by Catherine DeMuro

Believe it or not, you don’t have to leave South Jersey to experience food from around the world. From Greek classics to Jamaican delicacies, there are plenty of choices to take your palate on a trip around the globe. Whether you’re embracing your heritage or trying something new, check out our picks for your next culinary adventure.

Greek
Estia Taverna, Marlton
Look no further than your backyard for an authentic taste of the Greek islands. Mediterranean dishes such as stuffed grape leaves and lamb chops are served with a focus on their extensive selection of whole charcoal-grilled fish. With vaulted ceilings and handwoven rugs as décor, the atmosphere is just as authentic as the food.

Indian
Coriander, Voorhees
Whether you’re in the mood for spicy coconut soup or smooth tandoori chicken, this popular Indian bistro presents a range of dishes that are sure to please seasoned diners and newbies alike. Traditionally, Indian cuisine is heavily vegetarian and this menu includes many vegan and gluten-free options with a separate vegetarian menu to boot.

African
A & H African and Jamaican Restaurant, Lindenwold
Indulge in authentic favorites like the curry chicken and plantains at this no-frills spot right here in South Jersey. Each plate comes complete with Jollof rice, a Jamaican and Nigerian side that is both a cultural staple and a comfort to people who grew up eating it.

German
Sebastian’s Schnitzelhaus, Wrightstown
The search for authentic German cuisine makes this trip deep into Burlington County worth the drive, thanks to platters like the essential schnitzels, perogies, bratwurst, currywurst and more.

Jamaican
Little Negril, Cherry Hill
If you close your eyes, picture some palm trees and imagine it’s 40 degrees warmer, you’ll think you’re in Jamaica dining at this authentic establishment. Serving up Jamaican favorites like jerk chicken and garlic shrimp, you can also try specialized dishes like ackee and salt fish: the national dish of Jamaica made with tropical ackee fruit.

Korean
Beawon (Stacey’s Korean BBQ), Cherry Hill
Hot pots, kimchi and seafood galore can be found at this local Korean spot. With an extensive barbecue menu and plenty of vegetarian options, Beawon keeps in tune with the traditional Korean meal of meat, rice and vegetables. Enjoy a group combination platter to try even more varied banchan, or side dishes—although you may want it all to yourself.

Pakistani
Tandoori Kabab, Voorhees
Come for the fresh-fired kebabs and stay for the chicken tikka masala. Blending a mix of Indian and Middle Eastern food, Tandoori Kabab embraces the diverse nature of Pakistani food. Don’t forget an extra side of garlic naan bread to soak up all the hearty sauce.

Portuguese
Chef Mauro Pavilion Barbecue, Riverside
Get your seafood and barbecue fix with an authentic Portuguese twist at this unassuming barbecue spot. Enjoy the chef’s home cooking with classics like the grilled top sirloin, or venture outside the norm for some pork and clams with potatoes for a true taste of Portuguese cuisine.

Salvadorian
El Salvadoreno Pupuseria & Restaurant, Clementon
You don’t have to cross any oceans for a taste of El Salvador. This casual café specializes in puposas, a traditional beloved Salvadorian dish comprised of fried dough stuffed with your choice of cheese, refried beans or vegetables. Wash down your meal with some maranon, or cashew fruit juice, for a complete Salvadorian dining experience.

Vietnamese
Bo Ne, Woodbury
Satisfy your pho craving at this local Vietnamese spot and try some authentic bánhmì—essentially the country’s flavorful equivalent of a hoagie—which is available with pork, chicken or beef. Charge up with some bold Vietnamese coffee for a boost on this broth-laden endeavor.
