Picture Perfect
The beauty treatments offered that will have you radiating with confidence this season.

by Josephine Cusumano

As the weather heats up, so do our facial routines, as we aim for more radiant  and healthier skin despite the sun’s harsh rays. Yet, serums, masks and more can only do so much—especially when we’re looking for something more.

Suburban Family magazine tapped into a few of our local beauty experts to learn more about the treatments you can’t get at the drugstore and most importantly,  what you can do to properly protect your skin while enjoying the summer season.

How does Kybella work?

“It’s an [injectable treatment] that emulsifies the fat [in the neck], destroys it and also retracts the tissues  so instead of it being less loose, it will come tighter to the chin. It’s a huge difference, it changes your profile. Instead of a double  chin, now all of a sudden you have a chiseled profile. Usually, you do two or three therapies, but once it’s done, it’s done. That fat is not going to come back. There is no restriction for this and it’s easy to do during the summer.”

How long do natural lip enhancements versus synthetic lip enhancements last—especially during the summer— and how can patients be careful so as to avoid their lips looking unnatural?

“The most effective natural lip enhancement method involves the injection of hyaluronic acid-based fillers into an individual’s lips. There are countless other filler options that can also be utilized, with the choice ultimately dependent upon the outcome that the patient would like to see.

“Volbella has been  found to improve fine lip lines— primarily around the border of the upper and lower lip and can enhance the outline of the lips as a whole as well. Vollure is used for enhancing lips, giving them a more voluminous profile. Juvéderm is another popular option for patients  aiming for more youthful and fuller-looking lips that will still appear natural. Filler lifespan is different for each filler and can vary from patient to patient.

“The best way for patients to ensure that their lips look natural at the conclusion of a procedure is for the m to have this treatment performed by an experienced professional that is versed in the anatomical structures of the mouth and face  altogether.”

How should a patient prepare their skin for a Glycolic peel during the summer?

“As an esthetician, I do not recommend chemical peels during the summer due to the intensity of the sun. However, if you proceed with peels as an  option for exfoliation during summer months, preparation should include a change in your skincare regimen. Your new skincare products  should be exfoliating the skin and fostering skin cell turnover and you need to use sunscreen as your moisturizer.

“Not only should you be a faithful wearer of SPF, it should be a minimum of SPF 35. You should also carry it with you so if you see yourself being in the sun for long periods of time, you are protected. Another thing to incorporate is a hat that will act as an additional physical blocker of sun rays. If you are willing to commit to these steps you will get the best benefits of chemical peels and see improvements.”

What should clients consider if they’re looking to do permanent eyebrows, lip color and eyeliner during the summertime—especially when  their skin tone changes during the summer months?

“If you are considering permanent makeup during the summer months, it is best to have i t done prior to your face being tan. Having permanent eyebrows done while tan will make permanent eyebrows appear dark- er once the tan h as faded. While healing and once healed, we recommend a sun hat for the beach, to fully protect them. This will help to prevent premature fading. Also, it is recommended that sunblock is not to be used until two-weeks post-procedure or until the brows are fully healed. Following the healing, sunscreen is recommended every day, all year round.

“Permanent eyeliner is not an issue in the summer months,  since eyelids are generally shielded by sunglasses. Permanent lip procedures are fine to have applied in the summer months, but must b e protected from extreme exposure to sun rays for a two-week period, while healing. Again, a large sun hat can be very protective. Swimming in an ocean or a pool is not recommended for two weeks following any permanent makeup procedure. This can cause fading, possible irritation as well as possible infection.”

When is the best time for Botox treatments during the summertime in order to prevent any foreseeable damage from the sun?

“Botox can be given at any point during the summer, but it will not prevent any sun dam- age to your skin. Men and women are getting Botox in  their 20s and 30s to minimize the development of future wrinkles. Patients in their 40s and beyond are using it to treat the wrinkles they currently have and prevent the progression of those unwanted facial lines. “Botox can be given every three months to help keep that youthful look. I recommend using Botox in combination with our hydrafacial and the upgraded serums to give you that summer glow you are  looking for. Hydrafacials can be done every month regardless of your skin type.”

Where is the platelet rich plasma (PRP) treatment injected in the face?

“PRP is an amazing option to be injected as a filler because it is 100 percent natural and we have up to 8 milliliters to work with. … When I do a ‘PRP Facelift,’ I analyze and mark each patient accordingly. I inject the PRP where the volume loss is most prevalent. Sometimes this is in the cheeks along the zygomatic bone, other times it’s a straightforward injection into the nasolabial folds and marionette lines. We can even use PRP to create a sharp jawline or fill out tear trough depressions.

“The biggest benefit of PRP is that once it is injected, it stimulates your body’s stem cells to produce more  collagen and elastin. This process utilizes your body’s natural functions to correct volume loss. PRP has been used for over 30 years  in many areas of medicine and continues to produce amazing results.”

What’s the best way to protect the skin from the sun following a vampire facial and how long should a patient wait be- fore sun exposure?

“For one week following the vampire facial procedure, it is best to not wear any makeup, if possible, and to consistently put on sunscreen of SPF 50. They should wait at least 48 hours prior to sun exposure and just be vigilant with SPF.”

What are some of the best Juvéderm treatments to keep the face plump and healthy during the summer?

“Juvéderm is appropriate for any area of the face, including lines and creases around the mouth, nose and forehead. The procedure can be used for facial contouring. Juvéde rm can also be used to enhance the size and shape of the lips. All of these areas will show distinct improvement after treatment with Juvéderm filler.

“Juvéderm is likely a good option for you if you are dissatisfied with the way your face is aging—namely, if you dislike th e wrinkles and creases that have surfaced. Juvéderm may also be right for you if you feel that your lips need augmentation.”

What is Pellevé?

“Pellevé uses radiofrequency energy to break down collagen in the dermal layer of the skin. The body responds by growi ng new collagen, which helps to soften lines and wrinkles on the surface of the skin. The treatment is virtually painless and feels much like  a hot stone massage—very  relaxing. “Pellevé is recommended for all skin colors with mild to moderate facial wrinkles who would like to  revitalize their skin for a smoother, more youthful look. Immediately following treatment, you can apply makeup and return to normal activities. It is a great treatment for summer since there are no restrictions to sunlight exposure (like there are for IPL or peels), although we always recommend using broad spectrum SPF on a daily basis.”

What are the facts about eyelash extensions?

“Eyelash extensions are individual strands of synthetic fibers made to replicate a natural eyelash. [They] lengthen and thicken your own natural eyelashes. Extensions will last the length of the natural growth cycle of your own eyelashes and fall out with your natural lash. Depending on your activity and day-to-day routine, re fills should only be required every two to four weeks. The actual application process usually takes about two hours for a full set and 50 minutes for a refill.

“The biggest myth is that lash extensions ruin your own lashes. They do not. If applied correctly and proper materials are used, they are safe and do not ruin the health of your natural lashes. Eyelash extensions need about 48 hours to dry, but after that, you should be able to resume all normal day-to-day activities such as working out and going to the beach.”
