Chestnut Ridge Middle School Assistant Principal Sheryl Lean (pictured) welcomed Air Force Senior Master Sergeant Sebrena Flagg-Briggs as the school kicked off “Operation Inspire and Motivate” during the week of Sept. 11, to send thank you notes and stuffed animals to soldiers oversees.

Maureen Barrett
Mount Laurel
Harrington School’s Barrett was granted the Excellence in Environmental Education Award by the Alliance for New Jersey Environmental Education. The eighth-grade teacher leads the school’s environmental club, and has organized hands-on projects with her students such as beach clean ups, stream assessments at Laurel Acres Park and annual camping trips to study horseshoe crabs and shore birds.

Lisa A. Barnes
Medford
Barnes, a Medford resident and professor of communications arts and humanities, received the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Distinguished Teaching Award for her efforts establishing a college-wide reading program and other activities focusing on reading. Barnes, who lives in Medford, has taught at Delaware County Community College since January 1999.

Marietta Hanigan
Haddonfield
Teacher Marietta Hanigan, and her kindergarten class at Haddonfield Friends School, will play hosts to a service dog through the nonprofit Canine Companions for Independence program. The class learns about what it means to raise an animal to help people with disabilities.

Ann Magee
Medford
High school teacher Ann Magee won the Medford Cultural Arts Commission’s poetry contest in late August, with her work inspired by Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. Magee read her poem “Room to Hope” during the town’s 9/11 memorial services on the 10th anniversary of the attacks.

Pat Jorgensen, Pam Culin, Wendy Crawford
Washington Township
Educators Jorgensen and Culin, along with Grenloch Terrace Early Childhood Center principal Wendy Crawford, are credited with developing Washington Township School District’s new “Welcome Home” program, a specialized set of morning and afternoon classes for preschool children who have been diagnosed with autism.

Jennifer DiStefano
Cherry Hill
DiStefano, student assistance coordinator for Cherry Hill schools, was honored as the Camden County Municipal Alliance Volunteer of the Year, on Sept. 9 at the 20th Annual Summit of the Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. DiStefano was recognized for her exemplary work during the school year with students and parents to combat drug and alcohol issues.

Christopher Clarke and Shawn Ryan
Medford
These former Memorial Middle School teachers have returned to Medford as new principals in the district. Clarke will take over at Milton H. Allen School and Ryan will work at Medford Memorial. Each was chosen from a pool of more than 70 candidates through an extensive process, including input from an interview team made up of administrators, teachers, parents and board of education members.
