Spring into Action

by Marc Narducci

Get ready for the competition with our 2013 Spring Sports Preview.

Another spring sports season will soon be upon us and, as usual, there is no shortage of top talent or teams across South Jersey.

That’s why once again, Suburban Family magazine is previewing several schools and their spring programs to give readers a glimpse of just some of the best action they can expect this year. As usual, we are grateful to the coaches who help provide us with so much useful information.

New this year is the addition of two schools to the preview, increasing the total to 17 covered in the tri-county area. Joining newcomers Kingsway and Clearview are Bishop Eustace, Camden Catholic, Cherokee, Cherry Hill East, Cherry Hill West, Eastern, Gloucester Catholic, Haddonfield, Lenape, Moorestown, Moorestown Friends, Paul VI, Seneca, Shawnee and Washington Township.

As an example of the quality of teams produced this year, we present the girls lacrosse squad at Moorestown. Last year, the Quakers were 26-0, ranking as high as No. 2 nationally.

Gloucester Catholic’s baseball team was also in the national rankings, leaving the Rams eying a fourth consecutive state title in 2013.

An example of these athletes’ talent can be seen in our College Bound list of athletes that have made Division I or Division II college commitments—it just may be longer than you’d think.

So with top athletes, coaches and teams, the competition should again be outstanding. The spring sports athlete has to deal with the most obstacles—proms, senior trips, friends heading for the Shore. But it seems focus has never been a problem for South Jersey athletes.

It should be a banner spring and there will be plenty from the aforementioned 17 schools who will be making one headline after another.

But before we get into the preview, we’ll take a look at the leaders on the sidelines--the coaches who were top athletes themselves back in the day and truly know how to provide just the right amount of motivation and inspiration to their young athletes—in Now and Then.
