Teams of the Year

The perfect season. The unexpected comeback. The national championship. These South Jersey teams, whether academic or athletic, have had a winning year. Whether scoring on the field, in the classroom or on stage, our athletes, performers and students stand above the rest. Here’s a look back at some of our local groups’ most impressive accomplishments from the last year.

Cherokee Boy's Cross Country
So far this year, the team (pictured) has placed first in the South Jersey Shootout, the Olympic Conference American Division Championship, the Burlington County Championship and the Olympic Conference Championship. To boot, they placed third at the national Walt Disney World Invitational in Orlando, Florida.

Eastern Regional High School Performing Arts
The Eastern High School Performing Arts Department won Best Musical from the Philadelphia Cappies Awards for their production of the musical Cats. They also won six other awards, as well as the award for outstanding hair and make-up achievement at the Rising Star Awards.

Shawnee and Lenape High School Girls’ Softball
These two high school softball squads joined forces to fight cancer in the first-annual “Strike Out Breast Cancer” softball game. They raised money through various activities such as a bake sale and selling t-shirts. The game raised $3,827.63 for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation in a single afternoon, far surpassing their initial fundraising goal.

Moorestown Rowing Club
The Moorestown Rowing Club’s Boys Light Weight 4 took third place at the 2011 U.S. Rowing’s Youth National Championships on Lake Melton in Oak Ridge, Tenn., where 1,500 athletes competed for national titles in 18 boat classes.

Eighth-grade Boys Basketball, Mount Laurel
Mount Laurel’s eighth-grade AAU basketball team won the American Division at the United States Basketball Association National Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C. in July after winning all seven games they played.

Cherry Hill National History Day Team
This team, made students from Rosa International Middle School, Cherry Hill East and Cherry Hill West, participated in National History Day, a competition sponsored by The History Channel and the New Jersey Historical Commission. All 31 members advanced from the regional level and qualified to compete at a state level, only the second time in the competition’s history that an entire team has advanced.

Washington Township High School Bowling
This girls’ bowling team won the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Group IV State Championship in the spring. During their season, the girls’ aimed well, ending with a 32-0 record.

Marlton Chiefs Boys’ Basketball Team
The Marlton recreation council’s sixth-grade Chiefs “A” basketball team went 19-0 this past season, defeating the Delran Bears in the sixth-grade league championship in the boys’ division.

Mount Laurel Girls’ Basketball Team
Mount Laurel recreation’s fifth- and sixth-grade girls’ basketball team had a perfect record this year, defeating Team Peditto in the league championship. They ended the season with a 13-0 scoresheet.

Eastern High School Gifted and Talented Model United Nations Team
This team won Best Large Delegation at the Johns Hopkins Model United Nations Conference. Individually, team members won an additional 17 awards, along with placing first out of 78 competing schools.
