Nick Mammarelli, Washington Township
Bunker Hill Middle School seventh-grader Nick Mammarelli (pictured) recently was selected as the second-place winner in the New Jersey Association of Indians in America’s Mahatma Gandhi Peace and Harmony Awards Essay Contest. The state-wide contest, open to all middle school students, had more than 700 entries. His essay was based on the Gandhi quote: “Nonviolence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man.” Mammarelli’s prize was $200.

Elyssa Greenberg and Gianna Constantine, Medford
Shawnee High School students Elyssa Greenberg and Gianna Constantine recently won an essay contest for the Returning Veterans Committee of Medford. Both students read their essays in Medford’s Freedom Park at the Oct. 16 returning veterans ceremony.

Steven Barnett, Cherry Hill
Camden Catholic High School senior Steven Barnett has been named a Commended Student in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2011 competition by taking the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). With a 4.69 GPA, Barnett, currently is ranked first in his class at Camden Catholic.

Molly Molnar, Washington Township
Washington Township High School junior Molly Molnar was recently named the first place winner in the VFW’s annual Voice of Democracy audio essay contest. Students wrote an essay prompted by the theme “Does My Generation Have a Role in America’s Future?” and submitted it in audio form. Molnar’s essay has already been submitted for consideration at the regional competition. The national winner receives a $30,000 college scholarship.

Willow Dangle, Washington Township
Bunker Hill Middle School seventh-grade student Willow Dangle will be honored at an awards ceremony on Dec. 15, 2010, by the Knights of Columbus for her first place essay in their contest, The Patriot’s Pen. Endorsed by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the nationwide competition invites middle school students to express their views on democracy. Annually, more than 115,000 students participate in the contest. This year’s theme was, “When is the right time to honor military heroes?”

Makamba Sackey, Cherry Hill
Makamba Sackey, a senior at Cherry Hill High School East, has been named a semifinalist in the 2011 National Achievement Scholarship Program, a privately financed academic competition conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Tara Donoghue and Ann He, Mount Laurel
Tara Donoghue and Ann He, fifth-graders at Fleetwood School were winners of the “Best of the Best” Journalists for the Celebrate NJ program. Tara and Ann were selected from more than 7,000 students in the statewide writing contest earlier this year.

Nathan D’Alfonso, Washington Township
Entering with his after-school chess club at Bells Elementary School, third-grader Nathan D’Alfonso captured first place and the gold medal in a chess tournament hosted in Pitman on Sat., Nov. 6. Bells fourth-grade teacher James Cho is the Chess Club’s advisor.

Stephen Desilets, Medford
Shawnee senior Stephen Desilets was named a semi-finalist in the national Merit Scholarship Program, placing him in the top 1 percent of over 35,000 high school students who entered the competition nationwide by taking the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Brendan Ruskey, Mount Laurel
Brendan Ruskey, 11, a sixth-grader at Hartford School, advanced to the state level of competition in the National Geography Bee at Rowan University.

Hyder Alikham, Cherry Hill
Kilmer Elementary School fifth-grader Hyder Alikham won an essay contest sponsored by the Cherry Hill Alliance on Alcohol & Drug Abuse for Red Ribbon Week, which focuses on character education in schools. Therrien’s poster was themed, “Stay in the Game, Play Drug Free.”

Karen Therrien, Cherry Hill
Karen Therrien, a seventh-grader at Resurrection Catholic School, won the poster contest sponsored in October by the Cherry Hill Alliance on Alcohol & Drug Abuse for Red Ribbon Week, which focuses on character education in schools. Therrien’s poster focused on the dangers of drug-use among young athletes.
