger roles.
Outlook: Moorestown was once again one of the premier teams in New Jersey last year, finishing No. 7 in the state poll. The Quakers went 8-2—with the losses coming by a combined four goals—and reached the sectional final before it was canceled due to COVID-19 issues. They look like sectional and possibly state title contenders this fall.

Moorestown Friends Foxes
Players to watch: Moorestown Friends will have a new look this year after the retirement of longtime coach Danielle Dayton, who served the program for 17 years. Dayton, who is still the school’s athletic director, has been replaced on the sideline by Julie Rothwell, one of her assistants. Rothwell inherits a team led by senior goalie Ava Carlson, a three-year starter who made 85 saves in just seven games last year. She will continue her career at Dartmouth. Senior Jordan Grabelle is a top defender in front of Carlson. Junior Tia Obermeier had three goals as a sophomore and could be ready to emerge as the Foxes’ go-to scorer. Seniors Kendall Borbi and Ella Miller are other offensive contributors. Other experienced veterans expected to play big roles are seniors Vani Hanamirian, Elysa McKinney, Lauren Articolo, Julianna Boreas, Abby Taylor and Ashleigh Sorokin and junior Sumin Kim.
Outlook: The Foxes posted a 5-2 record in limited action last fall and are looking forward to playing a full schedule. The program seems to be competitive year in and year out and that is not likely to change under Rothwell.

Paul VI Eagles
Players to watch: A four-year varsity contributor, senior midfielder Erin DiSandro has been a leader on and off the field for Paul VI and will once again fill that role this fall. She had three goals and seven assists as a junior and led the way in a playoff win over Our Lady of Mercy. She is joined on offense by senior Mary Myslinski, junior Katie Gleason and sophomore Tori Morrison. Senior Gianna Strano is a linchpin on defense and senior Olivia McDaniels will look to earn the starting goalie job. Senior Lauren DiDomenico and junior Sophia Reitano are other valuable veterans.
Outlook: The Eagles held their own against a challenging schedule in 2020 and finished with a 4-9 record after reaching the sectional semifinals. With an experienced core, they should remain competitive.

Seneca Golden Eagles
Players to watch: Seneca graduated a special senior class but is thrilled to welcome back two Division I recruits to lead the way this fall. Senior Tess Strittmatter is an anchor on defense and aided the offense with six goals and eight assists as a junior. She made the all-South Jersey second team and is committed to Lehigh. Senior forward Sophia Abate was third on the team with 11 goals to go with five assists and is a top returner on offense. She will continue her career at Columbia. Other talented returners are sophomore goalie Kelsey Besser, who made 60 saves as a freshman, and sophomore Kyleigh Welusz, a returning starter on defense. Senior midfielder Maddie Epps will also be tasked with creating scoring opportunities after recording five goals and two assists.
Outlook: The Golden Eagles captured their fourth straight sectional title last year on their way to a 13-2-1 record and a No. 9 ranking in the state. There are certainly some big shoes to fill but they will continue to set lofty goals.

Shawnee Renegades
Players to watch: Shawnee was hit hard by graduation but still has a solid core in place. One of the top returners is senior forward/midfielder Skylar Santucci, who had three goals and five assists. She will continue her career in the Big Ten at Michigan State. Junior forward Emily Cavicchio could be ready for a featured role on offense after finding the cage four times as a sophomore, and other contributors to the attack are seniors Hannah Doyle and Anna Larzelere and junior Kayla Gray. Senior Melanie Craig is a key returner in the midfield and experienced defenders are senior Bria Williams and junior Brooke Summerville. Senior Sophia Bartasius saw time in goal, recording 49 saves, and will look to take on the job on a full-time basis. Seniors Allison Higgins and Addy O’Shea, junior Madisyn Wingate and sophomore Alex Rubano will all look to make an impact as well.
Outlook: Shawnee finished No. 8 in the state rankings as it posted a 10-3-1 record and reached the sectional final, with two losses coming to Eastern and the other to Moorestown by a goal. The Renegades have some spots to fill but it is never wise to overlook this program.

Washington Township Minutemaids
Players to watch: Washington Township suffered a huge loss when leading scorer Dani Gindville moved and transferred to Cherokee for her senior season. The good news is that senior midfielder Grace Kim is back and should continue to shine at both ends of the field. She finished with seven goals and four assists a year ago. Senior forward Izzie Donia is another returning playmaker and senior Taylor Knox joins Kim as a key veteran in the midfield. Senior Maddie Davis emerged as the starting goalie in 2020 and registered 68 saves, and senior Jess Knox will also be competing for time in the cage. Sophomore Kendall Piperata returns as a tough, cool defender. Senior Alexa Humphreys and sophomore Brooke Alessandrini add depth at multiple positions, and several freshmen may get on the field right away and make a significant impact.
Outlook: The Minutemaids’ 5-6 record last year included three losses by two or fewer goals as they gave just about everyone on the schedule a battle. They are rebuilding this season but hope to stay competitive and play spoiler in a very difficult conference.
