Editor’s Note: September, 2013

by Colleen Patrice Clark--Executive Managing Editor

I would ask if things have calmed down since the kids are back in class, but that’s a question inevitably answered with either a sarcastic “Yeah, sure” or a “no” and a nervous laugh. Do things ever slow down once summer ends? When I walked my daughter to the bus stop this morning, I was shocked by the chill in the air. We just finished up our back-to-school shopping (or so I thought) and now it hits me that she’s going to need a new jacket, but not just one; she’ll need a jacket for fall and a new one for winter. And gloves. Probably a new hat. Maybe some new sweaters. Suddenly I realize not being able to find the right sized glue stick during our back-to-school hunt was the least of my shopping woes.

If this sounds familiar, then you’ll definitely want to check out our annual Fall Fashion photo spread on Page 24 to get some ideas for where you can complete this Round 2 of shopping. This year’s group of models, ranging from ages 5 to 17, showed us the latest trends and styles—kid and mom approved—that’ll ensure they’re the best dressed at all your outings this fall.

You’ll also find in this month’s issue an informative look at the advantages of a private school education. We’re fortunate to live in an area where even our public schools rank among the best, so we have to wonder what kind of edge still comes with private schooling. Turn to Page 18 to find out.

And on our Art of Living Well side, you’ll find a plethora of tips on how to maintain your health (and beauty) for decades to come, but I’d be sure to read Easing Eye Strain, which focuses on a growing issue that many people don’t even realize they face—eye problems and body aches resulting from spending the bulk of 9-to-5 in front of a computer screen.

As we look ahead, it’s hard to believe we’ll be wrapping up 2013 shortly, but it means some of our best issues are ahead of us, starting next month with our always-inspiring feature of area women who won their battle with breast cancer.

Warmly,
Colleen Patrice Clark
