Suburban Family captured some of the most commonly sought statistics about breast cancer and spoke to some of the area’s leading professionals about screening for the disease and how new technology is bringing hope to so many.

What are the risk factors contributing to breast cancer?
The general risk factors are increasing age and being female. Also, family history, inherited  factors, obesity, high breast density, not having children and early menstrual history or late menopause. Additionally, a prior history  of breast cancer and certain noncancerous breast diseases are risk factors. The five-year survival rate for women with early breast c ancer Stage 0 or Stage 1 is close to 100 percent.

What are the new technologies in breast imaging?
South Jersey Radiology offers both 2D and 3D mammography, also known as digital breast tomosynthesis. Th is is an FDA-approved advanced technology using images taken at multiple angles. Basically what that means is we are able to do mammogra phy and a breast ultrasound, and with that an ultrasound-guided breast biopsy and breast MRI biopsy. Because we do all of those imaging procedures and biopsies associated with them, that means we get our own feedback and have a team of breast imaging specialists reading your scans.
