Mary Byatt
Washington Township
Birches Elementary fifth grade teacher Byatt (pictured) was recently named the 2014-2015 New Jersey Elementary Social Studies Teacher of the Year. She was recognized for her history expertise, innovative technological teaching materials and encouraging her students to think with an open mind. She also earned the title of New Jersey History Teacher of the Year for the 2012-2013 school year, as well as Gloucester County Teacher of the Year in 2004.

Kathryn Morken
Morken, a South Valley Elementary school teacher, included the earthquake in Nepal that killed over 8,000 people into her third grade curriculum. Hoping her students would realize they could make a difference, she gave them a fundraising goal of $360. Her students went above and beyond and were able to raise $3,000.

Luke Alvarez
Cherry Hill
Carusi Middle School teacher Alvarez used his unique surfboard crafting abilities to donate a hand-made surfboard to They Will Surf Again, a program helping those with spinal cord injuries get back in the water. The board—which features holes for rails and the capacity for two to ride—was crafted free of charge by Alvarez in his backyard surf shop. To support him in his project, Alvarez’s students raised money for a surfboard bag.

Shadeed Abdul-Salaam
Abdul-Salaam, a 37-year-old Cherokee graduate, recently received the Woodrow Wilson Georgia Teaching Fellowship. With the fellowship, Abdul-Salaam will be mentoring and teaching children in the Atlanta area about science, technology, engineering and math. The fellowship not only allows the South Jersey native to teach and mentor children; it also includes admission to a master’s degree program at a partner university, a $30,000 stipend and preparation for teaching certification.
