California Closets

Custom Order
California Closets is creating custom spaces and organized living in homes across South Jersey.

Have you ever imagined having your own craft room, or a media center with floor-to-ceiling shelves? What about a professional home office to kickstart your own business? California Closets, a leader in designing organized spaces, serves the community through two offices in New Jersey: the main office and manufacturing site in Cranbury, and a brand new showroom along Mount Laurel’s Route 73.

The company specializes in maximizing space and improving function throughout all the rooms of your home, while maintaining a dignified sense of style. Experts at California Closets can transform cluttered closets, jammed garages, messy pantries and more into practical, ordered spaces that cater to clients’ individual needs.

“This is a family business. My dad, Dan Nili, started the franchise in 1986 and we have been running it ever since,” says Eric Nili, California Closets’ sales manager for the past eight years.

“Everything that we do is custom made, which means it’s geared toward the space and how the customer is really going to use it,” explains Nili. Each design is unique to a specific customer’s order. Having their own manufacturing facility brings new creative freedom to the process, allowing the business to be “very specific with both the design and the function of the products” for every project they complete, Nili explains.

Numerous possibilities
For many homeowners, the master bedroom is a retreat from everyday stresses. But messy and underutilized walk-in or reach-in closets can become a burden.

“Whether you’re always on the go, a homebody or find yourself somewhere in the middle, your closets are a place that you utilize multiple times a day,” the company says.

In a typical closet, explains Nili, you may have one simple bar for hanging clothes and one long shelf over top of that. “There’s a lot of wasted space; there’s a mess on the floor and above the shelf because you can only pile so high. We help utilize the full closet. We change what’s inside there and add our system, allowing you to store items from top and bottom. Sometimes you can even double what you can put in that closet,” Nili says.

Improvements such as adjustable shelving, multiple hanging elements, corner units, pull-out bins and hampers can make efficient use of space.

Trendy “gadgets and toys” are gaining popularity, like a hanging pant rack that makes it easy to choose outfits or sliding shoe racks to display that Manolo Blahnik collection. An optional pull-out, full-length mirror, spinning tie display or velvet-lined jewelry shelf transforms any walk-in closet into a fashionable dressing room. Great designs are complemented by unique finishes like Italian-inspired wood finishes, translucent panels or decorative pulls.

For Nili, that type of intelligently designed room has been a way of life.

“We’ve had these types of closets in our house ever since I was a kid; I never knew there was anything different,” he says. “So when I went to college and got that closet with just a bar and a shelf, I’m thinking, ‘What is this? I can’t fit my clothes in here!’”

What to expect
To begin the design process, clients visit one of California Closets’ two showrooms or call to schedule a free, in-home consultation to discuss design needs. After an in-home consultation, designers can create a 3-D rendering of the proposed project, so it’s easy to see how the finished project would appear. “If a customer likes what they see, they can book an install date (usually two-three weeks after the meeting). Otherwise there’s no obligation to buy,” Nili explains. Most jobs are completed in one day and can be customized for a wide range of budgets.

The brand new showroom in Mount Laurel, which celebrated its grand opening on Oct. 11, should not be missed. There, clients can view a showcase of previous works, such as home office displays, Murphy beds, entertainment centers, wine bars, pantries, sample garages and more.

“You see so many pictures in magazines and online and they look gorgeous, but when you actually see the displays, it’s a whole different world,” Nili explains, noting one recent customer who came in looking for a bedroom closet remodel, but changed her mind after viewing all that California Closets had to offer.

“She saw a mudroom display and said, ‘Wow, that looks gorgeous, I have the perfect space for that!’ You just don’t get that with a catalog.”
