Mara Kray, Mt. Laurel, an 8th grader at Harrington Middle School, along with guidance counselor Sharon Sheehan, have put together a Fun Run 5K on Oct. 24 to raise funds to research Cystic Fibrosis. Kray herself is afflicted with the disease, forcing her to attend school at times wearing a face mask in order to avoid germs. She also undergoes daily medical treatments, and often requires trips to the hospital so she can breathe through a machine. The disease also claimed the life of her brother.

Jennifer Silver
Cherry Hill
Jennifer Silver, 14, a Cherry Hill East freshman, is organizing the sixth annual Bowling for Bears event to be held at the Cherry Hill Playdrome on Dec. 5. The nonprofit, which Silver created when she was nine, provides thousands of children in need with teddy bears for the holidays.

Bob Barnshaw
Washington Township
In celebration of Constitution Day on September 17th, Washington Township High School juniors Mary Gentile and Zachary Dzierzgowski surprised their Social Studies teacher Bob Barnshaw by having a flag fly in honor of Barnshaw over the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. U.S. Senator Robert Menendez helped them receive their request.

Dr. Lawrence A. Ragone
Cherry Hill
Dr. Lawrence A. Ragone, founder of the South Jersey Eye Center, which offers free and low-cost eye care to underprivileged populations, recently passed the 300,000 patients served mark since opening in 1961. The SJEC also runs a Mobile Vision Clinic, a 34-foot clinic- on-wheels.

Fanyi Meng
Cherry Hill
Fanyi Meng, an 8th grader at Rosa International Middle School, was the only middle school student to apply for the Cherry Hill Food and Outreach Council's summer volunteer program and, over six weeks, dedicated 85 hours of community service.

Taylor Kane
Mount Laurel
Taylor Kane, 14, Harrington Middle, recently was named regional winner of the Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship Program. Taylor raised more than $23,000 towards researching Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALD), which took the lives of both her father and her uncle. Taylor is also a carrier of the disease.

Jeanne DelColle
Marlton
Jeanne DelColle of Marlton was named BCIT Teacher 2010 Teacher of the Year by NJ Council for the Humanities. She will receive the award at a ceremony in the Montclair Art Museum on Oct. 20. The award is given annually to an elementary, middle school or high school teacher. DelColle is a history teacher at the BCIT Westhampton Campus.

Joe Murphy
Voorhees
Joe Murphy, Eastern Girls Varsity Basketball Coach, received the Coach of the Year Award from the New Jersey Coaches Scholastic Association. He learned of his award in early September. His team, historically not a very competitive squad, went 25-4 and claimed the 2010 South Jersey sectional title.

Carol Hard
Marlton
Carol Hard has rescued nearly 300 puppies via her Marlton-based nonprofit organization, Puppies and More. Hard rescues mother dogs and their puppies from high-kill shelters, primarily in the poorer regions of Ohio and Kentucky where people don’t typically spay or neuter their dogs.

Lorraine Agnew
Collingswood
Local children’s author Lorraine Agnew, whose fifth and latest release is Melissa the Magnificent, is donating a portion of the proceeds of her book sales at this year’s Collingswood Book Festival to the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School in Maple Shade’s playground fund.

Jimmy Midkiff
Cherry Hill
Eagle Scout Jimmy Midkiff, 16, raised $4,000 to fund a picnic facility for the Cherry Hill East Babe RuthField, which he also designed and built. He formed a team of volunteers to help with the construction, which took three days. It opened at the end of August.

John S. Flack, Jr
Marlton
John S. Flack, Jr. of Marlton received the 2010 Burlington County Freeholders’ Historic Preservation Award for chronicling the history of Evesham Township through his personal website that describes his boyhood in the Woodstream neighborhood. His vintage photographs catalogue the dramatic changes that have taken place in the local landscape.
