2019 High School Spring Sports Preview

by Staff

BISHOP EUSTACE CRUSADERS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Junior Adam Kinsley has been a key varsity player since his freshman season, moving from first doubles as a rookie to first singles last year. The experience he gained should pay dividends this spring. Sophomore Joe Semon played first doubles as a freshman and could be ready to move into a singles spot. Junior Noah Staashaught and sophomore Declan Burke are other returning starters who played second doubles together. Both doubles teams earned all-conference second-team accolades.
OUTLOOK: After posting a 4-8 record during a rebuilding season, the Crusaders bring back four starters and hope to make progress in 2019.

CHEROKEE CHIEFS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: A big portion of the starting lineup is back for Cherokee, including its talented No. 1 singles player. Sophomore Arjun Mannan earned the top spot last spring as a rookie and reached the third round of the state singles tournament and the semifinals of the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships. He was also named to the all-conference first team. Senior Sufi Zekaria played second singles last year and will also be counted on. Senior Blake Sokol is returning from first doubles and sophomore Vijay Ramu played second doubles as a rookie. Sophomore Salvatore Basile also saw time as a freshman.
OUTLOOK: The Chiefs’ 9-8 record featured a run to the sectional semifinals. With so much talent and experience, they look like a team to watch in 2019.

CHERRY HILL EAST COUGARS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Adam Yu took over the No. 1 singles spot last year as a junior and responded with a terrific season. He reached the final of the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships (SJIC), competed in the state singles tournament and made the all-conference second team. He is poised for a big final season. Senior Kevin Hu played second singles and made the allconference second team, while junior Jeffrey Xi held down the No. 3 spot and made the round of 16 at the SJIC. Seniors Arnav Gupta and Max Sobel were first doubles partners and earned all-conference second-team accolades. Seniors Harel Tillinger and Ben Vender and junior Fred Yi will also look to contribute.
OUTLOOK: The Cougars’ 13-2 season featured their third straight trip to the sectional final and a share of the Olympic Conference American Division title. With the entire singles lineup and two other starters returning, they will set lofty goals in 2019.

CHERRY HILL WEST LIONS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: A host of returners is back for Cherry Hill West, including four sophomores who started as freshmen. Nathan Harrison earned the No. 1 singles spot as a rookie and was followed at No. 2 by Jared Sinrich. Sophomores Jack McCandless and Colin Chance contributed at doubles in their first year. Senior Ben Isakovich and junior Khylei Neal both saw time at third singles, while senior Oskar Jablonski is an experienced doubles player. Another sophomore, Ian Dolan, filled in at doubles and could be ready for a bigger role.
OUTLOOK: Last year may have been a struggle in the standings for the Lions, but there is no question their young players got better facing tough competition and that should pay off this spring.

CLEARVIEW PIONEERS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Martin Lacsamana’s memorable freshman season at Clearview included the Gloucester County singles title, as he became the first player in school history to win the tournament. He also reached the round of 16 at the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships and competed in the state singles tournament while manning the No. 1 spot for the Pioneers all season. It will be exciting to see what he can do for an encore. The rest of the starting lineup also returns, including senior Logan Spinney and sophomore Kyle Deacon, who played second and third singles, respectively. Seniors Ryan Weiss and Nick Pirrotta were partners at first doubles, while senior Sean Flannery and junior James Roberto teamed up at second doubles.
OUTLOOK: The Pioneers went 8-8—improving by five wins over the year before—and reached the sectional quarterfinals in 2018. With Lacsamana leading the way, they should contend for a winning record and hope to be in the mix for a county title as well.

EASTERN VIKINGS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Eastern graduated its No. 1 singles player but junior Pranay Jaggi appears ready to take over the role. He played second singles as a sophomore and reached the final of the Camden County Tournament. Seniors Jaisal Khatiwala and Adrian Condes played first doubles together last year and both could be candidates to move into a singles spot. Other returning starters are seniors Max Abrams and Abhi Kulkarni, who played second doubles. Senior Kareem Abdelkader and junior Sudish Devadiga will look to earn starting positions as well, along with senior Dom Stella, who returns to the lineup after missing last season.
OUTLOOK: The Vikings reached the sectional quarterfinals in 2018 and finished with a 7-6 record. Jaggi is a promising singles player and there is plenty of senior leadership, so they should remain competitive.

HADDONFIELD BULLDAWGS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Junior Will Oberholtzer has been the No. 1 singles player for Haddonfield since his freshman season and it will be exciting to see what he can accomplish as an upperclassman. Last year he claimed Colonial Conference and Camden County titles, reached the round of 16 at the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships and competed in the state singles tournament. He posted a 34-10 record last year and is 57-26 for his career. Senior Teo Lupinetti competed at third singles and advanced to the semifinals of both the conference and county tournaments. He went 29-9 and enters his final season with 79 career wins. Seniors Nico Cohen and Alex Dante played first doubles together and brought home conference and county championships. In both finals they defeated Haddonfield’s second doubles team of senior Mo Jishi and junior Pierre Yan. Cohen and Dante also qualified for the state doubles tournament.
OUTLOOK: The Bulldawgs extended their streak of sectional championships to 16 in a row last year, reached the Group II state final and finished with a 23-9 record. With almost the entire starting lineup back in the fold, they will again have high hopes.

KINGSWAY DRAGONS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Six starters return for Kingsway, including senior Jake Mostoller, who has played No. 1 singles the last two years. He reached the Gloucester County final last season and competed in the state singles tournament. Junior Ethan Bentley is another key returner who earned the third singles spot as a sophomore. Seniors Will Pollick and Domenic Marino had an outstanding year at first doubles, as they won the county title, won a match at the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships and qualified for the state doubles tournament. Senior Justin Steward and junior Troy Mostoller were partners at second doubles.
OUTLOOK: The Dragons’ list of accomplishments in 2018 included their second straight division championship, the team title at the county tournament and their first-ever berth in the South Jersey Group IV semifinals. With so many important pieces back, this is shaping up to be another big year.

LENAPE INDIANS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Lenape suffered major losses to graduation, none bigger than No. 1 singles Jack Lavin, who was the champion at the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships (SJIC) and reached the fourth round of the state singles tournament. The good news is that junior Sreejith Nair should be ready to move into the top spot after playing second singles as a sophomore. Nair gained valuable experience in the SJIC and state singles tournament and faced tough competition throughout the year. Senior Jimmy Li is another key returner who could push for the first position after playing second and third the last two seasons. Senior Brandon Hsiao, who played first doubles and made the all-conference first team, is the only other returning starter. Senior Allen Sha and juniors Sidharth Peri, Aidan Cashin and Ahbi Chauhan are other returners expected to contribute.
OUTLOOK: The Indians repeated as sectional champions, shared the Olympic Conference American Division title and finished with an 18-3 record in a terrific 2018 season. They might not be at that level again but can be counted on for another successful season.

MOORESTOWN QUAKERS
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Moorestown only returns two starters, but one of them is junior Peter Leese, who seized the first singles spot as a sophomore and shined in the role. He reached the semifinals of the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships (SJIC) and won a match at the state singles tournament. Junior Sahil Tilak played second doubles and made the final of the SJIC. Junior Sean Kirk filled in at singles last year and should be a key contributor as well. Junior CJ Mascoveto and sophomores Michael Ju, Naveen Shah and Sohan Vidiayala will also look to earn starting positions.
OUTLOOK: The Quakers went 22-3 overall and did not lose to any teams from South Jersey on their way to their second straight sectional championship. With Leese leading the charge, they expect to be in the mix again.

MOORESTOWN FRIENDS FOXES
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Three starters are back for Moorestown Friends, including senior Liam Schenk, who moved into the No. 1 spot last year, reached the round of 16 at the South Jersey Interscholastic Championships and won a match at the state singles tournament. Sophomore Mitch Desman earned the third singles position as a rookie and should continue to improve this spring. Another sophomore, Nolan Schenk, played second singles but will have to sit out the season after suffering a serious knee injury during soccer season. Both Schenk brothers were named to the all-Friends Schools League first team. Junior Matthew Cherfane is another returning starter who played first doubles.
OUTLOOK: The Foxes went 9-8 and extended their streak of sectional final appearances to five in a row last year. If they can develop strong doubles play and find a solid third singles player, there is a good chance they can keep the streak alive in 2019.

PAUL VI EAGLES
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Will Lyons graduated after playing first singles the last three years, so Paul VI will need a new leader to emerge. Senior Ryan McShane is a good candidate, as he started at first doubles as a sophomore and moved up to second singles last year. Junior Josh Roney returns after playing third singles, and sophomore Nino Castorio could be in the mix for a singles spot following a solid rookie season in which he played first doubles. Junior JP Moleski and sophomore Shane Rutkowski are other returning starters who played second doubles together.
OUTLOOK: With five starters who gained valuable experience back in the fold, the Eagles hope to improve on last year’s 3-11 record.

SENECA GOLDEN EAGLES
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior Stephen Oliva has been a varsity starter for Seneca since his sophomore season and could be ready to take over at first singles. He played doubles as a sophomore and moved up to the second sin- gles spot last year. Junior Nick Webb and senior Colin Boisvert— who both started at doubles and made the allconference first team—could also be in the mix for singles positions. Senior Brett Thomas and junior Toby Megaw are other experienced returners looking for expanded roles, and sophomores Vince Abate, Ben Yaroch and Paul Paetow are hoping to contribute as well. Freshman Landon Wall should also give Seneca a boost.
OUTLOOK: The Golden Eagles posted an 11-5 record, claimed a division title and made a run to the sectional semifinals last year. Although there are some spots to fill in the lineup, this program always seems to stay competitive.

SHAWNEE RENEGADES
PLAYERS TO WATCH: The entire starting lineup returns for Shawnee, including senior singles players Aditya Deshmukh, Jacob Delancy and James Murray. Deshmukh earned the No. 1 spot for the first time as a junior and held his own against some of the best competition in South Jersey. Sophomores Joshua Dubler and Anshui Shetty played first doubles together as rookies and posted a winning record in team play. Junior Christian Vasta and sophomore Nicholas Frasetto also return after partnering at second doubles. Several other experienced players will push for spots as well, including senior Nick Benzanis and juniors Thomas Juliano and Ashwin Nayak. OUTLOOK: The Renegades’ 9-7 record featured a berth in the sectional semifinals. The experience of that playoff run should pay dividends this fall and Shawnee could be a dangerous opponent under new head coach Drew Wagner.

WASHI NGTON TOWNSHIP MINUTEMEN
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Nick Curcio earned the No. 1 singles spot as a junior and will look to lead the way again for Washington Township in his senior campaign. He made the quarterfinals of the Gloucester County Tournament and is poised for a strong final season. Seniors Jeffrey Ferraino and Raj Saraiya played first doubles together and placed third in the county. They could be candidates to move into singles spots. Senior Gabe Donados is another experienced returner who figures to land a starting position as well.
OUTLOOK: The Minutemen went 4-11 and lost in the first round of the playoffs last year in the final season for popular head coach Mike Schuenemann, who lost his battle with cancer in January. A new head coach had not been named as of press time.
